Talk to a Hawthorn supporter now. Bottom 4 in 2023 but they beat Brisbane, Collingwood, Dogs and St.Kilda, thrashed us and West Coast. From 1-8 in the first nine weeks, they were a competitive 6-6 over the next 12. They still had bad losses - 8 by over 50 points - but they had some joyful days at the football and are looking forward more in 2024.

I've had COVID as many times as I attended a North win over the past four years. I think I'd prefer to get COVID again ahead of having to watch some of the soulless/inept performances North have dished up in those four years. Optimism for me will be starting to see the sort of team that I think we will be in four years time.

I think North can beat some good teams in 2024, play out 4 quarters better, win more games (especially in the back end of the year), minimise the stinkers (unlike Hawthorn), but probably not get to the 8 or 9 wins we'd most likely need to get out of the bottom 4.

(BTW. I also think Hawthorn will be around the bottom 4 too - their worst in 2023 was still pretty bad)

Rucks, Xerri and CCJ and let's be honest CCJ was drafted in 2017 it now is 2024 and he is yet to show anything that suggests he will be successful. Hey I'm ok with that, s**t happens. My point, it is very easy to say a Pink, Nyuon, Phillips, Powell, Stephenson, Dawson will fill voids or become the players we desperately want them to be. It unfortunately doesn't work that way, life I do mean.
But I'm super excited by Sheezel, Wardlaw, McKercher, Duursma et al.

I said finals in 2025 and I'm not as yet giving up on the flicker of hope I have. What we need this year is to show the footy world we're a-comin. That isn't necessarily related to the wins column.

Hard to disagree. Reality is that we are younger again this year.

I'd argue our team across the park is better balanced and stronger than any of the last few years, however it is also peppered with gaping question marks - notably those you mentioned in the backline and ruck.

That said:

1. Final ladder position for Nmfc - All going well 12 or even slightly higher. Cannot afford injury runs to LDU, Simpkin, Zurhaar like this year or their senior cohorts to have any chance of this though.

2. Leading goal kicker and goals - Larkey, 69

3. Syd Barker - LDU, Sheezel was a bolt of lightning but in reality we are struggling again too much if he is back to back. I reserve the right to eat a sh*t sandwich when he shows that he hasn't even scratched the surface of what he can do and won't be upset.

4. Premier - What the hell, GWS which will be a laugh.

5. Brownlow - LDU

6. Wooden Spoon - I think WC still leading to an early change of coach but they have competition.

7. Player to have a breakout year at North will be… - This is close to the toughest one to call IMO. I guess it depends on your definition somewhat which is why some players I'd already argue have and just need more time and games (ie. Wardlaw). My head says McKercher will be in by the intraclub and never look like anything other than a best 22 but my wishing hat wants someone like Xerri to find an extra 20% at the level and make list management a heap easier for next year.
