This argument getting trotted out again is pointless.
This is a bit of a social league with a competitive edge. The standard within this league has varied significantly every year, both as a whole and within the teams. Even to the point where within one season, a team can vary in quality by 10 to 15 goals.
The only real constant has been Jimboomba. They have had a solid playing group for years with a good core, they are always hard at it and put their heads over the footy and are reasonably consistent. They have won a couple of flags, played in at least 2 or 3 losing GF's and always play finals.
If anything, the side they had this year was one of the strongest I've seen from them - yet being bailed out early and finishing 4th is as low as they have finished. The links from QAFL Fan earlier are misleading. We may have lost to Pine Rivers by 2 points that year, but we played them 2 more times for 15 goal hidings. Having said that, our 2009, 2010 and 2014 teams would give our 2011,12,13 sides hidings too!
Some years we have had a strong top 10-15 and the made up of guys who have never played before, other years we have had a solid 22 and others we have only had 5-10 regulars then begged borrowed and stolen to field 22 players. This year, the guys who finished 2nd in our 2013 B&F wasn't selected for the Semi Final, despite being available and we also had 4-5 other first choice players unavailable, so that probably gives insight into the change in standrd from year to year, just for one club.
I think our best 22 would beat most mobs in QAFA A, but its irrelevant because our best 22 may never even make it on the field, certainly not regularly.
Reminds me of 2008 when we were the Magpies 3rds in a 9 team comp. We finished 5th and missed finals. We played 8 games vs the Top 4 for 5 wins, 2 draws and a 1 point loss - and played the teams from 6th to 9th 8 times for 2 wins and 6 losses.... week to week consistency is not a strong point, mainly due to availability of personnel
I look at Sandgate this year and I love watching them play because they remind me of us! Bunch of blokes who just want a kick and some weeks they might have a great 22, others they will rock up with 17 blokes and a dog. Thats exactly how we have always been, and could be again.
Rocking up to a qualifying final with 20 guys and someone's grandpa is just classic stuff. Same as us in our 1 final last year...
