It hasn't gone to IBAC without the Feds having a reason to believe some of the money wound up with a Victorian Government entity.

IBAC also investigates corruption by individuals employed by Victorian Government entities.

Victoria Police have been given the data by AUSTRAC. They don't appear curious as to investigate any suspicious activity related to these transactions. I guess you wouldn't expect Vicpol to look into things that might incriminate themselves.

So: Yes it looks like some money has been transferred. Nobody knows what it was transferred for. Don’t go off your collective heads just yet.

Discussing what exactly the money was transferred for, Mr Shanahan told Sky News host Andrew Bolt “there is no proof” from the details they have about “where the money went once it arrived in Australia”. “I think that if it was used in relation to Cardinal Pell’s trial, that’s actually a small part of a much larger picture,” he said.

"News . com on what;s been referred to Vic's anti corruption body:

New claims of a mystery $2 million wired from the Vatican to Australia between early 2017 and mid-2018 have emerged in the alleged corruption scandal linked to Cardinal George Pell’s trial.

The Australian has revealed Vatican prosecutors are investigating almost double the original amount of reported unauthorised transfers from the Holy See secretariat, starting with $415,000 in February 2017.

While Italian newspapers originally reported an alleged $1.1 million had been transferred as payments to affect the outcome of Cardinal Pell’s sex abuse trial, the figure could be much higher.

This allegedly occurred in the lead-up to the trial of Cardinal Pell, who was accused of molesting choir boys in Melbourne in the 1990s, was convicted, sentenced and imprisoned, but later cleared and released.

In February 2017, Victoria Police filed a brief of evidence for alleged sexual assault allegations against the Cardinal to the state Office of Public Prosecutions.

The then Vatican Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy, Cardinal Pell had already clashed with Cardinal Becciu, the influential deputy secretariat of state at the Holy See.

Considered his arch rival, Cardinal Becciu, who resigned last month from the Vatican and renounced his rights as a cardinal, has strongly denied any interference with Cardinal Pell’s trial.

It is alleged a second payment from the Vatican secretariat came in May 2017, a month before Victoria Police announced the charges against Cardinal Pell, who declared his innocence at a press conference in Rome.
In July 2017, Cardinal Pell returned to Australia to defend himself and in March 2018 was committed to stand trial – which commenced in August of that yea

Third and fourth payments totalling $1.3 million from the Vatican secretariat were allegedly wired to Australia in December 2017 and June 2018, The Australian reports. "

Thats sure how the Italian press see it, that is the corruption issue more generally & heads are rolling. These transfers (4 so far) have been exposed in these corruption investigarions, not in the ordinary course of business.

Think Greg Sheridan would dispute that.

The internal politico-theological arguments at the Catholic Boys' Daily would make the Vatican look like a gentleman's club.

The siren call of the mighty dollar reaches all ears. Just Pell went looking, others just did not want to know.

Australian police are investigating allegations a large amount of money was transferred to Australia by a Vatican rival of Cardinal George Pell in an apparent bid to help convict him of child sex abuse.
An Italian newspaper earlier reported that 700,000 euros (US$830,000) was transferred to Australia to secure witnesses against Pell in his criminal trial.
Italian broadsheet Corriere della Sera reported this month that Pell's Vatican rival Giovanni Angelo Becciu was allegedly behind a plot to smear the Australian cardinal.

Hey Fred, blaming Murdoch here is as useful as blaming him for the vote in NQ at the last election. Only the faithful (Firenze) believe you.

Hey Kwilts, all I can say is that only a truly deluded Murdoch swamp dweller could construe my post as somehow blaming Murdoch for anything.
If anything, I think he's to be lauded for giving a job to poor unfortunates like the raving lunatics Sheridan and Shanahan.

So they are only saying "the figure could be much higher". They're not saying "and it could have been for any number of reasons".

You're a journalist and you didn't spot this trick?

In suggesting the boys should have just moved away from Pell, I thought our Jane had accepted his guilt.

All that means is the money didn’t get distributed directly to government employees.
IBAC reviewed the information sent to them which relates to allegations of funds being transferred to Pell supporters from the Vatican and found there was insufficient force to warrant taking the matter further. They did what they were asked to do. Storm in a teacup as things stand.

Did you bother to read the carefully worded statement from IBAC?
