QAFL 2024 season

Maybe AFLQ have memories of this (probably not) and dont want to destroy the Vultures completely?

one of the common issues at AFLQ is the fact that they never learn from their mistakes, because its different staff making the same ones the previous staff made.

For a national body, I reckon their handover process for key operational staff is probably non existent and everyone comes from a standing start. But the time they are any good, they are burnt out and move on.

pretty sure the last few QAFL comp managers are now CEO's of other sports...

I was bored at work the other day and ran a few stats for the QAFL since 2014 when it

Mt Gravatt played finals 6 times out of 11 since the restructure after 2013. They deserve a chance to get it together but agree with those that have noted that their announced recruits are somewhat embarrassing to be putting out there.

Where to draw the line is always a challenge but at Broady we tend to try to only announce reasonably well credentialed recruits and regular senior returning players.

Honestly think 0-18 is a real possibility again and honestly they should drop back in that circumstance
Absoluely agree here ,,, not a win last season in all 3 grades with the seniors avg loosing margin like well over 120 points a game.
Time to drop down a division or 2 and put in long term plans to rebuild from there

they had 3 wins last year, 1 in the Ressies and 2 in the Colts.

Outside the COVID years (Noosa winless in 2021 in both Seniors and Ressies), the worst 2 seasons on record would be Sherwood 2023, where they still recorded 16 wins across the 3 grades and 2018 Grange with 19 wins across 3 grades, which remarkably included a Colts Premiership and Grange 2019 with 18 wins across 3 grades and Colts finished 2nd.

No other current club has fallen below 20 wins.

It's a huge dip down to only 3, and prospect in 2025 of it being zero across the 3 grades if they even field a Colts team at all.

Didn’t zillmere go broke when the deal with Kedron wavel fell through?
Shaw Sports, the sports club with the pokies went broke. The football department and club did not. But AFLQ made all clubs reapply for their license, and Zillmeres was not reissued. A strategic review of football deemed that Aspley was a better fit on the north side of Brisbane, and a license was issued to them. Zillmere as a football club continued on with about 5 junior teams, but all senior players went to Aspley or elsewhere to play QAFL. If you kick the Vultures out of the QAFL without consultation, similar would happen. If the Vultures elect to go down with their players support - then maybe you are a chance of making it.

The recently appointed Sherwood Football Director has just been announced as Assistant Coach at Jindalee.

Great pickup for Jindalee here, is he doing both roles?

I think the Mt Gravatt scenario is a bit different due to the number of neighbouring teams. They have Redlands, Coorparoo, Morningside, Sherwood that are competing for same players, not sure Zillmere had that amount of pressure back in day. Plus Zillmere had control of their Clubhouse for revenue.

I feel not having the financial revenue stream of controlling your own facilities is massive for MtGravatt. They just can’t sustain any sort of competitiveness unless they have a consistent revenue each year.

The first question being asked by AFLQ should be are they spending anywhere near the salary cap. If not that is immediate red flag they can’t raise money to be in competition therefore will never compete.

I think the only reason they are still floating is the influence of Bill Renner being on committee and AFLQ believing he can turn it around or is feeding them the information they are comfortable with.

But you’re ok with floggings in other comps?

2 seasons ago they won 4 more games than Sherwood and 1 less than Noosa.

Short memories in here.

Surely after 30 years in state league they deserve a shot to climb off the bottom.
That’s a silly comment. The most high profile comp in your state needs to be competitive. If F Grade amateurs in the VAFA was split massively I’m sure the powers would not give a stuff but if their A grade comp was there would be. Fortunately there is a relegation/ promotion system in that comp though. Just commonsense imo.

Every other comp underneath the top one and esp as you move into Div 3/4 (which is where I would advocate demographics over competitiveness) is for social reasons and a good way of getting blokes running around playing sport. Versus doing nothing.

2 seasons ago there wasn’t teams crawling over themselves to play in the comp and it wasn’t moving to a bloody 20 team comp or whatever the aflq believe is an appropriate number.

It’s a bad look in any comp. It’s a bad look on the receiving end in any comp and inevitably people are people and vote with their feet. But clubs do deserve a chance to right the ship. Herein lays the problem. When a hard or strategic decision is to be made AFLQ wrong their hands and say they’re powerless and clubs have rights. But on small things they get their clubs out and go whack. Imagine if we had some real leadership and a strategic plan and everyone knew the direction and their roles in it all.

I don’t see any other club putting their hand up to go qafl any time soon so the 20 club comment is a bit hysterical don’t you think?

If you only had 5 junior teams, perhaps that points to why Aspley was a more appropriate State League Licensee?

Thats the issue with the Vultures, while their Seniors have hit the skids, their juniors were spiralling before that.

Look at the likes of Grange, Sherwood and even Sandgate before them - all have had some rough years, but their juniors never really fell away.

Moreton Bay the only one that I can think of, but from time to time you do hear various D2 clubs espousing that as some sort of fantasy goal.

though strategically it would make sense to have a team in Logan area (Pirates out of the mirvac site might have been a good bet)

Griffiths, Clare, Blood & Brent probably the only legit senior blokes they had. Sorry, don't know who Hurst is - but wou;ldn't think they could affoird to lose any of those 4, or the next best 5 or 6.
Griffiths played for Kyabram in Vic this yr. Only played a handful of games for MTG. Has signed for East Keilor (2025). FIFO again

The way that Zillmere was removed from the QAFL, by not issuing a new license and giving it to Aspley basically killed the club. Once the seniors went, then a lot of juniors leave as well to go to "a QAFL club". Maybe AFLQ have memories of this (probably not) and dont want to destroy the Vultures completely?
2008 Northside QAFL club licence - 3 applicants, Zillmere current holder ( finished one win from finals, runners up in 2006 after winning 15 in a row), Aspley (>200 poker machines} and Grange. Gee I wonder who got he licence !

Moreton bay definitely looking to be part of in 2026 or 2027. And considering the loose criteria it stands to reason anyone could potentially get in.

It may be a bad look in any comp but more so in your #1 comp. Other comps bit harder to manage. Not hard in your premier division imo. No club is entitled to be there. Perform or move on imo and that doesn’t mean play finals just literally be competitive.
