Pressure on number 1 picks

We could probably argue about this until the cows come home. You say he is a midfielder, that's his role, don't over analyse it, you don't burden a genius with any instructions, you just let him play.

I say rubbish. The game is tactical. There is more going on out there than you acknowledge. Judd plays to certain team disciplines and these may change week to week, certainly he plays a freer role than Stenglein, but he still plays to a certain structure. Maybe Worsfold will recognise a certain weakness in how Carlton set up at the kick-outs, or throw ins and he may wish to exploit it. He may decide to change the role of his best player and shuffle his side around slightly. Perhaps if Judd was at a club that had less options in the midfield, then his role would stay the same each week.

Adrian Barich " John, Chris Judd, how do you go about coaching him, is it hands on or do you just say, go out there and play?"

John Worsfold " Yeah, I just let him play, he knows what to do, he knows when he has made a mistake and because he has such a good football brain, you tend just to watch rather than observe in Juddy's case, he's a really special player."

Adrian Barich " You can say that again"

You dont coach champions. You train them, that is all.

You also have to consider the entire draft when making these comments. Sure, the saints passed over Judd to get Ball, but they also picked Dal Santo. Ball and Dal Santo is a very good return from picks 2 and 13, and so the people who say that St. Kilda stuffed up are mistaken. In the end, its the entire draft that counts. Moreover, people can think that draft picks may have been a mistake, and then they can turn out to be good.

Yeah i still dont know why fools argue over this 1,2,3 pix in the 2001 draft. There isnt a bloke here that would have picked Judd at the time....with hindsight things can look soooo clear but Judd looked like he was injury prone at the time and there is very little difference in standard between Hodge, Ball and Judd anyway. Hawthorn and the Saints did the right thing by their club.

Think about it this way....Hawthorn getting Luke Hodge for Trent Croad then getting Croad back a cpl of yrs later....they effectively picked up Hodge for nothing...so who's happy ?
AND
If someone said to you right now that for pix 2 and 13 u could get Ball and Dal Santo you'd think u got the deal of the decade.

Actually Barry Hall cost us pix 13 (Dal Santo), 17 ( James Kelly) and 45 (Natan Clarke). Hall was pick 19 in the 95 draft and Carlton traded it away for Craig Davenport.

At the time there were MANY that were considering Polak in that draft. ESPECIALLY IN THE WEST coz he was a local over there. Judd could have easily been passed over for Polak by the weagles and gone further down.

Its just the luck of the draw and fate....except in the case 0f 2001 all three top pix were exceptional and exactly what u hope for from the draft.

If the weagles kicked 1 goal less in that season and had pick 1 or 2 for instance.... then Judd would be playing for either Hawthorn or the Saints....but everyone's happy anyway...and why the hell wouldnt u be.

There's definitely added pressure on a young bloke when he goes at #1.

Goddard's probably had the worst experience coz he got caught up in the Carlton fiasco....he was apparantly a huge Carlton fan as a kid and would have thought it was dreamtime when they were due to pick him up...then had the rug pulled from under him and he was on a merrygoround that was totally out of his control....not easy to cope with as a 17/18 yo.

It's certainly changed over the years. In some cases, the #1 is mainly a psychological boost for the fans giving them something to look forward to for the next year.

There's no way a club would trade away the number 1 pick like they've done in the past. No more #1 (Hodge) for Croad & McPharlin, #1 (Gardiner) for Downsborough, Lyle and Bond, #1 (Banfield) for a bunch of players to Sydney.

There's less pressure on a team now to rebuild immediately with their supporters. Many fans are knowledgable enough to know that pain in the immediate future is better than the potential of long-term pain and being stuck in the middle of the road.

Having said that though, you've still got to pick the right players. There'll be pressure in this draft to get the right pick, given there's so many talents out there. It would be different it the draft was full of one Chris Judd and 100 Clive Waterhouses.

And that wouldn't change regardless of what club he was at.

As I have always said, I'm more than happy with the the HFC choice in taking Hodge. He is an outstanding player. However Judd is better at present, however only after a few more years will we really know who is the better player.

Disagree, we know now that it's Judd imo.

#1 (Gardiner) for Downsborough, Lyle and Bond

Agree with your point, but the trade quoted wasn't actually the trade as Port didn't have pick one to use for themselves... Having agreed with your point, two pretty good KPPs in Croad and McPharlin is not a bad get (it was just unfortunate for Freo that Croad didn't work out and their No4 pick in Polak also didn't work out...).

For mine, the pressure is on the football department of the team with pick 1 more than the player. If, for example, Gumbleton, becomes the dominant CHF of the competition (like a Carey) for the next decade and Gibbs merely a good solid midfielder (like an O'Bree) then Pagan and the CFC football department will forever be labelled as bad recruiters... And yet, the decision would makes sense today.
