Right. So what's better than a written report that tells us nothing? A whole bunch of low quality, grainy videos that tells us nothing! :p

I ended up deciding to record snippets of training instead of doing a written summary as it was easier and probably more informative than potentially biased observations. There's also a 20-odd minute long mini-match of sorts which I'll post first.

Hope you enjoy and can glean whatever insights are possible and apologies the many short vids and for any wonky handling. :p

I only watched that first 20 minute mini-match, and it looked pretty grim to me. Maybe it was hot and windy and you've got the best 22 spread across both sides, but there was maybe 10 seconds to get excited about (12 minute mark) in the whole thing. Slow movement. No run from behind for handball receives. Poor skills. Everything a short chip kick after taking ages to assess options. Looks like the same old conservative JL gameplan where everyone is petrified of taking the game on in case they make a mistake.

That’s the most damning thing about JL, imo.

Tbf I’ve only watched the first two minutes but it looked to involve a pretty good run and carry through the middle brought unstuck when someone blonde didn’t pull the trigger. Whoever this is is probably not 22 assuming no one has done a full dye job that I missed

Then there is also the point that we looked pretty great last year from all reports and then started the season like we spent all summer practising American football by mistake.

Not sure it’s melt worthy yet fellas. First test against an actual team will be interesting tho.

That's one way of looking at it.

I've started researching potential number 2 picks (we're not West Coast bad).

I honoustly don't know what people were watching all slitting their wrists in here after watching the sim. It looked specifically like training in creation from deep from stoppages*, very different from play from high or midfield opposition turnovers, which contained a number of highly risky runs from behind and diagnol handball chains through the centre??

*after the fact edit. I shouldn't have said 'stoppage'. I should have said 'stop in play': Clearly it wasn't a bounce or thrown in but deep intercept marks or free kicks.

I thought the same, looked like it was play on as much as possible (no one plays on every single time). You could slit wrists over the skills, though again, they are never as good as just the best 25 players

Nobody loves ragging on Freo more than Freo fans. A preseason drill where we held on to the ball for 2 seconds? It's like Christmas

What ive observed over the years is that when two teams are playing each other in a match sims where both teams are using the same gameplan then the football is often not pretty to watch. The reason is that teams struggle to get free in open play for whatever reason. They also do drills at times that involve running down the clock or practicing slow play to protect a lead in game situations.

I do think though we should prioritise selecting players who can move the ball quickly and play on often as stagnant, slow ball movement has obviously been a major weakness under JLO. Which us why I want the likes of Wagner, Sturt and Emmett to be given every chance to cement a place in our best side. For what its worth Im prety excited to see how much muscle Sam Sturt has put on judging by the photos. Geez if he could improve significantly it would help us a heap.

To a degree it could also be the case we have more talent in our defensive half than our forward half and that could also be playing a role in some unattracive football being played. For what its worth I remember a couple of full practice matches played when Ross Lyon was coached where a handful of goals where scored across an entire match due to both teams using a defensive game plan.

While true, past evidence has shown we have a serious lack of skill amongst the playing group.

Do we? I've thought the skills have been good for a while (it's certainly not something I've watched thinking we are a long way off the last few years) but I'll asterisk that to say because we play too safe, it's hard to know if they at the level required.

I have to agree our skills has let us down at times. A fumble at the crucial time in our back half which should of been an easy clearance and results in getting scored. A simple handball missing the mark that breaks the chain going forward, a relatively simple kick into the forward line under no pressure misses the target.

Not to say other teams don't but if you watch top teams is less but is noticeable

Maybe, but off the top my head, issues with winning last year were some combination of
1) too slow / chipping it too much
2) contested ball
3) <insert scapegoat here>

I honestly don’t think general skills are something we’ve complained about on here much of late. Could add forward line delivery to the top I suppose which is skill based. Also something stats cant tell us much about because I’m pretty sure we had some of the highest disposal efficiency of any team last year which is tied to being too safe more than actual skill level.

People have complained about our skills a lot in gameday threads imo. Like literally every time we concede a goal to a poor skill error.

Thing is absolutely no one complains about it when we score a goal because of a poor skill error. Why they aren’t complaining is obvious but at the same time it is forgotten about really quickly by our fans. Skills in the AFL aren’t perfect and the opposition does make mistakes as well.

I tend to find that if a skill error is made by a player posters on here like the skill error is forgotten about rather quickly. If it’s a scapegoat player certain posters will go on about all the next week in the changes thread, no matter how good said player played in the rest of the game.

Slow ball movement and stoppages are why we lost most games we lost last year. Anyone who says otherwise wasn’t actually watching us play.

Yeah but gameday threads are their own special breed because they are treated like being there live and people just say whatever, dont think many wrap-ups (where a bit more thought is put into posts) complained about skills. Also, everything is Banfields fault, we all know this
