One of our biggest culprits for slowing the forward movement last season was Liam Henry, now he’s gone I’m keen to see if there’s any change. What will also be interesting is if he dishes up the same under Lyon, if he does i can’t see him playing too many games.

RTB values a lot of things more than aggressive forward ball movement. It will be very interesting to see how he develops under Ross.

I'm imagining RTB having a chat with Henry in his office with his laconic voice:
'Mate, we love what you bring to the club, your energy, your positivity...you've certainly got some moves, we want to see you out there Round 1, but what are we going to do about your kicking, it's really holding you back?'

Literally cant remember him missing an 'easy' kick. Attacking kicks through the corridor are always hard.
Well I memories of it.
This is bordering on philosophy territory, so...

When you say "if your team is mediocre, you don't gain much going in thinking you are a top 4 team", you're not talking about hope anymore, because you're working without modality (i.e. sense of possibility), or with a modality that rules out the possibility of possibility. This is evident in your use of the present simple tense (your team is mediocre; thinking you are a top 4 team), but also applies to the future simple ("will be").

Those who say we are going to win the flag next year are not actually hopeful, because they are declaring a certainty. Hope lies in affirming possibility: "we might make the top 4"; "we could win the flag". Beyond grammar, hope and fear lie in a recognition that no amount of preparation, planning, prior experience, historical trends, etc. can ultimately and totally determine the outcome. They lie in the fact that, no matter how likely the outcome (99.999999999999999%), it's still not guaranteed. As the cliché has it, if it did, there wouldn't be any need to play the games.

So hope is the recognition that how incredibly talented and hardworking our players are, how brilliant our coach is, how awesome our pre-season has been, or, alternatively, how sh*t they all are ... all of these things in the end are only part of what decides the outcome. Undoubtedly a massive part, but still only a part.

Hope, in other words, is that "so you're telling me there's a chance" gif.
Enjoyed the effort and the sentiment. I wouldn't place too much emphasis on my use of language - fair to say it is pretty loose at the best of times.

What makes sense to me is to look at some data around your team and compare to other teams with similar data points. Look at how they performed and that should give you a good indication of where your team might lie.

Right up until someone posts the 22nd "Fyfe is flying" and "Simpson is the steal of the draft" posts. Then let the lid off.

Fyfe is flying, best form he’s been in since JLo started in 2020.
That Simpson kid is seriously the steal of the draft, going to play from round 1 and win the rising star in a canter.

Things often look easier from the couch. Players lack the birds eye view, and are often under higher pressure then it seems. Young has one of the best kicks in the afl. It also helps you probably watch a lot more of him then players on other teams.

So can anyone please confirm
  • is it 8 am at Cockburn for match sim tomoz
  • Are the ants as bad this year and as such do I need to wear clown stilts to save my feet?

Young has definitely shanked a couple of dead set easy, no pressure kicks on the way out of the D50. A few even, though at least some of those were on his non-preferred. Acknowledging this is not incompatible with saying he has one of the best kicks in the AFL. Everyone fluffs it every now and again.

yes to the first one. I can't answer the second one as, being a civilised human being, I wear shoes when I am out and about.

I compare to the gold standard, D.Mundy.
Quoting for when he does a Hilly moment in a final and single handedly secures our next GF berth.
Not sure I'll GAF at that point.

Thankyou

What that match sim video also tells me is we’re not focusing on attacking flair or creating new avenues to goal. Just same old same old, which can be easily defended. I’m hopeful we are banking on more goals from our mids because I’m not sure where they’re all coming from otherwise.

Team bear with me for a moment. I totally understand the issue with our game style for much of last year. The chipping the ball sideways and backwards, slow play, not playing on etc was terrible to watch, but I take some solace about how our game evolved (eventually) over the year. What we want is to get the ball into the forward line fast to give the forwards a chance to go to work before all the opposition block it up and shut it down. Now if you take uncontested marks and high possessions as a marker of chipping backwards etc and forward efficiency (what % of forward entries result in a shot on goal) as a marker of fast ball movement, then the following stats are interesting. In our first game last year (which we lost) we had 122 uncontested marks to 80 for the opposition. Also we had more possessions (437 to 393), more inside 50’s (65 to 53) but less resulted in shots on goal (30% to 43%) because by the time we got the ball in there, there was 18 defenders in there as well. If you contrast that with our last game (which we won) we had less uncontested marks (101 to 103), less disposals (377 to 383), less inside 50’s (45 to 47), but most importantly many more turned into shots on goal (53% to 42%). Now I’m not suggesting we try and have less disposals or forward entries than the oppo, but I do think those stats show that our game style changed over the season and we got the ball in faster and more direct to the forwards. Hopefully this year will see a continuation of that game style evolution.

We notice Young's bad kicks more because he has the license to take those risky kicks. Someone like Banfield who plays within his skill set is not going to try one of those. It's funny how we bemoan our safe side ways kicking style but someone like Young gets derided for attempting risky attacking plays.
this
watch how Aaron Naughton kicks when it isn't a shot at goal.
every kick is a dinky pass as his teammates know he can't hit the side of a barn, generally
Brad Hill made a career out of making the short kick, & of course his amazing gut running, but his kicking is far from elite, despite what the media say about him. he simply takes the easy option & nails them. any difficult kicks are usually shanked.
Young has the ability to be one of the best kicks in the league & Chapman is not far behind in effectiveness as he is such a brilliant decision maker, taking options others don't see.

The issue I have watching a very small 20
minute sample of match sim. Intensity appeared relatively low (conditions?). We saw lots of overlap run from Collingwood and quick transition to the far side of the ground. When we tried it, we stuffed it up, or got hemmed into the wing. The system appeared broken. Either our defensive web is so sophisticated we will be a defensive juggernaut this season. Or our players don’t know how to advance the ball in a system. The latter greatly concerns me.

The stand rule other teams take advantage of, we don’t seem to be capable of.
For balance - and this is not directed just at you, but to anyone… has anyone who has watched our match sim this summer been to watch other teams as well?

I hadnt seen the twitter vid clip in here before. It's pretty awesome

What I take out of that from a wing position is:

Sharp (fat side winger) and Johnson (inside winger, rotating into the middle at times) + Chapman (inside winger, also back at times).

As the preferred setup, with O'Driscoll another ready to play option.
