He is also injury free .... that's the main thing

Zones had plenty of great games before the injury gods kept striking him down

It's all about continuity and fitness

Great footballer when fit & firing
Yes he is fit again, but back when he was fit in earlier seasons with us he used to play so much dumb football.

This was the most effective I have seen him in a string of games.

Yes in previous years he had some blinders, but he was in the main very wasteful with his disposal.

Definitely been coached to play more within himself and not to feel he has to do everything himself. He definitely used to try and do too much.
His disposal was very good when he came back in - surprising many I think.

I think the coaching team deserve kudos here and it shows that you’re never too far along in your career to improve some aspects of it.

Boyd has a shin problem currently, hence why he’s struggling to get much leap in his ruck contests at the moment.

Also why he went with the trainers at one point during one of the previous sessions.

Yes, went up the race with a trainer, came back and was testing what looked to be an ankle, but shin would be similar.

I went to a dogs training earlier this year and the main difference to me was that their kicking as a team looked elite compared to ours.

Be interesting to hear if anyone else has been to other clubs trainings and anything's stood out.
This was also mentioned a few days ago. Are we placing too much emphasis on running and not enough on kicking?

I'd like to read the coaching staff's theory on the values of one over the other, particularly as I think many Saints fans have been frustrated by our team's poor skills acrss the board for many years now.

Means nothing when Lions disposals are progressing up the field while a lot of ours are sideways/backwards kicks

We were plenty attacking this year.

Substandard on ballers and a forward line bereft of forward craft outside of Higgins is the difference between us and the lions.

2025

Defence - lose Battle and probably play a rookie - regress
Mids - Macrae with Pou and Garcia coming on - improve
Forwards - meh but at least Harvey isn't doing the forwards next year which is a plus. All of them need to stand up and do better, Higgins aside.

king?

Our disposal efficiency was the same as Brisbane’s for 2024, as was our scoring accuracy %
Biggest gap between us and the premiers last year was clearance (total)
Bris 40 a game, #1 in league
Saints 30, 2nd last after Richmond.

That’s where improvement is needed.

Hopefully Macrae, overall list health and natural progression of the younger mids sees us improved.

Forwards are fine,
Looked a lot better in the 2nd half of year when the mids started to get the ball in quicker.

Plus their clearances are Neale or McLuggage bursting out of the middle. Ours are RoMa blindly hacking the ball forward.

With injury and suspension getting most of our best forwards there should be improvement there.

We could have gotten one of the all-time great steals in Dodson.

Would he have been the best performed in the ruck in the U18’s since Jackson?

And I think he was still playing basketball for Australia this year!
Huge steal if we’re patient enough!

I did a bit of homework because bored and compared the last 3 “best ruck in drafts”-

2022 Harry Barnett pick 23
SANFL 18s- 18.1 disposals, 24 hitouts
Nationals- 11.7 disposals, 14.7 hit outs

2023 Will Green pick 16
CTL u18s- 11.3 disposals, 22.8 hitouts
Nationals- 12 disposals, 24.3 hitouts

2024 Alex Dodson pick 53
SANFL u18s- 20.8 disposals, 24.8 hitouts
Nationals- 17.3 disposals, 19.7 hitouts

In my opinion I think clubs are tending not to select ruckman very high knowing they will take 4 or 5 years to develop, with such a shortage on list spots, preferring to target trading for them at 25 or 26 years old. That and with new ruck rules the athletic leaping ruckman are going by the wayside in favour of the Xerri/Meek types.

Dodson was a huge steal after being rated 15-25, Schoenmaker was a huge steal after being rated around pick 20, and Keeler was a huge steal after being rated by many as around pick 15-25. Also with high upside draftees like Tauru. Nailing these picks could definitely supercharge our rebuild! I’m feeling optimistic for the clubs direction!
