Training Pre Season '23

I am going to preface this by saying I don't go to training during the off season and I don't watch the intraclubs because I don't have time. However, from what I have seen it always seems to be that the best 22 forward line plays the best 22 backline.

If the thinking is correct then I think the Cotchin 4 goals in an intraclub will be the big warning sign we never picked up on from Preseason. Based on the two practice games, the fact that Cotchin was potentially playing on our best defence and still racked up 4 majors is an ominous sign for us. After watching that lack of any urgency from all except Baker, I think we could be in for a very long year.
Who said they were trying?

There’s a big group of teams like every year who are all pretty even and fighting for those 5-8 spots, we are one of those. Personally don’t think we are top 4 material.

we were 5-8 last year. we added tarranto and hopper

anything less than top 4 is a failure

need pies umpiring

bulldogs

we've lost the frees by 10+ 25 times since 2017 when they never have LMAO

they've won it by 7+ 41 times only 4 for us :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

surely now that we have 2 extra inside mids we will win all the frees now? oppos always told us we just need to be first to the ball with inside mids and we'd win all the frees

Its still so early, our B23 midfield & Fwdline have played one game together against AFL level opposition, its obviously going to take a few games til it starts humming. I just want us to fix the things we can control, like defensive efforts right across the ground and maybe some endeavour to get to the loose ball first for a change, sadly these things have been lacking in both practice matches.

Won centre clearance by 7✔️
Dees 6 goals from D50 transition needs work

That's how I see it.

Transplanting a new midfield into the team and shuffling campaigners around to accommodate them was always going to take a bit of time to settle. We'll be right up there at the right end of the year.

Lots to like about our preseason so far.
Couldn’t care less about results in practice games.

Taranto is a genuine A grade talent.
Lynch finally fit and a lock for round 1.

I’m not worried about Riewoldt at all. He’s class and will get his 40 odd for the year at least.
Dusty looks great and ready to be back in the elite category.

Cumberland looked good to me on the weekend and should have snagged a couple early but was too keen to give the footy to teammates. He’s a finisher and needs to be told to take the shot more often than not.

Obviously a stronger mid group this year but I am a little concerned at our lack of pace or perhaps it’s more being “one paced” in the midfield at times depending on who we have rolling through the middle.
Taranto, Prestia, Hopper is not the right mix for example. Need to watch that.

We look a bit leaky defensively and need our back six to settle in and tighten up.
A strong year from Balta would help enormously. Mids Working harder in defensive transition will help. Melbourne are up and about though and made it look worse than others might have.

Miller the second ruck option for me. I would love to see Ryan get a crack but unlikely for round one. Too much risk and Miller provides another option if one Carlton’s key forwards gets off the leash.

Not sold on Cotchin forward yet but with Prestia likely to miss round one Cotch will get a chance to show his value as member of our midfield.

MRJ looks to have grown his game and I’m loving his intent to take on his immediate opponent when he takes possession. Didn’t like seeing him start off the ground with Cotchin forward on the weekend. I hope that is not how the side settles as the year rolls on.

Carlton poster on the main board preview thread reckons Walsh is better than Bolton, Kennedy is equal to Hopper and Hewett is equal to Taranto....
Yes, that's why Bolton has a premiership medal, has been an AA already and Hopper and Taranto have been part of a midfield group that has got GWS to prelims and a GF while Kennedy and Hewitt have done.......?

I agree with a few sentiments in this thread. I don’t think we’ll be playing finals, more or less battling it out for a top 8 berth.

I see our defence as a real real worry. However, no expectations this year. Just enjoying watching Martin again and Jack and Cotch’s last year.

Well make finals but I feel much like last season we will drift away. I know just a practice game but we showed the same game plan as last season no difference whatsoever. Bomb it forward eg Cumbo was on his own with 4 Melbourne players around him and guess what they kick it to him. Feel Coast North Adelaide days may not be over. Teams that will come for us, we will just crumble again.

I presume this just game plan scenario you are presenting but what's confusing me is why on earth would we go with the same plan two years in a row? and why did dimma even bother to go to states to see if could improve our current style? It seems to me you are jumping at shadows because you watched a meaningless praccy game that we lost and you think this will define our season. Why don't you give it a couple of months of real footy before you go deciding out fate for the year and stop trying to think too hard.

They will then just pin Tigers for Holding the footy more often when we win it first.

Campaigners
noticing it already v north taranto grabs a ground ball and gets ridden in the back and its holding the ball...zuhaar does the same thing and its in the back norf goal.....spargo gathers a loose ball and tries to dash off stumbles into team mate and falls over, a richmond player in hot pursuit goes down too in a momentum/chain reaction, in the back spargo goal.
