PSD - Luke Ball

So basically, these are the following possibilities:

1) Ball decides to re-sign with St Kilda, on revised terms to the one proposed last week.
2) Ball agrees to Melbournes terms and we take him at pick one in the Pre Season Draft.
3) Ball takes a massive punt by entering the National Draft hoping to end up at Collingwood.

Probability:

1) Unlikely. Ball clearly wants out of St Kilda, and the Saints have withdrawn their initial contract offer. While it is possible that they will offer him a reduced contract, it would be a slap in the face to accept it.

2) Likely. Ball will get a very good financial offer from Melbourne, and has the opportunity to become a leader of a promising young team, while also ensuring that he gets more game time than at St Kilda.

3) Very unlikely. Collingwoods first pick is at #30, so it would be quite difficult to get there. As far as I know, no player has ever nominated for the National Draft with just one club in mind. The only ones that have done it have been players who are just happy to go anywhere.

He doesn't want to play with you guys
He doesn't want to play for us as much as he wanted to play for you, but now it seems he has one choice - mend the bridge with Ross Lyon or come play for us. I'd still fancy him to stick with his team mates and work it out and try to win a flag, but if you can't get along with a coach (who benched you for the best part of a half in a grand final when you were playing good footy) then you may as well leave.

I don't want him at all.

Good average player but we'll draft two mids at 1&2 (Scully and Trengove/Martin) and we'll be paying Ball a heap of cash.

Jesse Smith for the PSD please.

I think you're a little biased there. Ryan O'Keefe managed to work it out with the swans, I still think the most likely option is he works it out with the Saints. Or signs a deal and then aims to leave in 12 months, with GC coming in player movement should only increase.

I think the O'Keefe situation is a bit different, he just wanted to go home for family reasons, he wasn't disgruntled with Sydney.

Luke Ball isn't happy at St Kilda.

Significant difference between the O'Feefe situation and the ball situation.

O'Keefe wanted to come home. It was nothing to do with the coach. He was and still is one of Sydneys best players and a walk up start to get selected upon returning.

Ball On the other hand left because he was simply not playing football and is no certainty to get a game next year.

I think with a good pre-season and if he got his body right would be a walk up start for the saints. It is clear though that Lyon lacks faith in him though and that must be playing on his mind.

People say why would he wan't to play for us when we are likely to be bottom 4. Surely better than spending a year in the VFL.

Jesse Smith is stuffed DM.

For the kid's sake, he should go to a club with the medical set-up to help him recover.

I'd definately love to see him in a Melbourne jumper next year.

But who was the last 'high profile' name that we recruited?

Not going to get my hopes up too quickly.

Ball clearly wants out of St Kilda. Who else would request to leave the club that will be premiership favourites next year, a club in which he has been captain and Best & Fairest of, a club in which he has seen go from bottom to top? He is obviously very disgruntled, and was allegedly willing to go to Collingwood for less money on the promise of more game time. Not only that, but it's been quite a big slap in the face by Ross Lyon and the club to not get the trade Ball wanted, and then withdraw the contract.

I would be very surprised if all this wasn't accurate.

After Ross Lyon's comments, there's no way Ball will be going back to the Saints.

If we've got any balls, which I doubt, we should let Ball know that if he puts himself into the ND, we'll pick him up at pick 18. For the benefit of the club, and to enhance Ball's chances of playing in a successful team, he should nominate for the PSD, and we can utilise pick 18 on another player.

he definitely wanted to stay in melbourne. i dont think he would consider the national draft when clubs like freo have the money and would be interested.
imho, he will either stay a saint or go to the PSD.
staying a saint seems to be becoming less likely, so hopefully there's no other plan with another club where he puts a massive price on his head.
in saying that, i dont think that would work, because 2 of the top 5 picks are interstate clubs, and the others are the kangaroos and tigers who surely cant have much more of an appeal than us.

If Ball goes to the PSD I realise he can set a price but how do they determine the length of the contract. What if 1 club is willing to have him for hypothetically just 1 year and another club for say 2 or 3 years?

I posted this on another thread and suggested the following;

We draft Ball on a 3 year contract with an 'in principal' agreement to trade him to Collingwood for their second round pick (or whatever) next year.

Ball gets: game time next year, a big salary, and ends up at his club of choice.
Collingwood gets: their player for the second round pick that was refused by St Kilda
Melbourne gets: a year of leadership and physical presesnce in the centre, and an early second round draft pick in the 'locked out' draft for essentially nothing

Either that or just tell Ball that if he goes into the preseason draft we will definately take him at pick 18 (even if its a lie). That way e risks going past 17 picks before landing at Melbourne anyway - and definately wont make it to Collingwood.

I reckon we're gonna get him.

Would have Ball at our club in a red & blue heartbeat, replacement for Brock and would compliment Moloney, Bell, Buckley, Davey,Grimes etc in the guts. Give him a 3 year deal, a leadership role and obviously more game time. But if our club talks of vice captaincy I will be shattered. Davey should be our next captain!
