yawn we're buying the league yawn

and hopefully you're still whining for years to come. sorry for breaking the monotonous arsenal/chelsea/united/liverpool lovefest of the last 20 years. money is the only way to compete. it's not our fault we have good owners and the glazers take more than they put in. we have plans to build an incredible youth academy and to have predominantly homegrown players on our books in 10-15 years. without money nothing is possible.

liverpool have won a premier league title? ;)

A bit shattered. More disillusioned with what this league has now become. The whole league is just hell-bent on spending a whole bunch of money to get somewhere. And it was fun when it was United and Liverpool and Arsenal because they actually built their finances up themselves through their marketability and clever purchases. But since Chelsea and City have come in and used oil money to get to the top it's just not interesting anymore.

Heaven help if the rest of Europe ends up like the English Premier League.

Boo hiss. What about the rest of Europe? they have their powerhouses too.
SPL - Rangers and Celtic.
Serie A - Milan, Inter and Juve
La Liga - Real and Barca

I could go on.

haha. loving this.

what, the most entertaining league in the world? yeah, how terrible.

or maybe it could end up like serie a, with match fixing, prime ministers owning teams and god knows what else. two teams like the spl tickle your fancy? or maybe another 2 team competition like la liga with teams scrapping below due to horrible television deals and bank loans to the top 2 clubs.

yeah, heaven forbid the rest of europe ends up like the english premier league

Utter nonsense.

Without investment United and Liverpool would never have been in the position where they were profitable entitied.

United probably wouldnt exist at all if it wasnt for businessmen bailing them out on several occasions. And the move to a PLC and flotation on the stock market financed much of their purchases in the early stages of the premier league when money really came into the game.

And if you take out Liverpools successes while under the ownership of pools millionaires (who spent fortunes) they wouldnt have a tenth of the support they now have.

This constant re-writing of history comes down to one thing and one thing alone.

People are happy with the influence money has on football when they're the ones spending it. It becomes something wrong when they're not.

Not really. We spend a lot more than most and I still think the whole idea is bad. Every club has debt issues trying to compete. Is that a good thing? I can't see how it is. The fact is you have to stay in debt to compete, if you are anyone besides a handful of clubs and you just operate on operating income you're going to be bouncing around divisions losing fans, it's a no win situation. Now most of the big debt clubs are owned by wealthy people that can spare it and there lies their argument, it's going onto another issue but it just makes you scratch your head at the figures wasted on the sport when you see so many other ways it could be spent in the world.

My personal view. Salary caps have their own issues, you still get big teams staying big... because well big markets and supporter bases are always going to offer more opportunities with sponsorship and tv air time. The Lakers are a prime example of that in a salary capped league. There's no easy fix, my idea would be to have a spending limit, a capped net transfer spending limit across Europe perhaps. It would allow clubs that wanted to spend to be able to do so and allow selling teams to keep producing players for profit. Certainly at the very least teams, their owners and finances should be monitored more closely and perhaps independent bodies to approve spending so we don't end up with anymore clubs going bankrupt.

Then again. We have been one of the top 5 spenders over the last half decade or so and are going shit... so have Villa and they only just stayed out of the last day relegation shitfight.

Also to the previous post about the league. The EPL is still the greatest league in the world. No matter what the spending, teams like Wigan can still come in and knock them off. Sure the same teams end up in the top few but with plenty more excitement along the way. Really only Bundesliga comes close and no one likes Germans.

yeah that's true. imagine the legal battles of trying to suspend the biggest clubs in the world from competing in the champions league.

what i fear for in the spanish league is the television deals. ffp wont do anything about the horribly construed deals in favour of madrid/barcelona, and clubs like valencia, sevilla, and the cash filled malaga, who stood a real chance to try and crack into the top 2, will now be pushed further back

I'm a United fan and I think you're being silly.

It's not as if City have romped to a league win by 20+ points. Most likely next week they'll be lifting the cup on the back of goal difference. It's United's fault for bottling the Everton, Wigan and City games.

I can live with City spending so much money if, as it looks like they are with their youngish squad they are spending to create the platform to set up a dynasty and now slip back into the pack(financially). What we don't want is 1 or 2 clubs spending big forcing the others bankrupt or all into selling clubs, then you end up with La Liga. The start of next season at least while City & United will be favorites the possibility of Chelsea, Arsenal or even Spurs or Newcastle could come and have a dip won't be impossible.

Pretty sure most thought it was doom and gloom when Abramovich poured his money into Chelsea upon his arrival in 2003.

Have to admit I thought United dominance would be over then and this was strengthened when Chelsea won the league back to back (04-05, 05-06). But United have a way and they won the title the next 3 seasons.

They will need to find the way again and I have faith that they can. Will it happen as quickly as when Abromovich and Chelsea began to dominate, perhaps not but I expect we will be around the mark.

Forever United!

I think the thing that is most jarring to non-Man City supporters, moreso than the actual money itself, is the abruptness of Man City's rise and likely (surely they won't stuff it up now) title success. Whereas most other clubs have built their sides gradually from their own resources, Man City, (and Chelsea) through seemingly nothing but sheer dumb luck, are the "overnight sensation", a club that went from being just another mid to lower-table Premier League side one day to being on an inexorable path to glory the next. It just feels too effortless and artificial and contrary to the more conventional method of measured and steady progression until the achievement of the ultimate goal.

Having said that, good luck to you, it's not your fault that you happened to be taken over by billionaires. Money dominates the game now and while having it doesn't guarantee success, you can't be successful without it. As a Liverpool fan, I sincerely hope that you hold your nerve on Sunday. However, rightly or wrongly, you just have to accept that not everyone will view Man City's success and the way it was achieved in quite the same way that you and other Man City supporters will.

Exactly.

City were dreadful in the few years before Thaksin. There was one season where they were woeful at home and almost got relegated, save for a late surge or something, IIRC.

Whereas most other clubs have built their sides gradually from their own resources

People still ignore the fact that without external investment no side would have the resources they currently have.

Without Pools money Liverpool wouldnt have a tenth of the success they have had, nor would they have a tenth of the worldwide supporter base.

Its a harsh fact but true. And it seems to have been erased from history by those that have now decided that money in the game is bad.

United are a similar story, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton as well.

Incidentally they are the gang of five clubs that pushed for the creation of the premier league, opening the door to the likes of Abramovich/Sheikh Mansour as well as Glazer/Hicks/Gillet etc
