That’s actually interesting, I’m wondering if this idea could mean EX AFL players that have had concussions (large % of them I’d imagine) will opt out of local footy to protect a potential future payout?
Makes sense to do so you would think. Otherwise how could anyone rightfully claim that the AFL were the predominant cause of any CTE they could suffer going fwd?

Dan Annable is the only one training with the senior list to my knowledge.

The suns have Uwland, Addinsall, Patterson, Murray, White, Collins, Hudson and Coulson training with their senior list as a comparison.

Not sure which method is best given the Lions going ok at the minute...!

I was asking if any of last years draft crop, who went u drafted, are training with us.

none of the undrafted players are training with the AFL squad to my knowledge.

Greenaway, Gilder, Pope, McFayden, Macaulay, Gillet, Ellis are all overagers that were invited back to academy. Not sure how many actually taking up the offer though.

We know Gillet is off to SA.

No slight on the other kids, but I’d rather not see many/any over agers with the academy.

Rather see them continue with the VFL squad or play QAFL.

There should be enough talent in the academy not to need over agers as top ups.

they can only play the northern academy series games now, I don't believe they are allowed to play the CTL games anymore without special dispensation that won't be given out as easily as it once was.

you'd have to wonder why kids like Pope and Ellis are invited back at 19 year olds anyway, very strange. Pope is handy, but not like he is any sort of prospect, and in his top age year I'm unsure if Ellis was even picked? He's a long way off it.

The others are all either pretty close to thereabouts, or were injured in their top age year - so they make a little more sense.

I simply cannot understand why any 19 year old would be coming back to play this years 18 year olds. Have a cut off and that’s that. Then as Briztoon states those guys who missed the draft can train/play with the VFL if the AFL club still is keen.

Where does Southport stand in all this?

Pretty sure the u18 NAB cup teams in Melbourne usually have a VFL team they are aligned with somewhat. Which allows for those top ages to that didn’t get drafted a chance to at least train with a VFL club over the summer.

Some would go on to train and play with those VFL clubs and others might get drafted later on. Others of course just go back to their junior/senior club. But at least it allows them to try at the next level. But the issue with the QLD academies is that a lot of these 18 year olds aren’t up to senior QAFL standard. Don’t get me wrong there are some genuine 18 year old guns running around in the senior QAFL.

they have a squad of ~60

In this years squad, maybe 10-15 of them are QAFL Senior capable in the Lions squad, and thats best case.

35-40 work their way back to club football at the end of March, some won't even get a game in the Colts at their respective clubs, none of them will play Senior footy by my estimation.

then when the Academy stuff is over for the selected players, the ones that miss out on the Allies - they all go back to club footy around Round 8? Maybe 10-15 out of 27 will be playing 1s at their club at best, the rest probably play 2s or Colts. Many just expect to play 1s, and thats where problems can start for the kids and the clubs.

8-10 hours of contact training per week with the academy from November to March, and more than 50% of that time is spent doing S&C. What a complete waste of time!

The Academies are fantastic for QLD footy. Just some tweaks with graduating player expectations in the categories below the top quartile that Miller has described

The Suns academy is doing great……the Lions academy is a fair way off.
I keep hearing this however the Brisbane Lions Men’s and Women’s programs have forever been much more successful than the Suns!
Woukd also love to know the percentage of academy kids that don’t get drafted who never play footy again?

Noah Cumberland is staying in Melbourne which is disappointing for Maroochydore

Yeah I’m surprised he hasn’t been picked up or rookie listed by another AFL club.Or even gone to the SANFL or WAFL where it’s obviously more professional.I know my former club Sorrento(MPNFL) are having a crack at him through his Richmond connection with Tom Lynch! He is the perfect age and fitness level for a metro or country club to build a successful era around!

Disappointing for Roos. Not sure why Noah signed with Roos in first place then having the change of heart. Was always a bit silly coming bk at his age from melb. He could play 2nd tier footy or very good community footy for next 10 years if he wanted to earning reasonable $$ plus fiance from MELB. Prob got caught up in the prodigal son story but think he’s made the right decision now.

So 13 teams. Everyone plays each other once. Then how do they decide who plays who twice. Is it top 4-6 play each other again and same with middle and bottom teams? A top 8 will make things very interesting in the second half of the season
