I considered having a crack at this but for a more detailed and accurate response can I suggest you wait for MSR or ODN?
-Awaits one-liner-

Go on, you know you want to.

Excuse my ignorance - but with all the talk about of building a boutique stadium in melbourne - what was the issue with using Princes Park?
ignorance - West Coast
There is your answer Thy!

on the topic...

AFL wanted the place shut down (hence the scheduling debarcle where we played collingwood there quite a few years back) this was in favour of establishing a majority of games being played at MCG and that stadium they now want to call Docklands who is screwing all their tenants...

in other words the AFL got it horribly wrong... west sydney in lieu of The Map anyone?

Where will games be played in Melbourne when West Sydney, Gold Coast, Fremantle and Port Adelaide play Melbourne, North Melbourne and The Bullies and they average UNDER 20000 for each of those games????

Well done AFL......where have your strategic 10 year planners been hiding???

The Carlton board don't see Princes Park as a future venue for Carlton games because of its limited capacity and our continually increasing attendance figures.

you could still play other games there!

edit: I'm sure there is a way that clubs could still profit heavily from using Princes park - even if Carlton are clipping the ticket along the way. Surely it's better that Carlton is profitable over say the MCG trust

You can extend this all the way back to Waverley!

I guess if they can play in front of 10k at Carrara or Manuka or Marrara or Canuka or on the side of a mountain somewhere, they can still play some games at Princes Park.

We won't have anybody bankrolling us to the tune of 400k per game however.

The hole in the grandstands wouldn't be an issue as these other grounds are not fully grandstanded either.

Would love to see the financials on this.

so what's the issue with Princes Park then? That a grandstand is missing?

surely it would be easier for the AFL to buy out Princes Park, or come to a financial arrangement, rather than build a new stadium

there is nothing wrong with PP... it is a personal vendetta the league has with us because no matter how much they kick and belt us we keep bouncing back to their dismay...

As for a new stadium... there wont be another stadium built in Melbourne for a VERY long time...
MCG, Etihad Stadium, The new Rectangular (being built), another roof on another tennis court at the Tennis Centre... we need a decent transport system and that will take a solid 10-15 years to finance, design and build... any government who tries to justify a new stadium is very very daring! Also $500m approx for a new stadium is out of the question for the AFL... at least until maybe the next $1 billion TV rights...

All I said was that the Carlton board don't see it as a venue for Carlton games in future.

If the AFL want to schedule games between other teams there it is for them or the relevant club to approach us, being the lessee (with City of Melbourne being the landlord) and make a proposal.

Admittedly, after the way they bullied us out of there (and into Etihad Stadium instead of the MCG), that would take some gall, but I'm sure that if that eventuated pragmatism could prevail if the $$$ was right.

To me it seems as though, from the AFL's perspective, it is now more about having alternatives and therefore leverage in negotiating with the current stadiums. The question then becomes, does developing a new stadium for the sake of leverage ultimately amount to redundancy?

Alright I get it now.
One thing I remember that was a big concern about moving to Docklands was the spectre of knee injuries. It seems that this problem does not seem to be as bad these days. I guess it comes down to the $$ and financial agreements in place at MCG and Collo sorted out at Docklands.

i think you are probably right

however - i was at subiaco the other week to watch the force play in the rugby. that was the first time i have been at subi in 10 years where it wasn't full - the atmosphere was terrible.

surely - a fixture that is going to only have 20000 people attend is going to a) have a better atmosphere and b) be more profitable at PP then at the dome.

i'm not buying into the whole anti-carlton thing - from a practical point of view - it just makes sense
