Pros and Cons of C'wood Game

I reckon there's a tendency to over-analyse pre-seasons games, purely because it's the first footy we've seen for six months.

Everyone is so hungry for information that they read too much into it.

We've always been shit pre-season. Even when we were a top four side.

And tonight, we were missing 10-12 members of our best squad.

It's good that the young guys got out there, and I don't really care about the result.

On rare occassions I agree 100% with Gunnar, this is one of them.

The main issue coming from last night is how we need to play the new game plan. Sure we had a couple of loose players back but then so did the Pies, nothing surprising here. Alot of comments about how the modern game is evolving into having loose players behind the ball.

You could see the boys trying the run through the coridor and several times we tried a deep low pass over the loose defenders to McKinnely but we didn't pull it off. We looked rushed and unsure what to do, service to Lynch and Kennedy was very average but hey, you don't develop without taking risks and playing the kids.

Collingwood showed alot more class moving the ball through the midfield, but again no surprises here. They had three players back ''on parole '' and they had plenty to pay back to their club.

don't get your hopes up, your only 1 of 2 teams to play a game so far. and since collingwood didn't play anyone new then it goes without reason that since we have seen them play that they will go up in the rankings,

If Palmer was around Masten would have no chance.

Hmmm. Pick 3, Palmer was around but Masten was given the chance ahead of Palmer.
Both will have very different seasons in 2009. My money s on Masten to poll more Brownlow votes than Palmer over the next 5 years.

The result dosen't really matter as the teams playing last night had different agenda's

Seeing how Kerr & Cox were utilised and the fact that 5 of our 7 rookies were selected in our side makes that pretty obvious. You certianly didn't see any of Reed, Dyas, Keeffe, Thoolen , Francis, Blair or Bennett playing for the Pies.

We need to fastrack midfielders so it was encouraging to see Masten, Swift & Cockie have an impact against a virtual full strenght AFL side. Kerr's display was a bonus as well

Disposal, we may have played a lot of inexperienced players but some of the displays last night weren't even WAFL standard which is a bit of a concern.

Barring injury, I think he will play every game this season. He looks ready even though his frame is light.

Big call there CK. But he really looks like he fits in at this level. Good awareness, managed a couple of times to get rid of the ball when he was in trouble, and his disposal was solid. Just looks like an AFL player, very good signs from a player in their first real game.

first game of the nab cup... i think you guys are being a bit too pessimistic. swift and cockie are real players. i thought wilkes played well on cloke, cloke got three soft goal square goals remember, wilkes ahd his measure in most of the one on ones. masten gets the ball, had dreadful skills though which was unfortunate. i reckon you guys showed a bit in the first quarter and then the youth of your side kicked in... not all doom and gloom

I think that what a few have said here needs to be reiterated, it was a pre-season match, don't try and read too much into it. Except that Swift looks the real deal and Cockie not far behind (but I must say I did question why Cockie wasn't drafted in 2007)! I read somewhere that Collingwood had played 3 intra club matches prior to this match, so they were pretty serious and played pretty well, accordingly.

And still our forward line has 20 players in it and the other end has an open forward line.

No our forward line was empty most of the night playing in the center, our forwards clogged up the center confused our Mids and backmen. Nonone was one out in the square.

They made it harder to get it down the ground through congestion.

Well, McKinley did say he was trying to talk Woosha into the "McKinley's paddock" style of game. Proved it wouldn't work I guess!!

I was mr.optimistic yesterday (apart from Wilkes) , but I still think he will play most of the season barring any injuries (he gets or is carrying). A fully fit Swift needs to be developed in the AFL and not the WAFL imo.

It was good to see them play, but I can't see how C'Wood supporters are getting all worked up about it.

Cons- Our skills coach should be fired. Our skills by foot and handball were terrible. And wtf was up with our forward line. It was full of tall timber, with NO crumbing players. With Lecras out we generally need a small forward.

Masten will kick a lot better with good leads from stronger players. Swift needs to go mid field when more confident. Once Cockie is of rookie list the young mid field will help the older guys . The forward line is not working .No one leading just bombing like freo but at least they have Pav and sometimes Mcfarlane.

oh they were trying. but stevenson, houlihan & mcginnity are not yet waters, embley and hunter. there is no point peaking on the 7th of February. keeping a few aces in terms of personnel and or gameplan is not a bad move this early on in the year
