AFL 2025 pre-season: The January standouts from every club on the training track

GOLD COAST

Ethan Read: The second-year ruck-forward has put on noticeable size in the summer and is impressing teammates on the track, with a chance he breaks into the side’s best forward line. Ben King and Jed Walter are currently the tall pillars, but Read’s elite endurance is impressive and gives the side a different look.

Jake Rogers: Labelled as one of the best kicks at the Suns, Rogers broke through and played nine games in 2024 and looks primed to feature heavily this season. He came into the league as an undersized midfielder but his attack on the football and his defensive pressure will mean he forces his way into a role.

Looks like there may be some truth to this. Compare the first picture below of his AFL debut against the GWS in round 4 last year to the second picture from preseason training a week or two ago. Certainly seems to be more muscle definition through the arms and shoulders when compared to last year.

Yeah every pre season we hear the same stuff. Some bloke has put on bulk and this guy is tearing it up and the belief is there blah blah blah
Then the games start and the VFL umpires do their thing or there are games where we don’t turn up at the start or throw away leads.

I’ll just concentrate on Essendon thanks very much.

Not great news on Flanders - back issue. Graham 2 hamstrings also not encouraging for season.

Monday simulation. Humphrey is killing it. Jeffrey progressed. Lombard could play in OR. Moyle playing forward. Weller battling Jepson for wing spot.

Track Watch: All the latest news and scouting notes from Gold Coast’s pre-season

Gold Coast star Sam Flanders is dealing with a back injury which has halted his pre-season after a flying start to training.
Flanders, 23, was the pre-Christmas pre-season darling after dominating the 2km time trial and imposing himself on the track.

But the breakout midfielder has battled a back issue since Christmas that has limited his training minutes and could impact his availability for the February 20 hitout against Brisbane and Collingwood – and potentially the Suns’ Opening Round clash against Essendon.

While his teammates completed match sim on Monday, Flanders was consigned to the bike and did not take part in any training drills.

Off-season recruit Daniel Rioli (knee) and second-year midfielder Will Graham (hamstring) also sat out the match sim but rejoined for the non-contact portion of training.

Rioli’s MCL rehab is progressing and the club is confident he will be ready to play Opening Round against the Bombers on March 8.

Graham suffered two hamstring setbacks through pre-season but is expected to take on a full training workload either later this week or next.

The Suns could swing a surprise move inside 50 with second-string ruck Ned Moyle deployed as a forward during Monday’s match sim.

With Jack Lukosius now at Port Adelaide the Suns are searching for the perfect partner in crime to spearhead Ben King.

The club expects second-year tall forwards Jed Walter and Ethan Read to make marked improvements on their 2024 campaigns but Moyle has thrown his hat in the ring while also battling skipper Jarrod Witts for the No.1 ruck spot.

Damien Hardwick rarely deployed two rucks last season but after Brisbane’s success with Joe Daniher spelling Oscar McInerney, it could be a blueprint the Suns coach looks to emulate more often in 2025.

After a self-described disappointing 2024 season Bailey Humphrey looks ready to release the shackles after starring in Monday’s match sim.

With each passing training session draftee Leo Lombard looks more and more likely to earn an early season debut, impressing with his tackle pressure and physicality.

Indigenous All-Star Joel Jeffrey continues to improve and looks a ready-made alternate across halfback.

Lachie Weller has trained on the wing and looks to be battling SSP recruit Ben Jepson for the start opposite Sam Clohesy.

Classic 2nd year big inside mid with the hamstrings... cue the trim down. Unfortunate but hopefully can get his body right and make an impact this year

Clohesy and Weller on the wings and Rioli and Noble off half back ................. very tasty

Weller battling v Jepson….you would assume Weller would be a walk up start over a bloke who just secured the last list spot.

No knock on Jepson, more the wording from CODE.
Put one of them on the bench and rotate the wing, rather than putting too much work load into two players especially if Jepson is impressing enough to debut.

Was waiting for some injury updates, it had been far too quiet on that front. At least Will and Sam are both great athletes, so put them on ice and if they miss the practice games then that’s fine.

Sounding more and more like Bear Season is upon us anyway, so could be a great opportunity to unleash him Round 0?

Hi Mini, hope you all don't mind the intrusion.
Last year it seemed like there were two different mind sets. Stating the obvious.
One at home where the confidence and fight, intensity and determination verses the away games where as you say sometimes simply didn't turn up with that determination.
The game at the Gabba was dissapointing and I say that honestly that there was no resemblence to the team I had been watching on TV. Everyone wants a good fight right.

Fingers crossed for a fit squad hey.
Another thing that bugged me last year was your small forwards, not enough pressure and some don't even look like scoring (Berry)
your set up will be in that area , any word on Rosas?
Cheers .

It looks like Rioli got a new injury PCL sprain now?
New teammate Rioli has missed time across the summer, including with a recent PCL sprain, but keep an eye out for Budarick as a SuperCoach option after a full summer under his belt after two knee reconstructions dulled a bright start to his season.

Budders has been the standout for me. I haven’t seen a heap of (his) footy, with his knee injuries and whatnot, but he’s had a super pre-season. I have been super impressed. He’s so clean with the ball. He makes great decisions. He’s got some tools in his kitbag that he can pull out to manipulate a game or get away from opponents. So he’s been exciting to work with and I can’t wait to play alongside Dan (Rioli). We have always had a small connection through playing against each other over the years so it will be awesome to finally play alongside each other again.”

Going by this, I don't think there has been any setback

The Suns have had a strong pre-season, with the main injury headache coming from Sam Flanders. The prolific midfielder has a back complaint and although he is running strongly, is still unable to do any contact. The club is unsure of exactly when he'll return, but is hopeful he'll be available for Opening Round. Richmond recruit Dan Rioli had surgery following an injury to his medial collateral ligament in November, and although he is still wearing the non-contact hat, is taking part in team drills and is expected to play Sydney in the AAMI Community Series. Young midfielder Will Graham is on the way back from a hamstring injury and should integrate to full training in the coming week. – Michael Whiting

Awesome. Anyone planning on going?

Would be great to get some updates on what happens during the intra club tomorrow.

Does anyone know what time? I could pop over and have a look
