Training Pre Season '23

Thought I'd save everyone a trip to the Aged website
Triple-premiership defender Nick Vlastuin may have overcome a rib injury, but he faced as tough a pre-season challenge as possible when matched up on Dustin Martin during Richmond’s intra-club match on Monday.

Vlastuin had spent time away from contact training, having fractured a rib at training earlier this month, but he recovered quickly and his run and carry were on show in a spirited clash of more than an hour at Punt Rd where senior AFL umpires took charge.

While co-captain Dylan Grimes had bulk minutes on Martin, Vlastuin had spells on a man who has been in mint condition through the summer. Martin dispelled any fears his interest in the game – and the Tigers – had waned. There were suggestions last year Martin was considering a shift to Sydney, and linking with the Swans.

Martin finished with two goals on Monday, his first coming after a strong pack mark in front of Vlastuin, and his second from a clever snap in front of goal. He missed a set shot for a third he typically would have converted.

Vlastuin and Martin, the latter the only man to claim three Norm Smith Medals, will be central figures in the Tigers’ bid to return to premiership contention, having been beaten in the opening week of the finals last year.

The Tigers have privately been delighted with Martin this pre-season, for he has barely missed a session, and appears set to again be a consistent threat. While acknowledging that at 31 he may no longer be the dominant midfield threat he once was, the Tigers believe he can create havoc forward of centre and inside attacking 50, particularly when left one-out with his opponent.

Jack Dyer medallist Tom Lynch is on the mend from plantar fasciitis surgery in December and did not take to the field.

“He’s really building up his running and within the next few weeks. He’ll be back into training and be in good shape,” Tigers assistant coach Andrew McQualter said.

The rumour about Lynch not being ready/available for round 1 was started by a poster on here who thought they had read it in an article. It was not stated (that Lynch won’t be ready for round 1) in an article.

Lynch and club have both said he is tracking well for round 1. Pretty sure Lynch also stated the injury occurred last season (and he played on) so it’s about managing the injury.

Lynch on one leg will still kick a bag

Yes, that was me. The point my post was making was that Lynch has had a seriously interrupted preseason and that usually leads to an average season for most players. I asked the question "should we be getting worried?" I think it is a concern.

I dont know exactly what is wrong with Lynch, but our medical and strength and conditioning teams have had months to get him right for the season.
I'd be concerned if they can't get him right for round one.
During our premiership winning period our medical staff were very good at making sure the players would be 100% right to go before they came back in. Often resting them for an extra week to be sure.

Last year there were some concerning signs of players getting rushed back in.
I really hope we have a handle on this, because if anything can mess up our season, it's injuries.
Lynch will be right for Rd 1. The best thing is, he's had the surgery & is recovering from it.

In round 1 when we (as we all bloody predicted) got reamed HARD by the soft-as-butter 50m interpretations (of course they used us to make an example of), they got given two in a row at one stage.

When the second of the two was paid (I think Graham's "fault" ?) I saw Cripps celebrate the call with a big yell and fist pump, given it was basically guaranteeing a goal.

That's the Carlton mindset.
That'd explain the "no Finals for a decade" results they have had in recent times.

On the way to Apollo Bay.

Fun day for Day 1.

Boys are peckish Groupie_ .

Any take away recommendations around G Town?

Haere Ra

Boss Burger Co. are a solid feed. Their chicken burgers in particular are very good.

Wasn't it some unheard of percentage of McKay's goals were from free-kicks?
I kept stats for the 2021 season. 24% of all of Carlton's goals that year came directly from free kicks (i.e. McKay throws his arms out and gets a soft free then kicks a goal). This didn't include indirect frees (for example if a player gets a free on the wing and bombs it forward where McKay marks and then goals). The next highest team was Gold Coast at 19% and then Collingwood at 18%. Tigers were predictably in second last place with 12.6%.

For those worrying about Lynch, let's not forget he played on one leg in his first season for us, had zero preseason that year, and ended up carrying us for a good portion of the season whilst Jack had a broken wrist.

Lynchy will be fine. Even if he isn't at quite the dominant level like big parts of 2022, he'll be great, and we'll have a better midfield getting him more supply hopefully.
