Contested marks are the least damaging thing in modern footy. Most overrated thing going around
I think picking a player purely for their contested marking ability, or structuring your side around it can be flawed like you say - lots of games are won without contested marking superiority - but that doesn't mean that in this particular game we're not at risk of losing in this fashion.

A big reason Carlton beat us was Curnow's ability to win 1on1 marking contests against May. I know none of Collingwood's players are Curnow level, but they're capable on their day.

If it is wet and becomes a slog there's every chance that this is a low scoring game. In a game where most chances are half chances, having a few set shots from <30m out might make all the difference.

Lots of teams have gone in with a contested marking strategy and lost (that early season Dogs game, Pies in the past even) and I hope that happens tonight as well, I just see it as a risk for us if we can't get our back 6 in sync and that's tended to happen when Tomlinson hasn't played.

Oh, and whilst I know your "most overrated" comment is a bit of hyperbole to make the point, your avatar wouldn't exist without an extremely damaging contested mark. ;)

Curnow had 2 contested marks against us in the game we lost. If that's the difference maker then blow me down. Kicking it to advantage is 10x more effective than contested marks

Please give Laurie the sub. He was actually really effective when he came on against the Swans.
Laurie’s best VFL performance was probably the one against Geelong last year in wet conditions. If it’s going to be wet tonight it would be a logical choice to have him as sub.

When all’s said and done (and as Neale Daniher always says a hell of a lot more is said than done) they don’t have a player like this guy. Our #11.

No-one does.

If Max produces his best tonight the Pies will not be able to cope with it. On song, he’s the best player in this competition bar none. Toby Greene, Charlie Curnow, Nick Daicos - you can have ‘em all. I’m taking this bloke.

Has he still got big rounds left in the chamber? That’s the only query.

strangely unemotional about this game, seems like a real coin toss, Dees by 7 pts.
Let me know how you're feeling at 7:21 pm

Question for the MCC people - what is a good time to start lining up for a walk in ticket?

We're the number 1 team in the league for kick out efficiency - This is largely based on the strategy of kicking it to Gawn so often.

Gawn is ranked 3rd in the league for average contested marks by players playing more than 4 games this year. Pretty handy.

We're also the 2nd best team in the league for opponent contested marks - pretty good sign of our defensive system and intercept ability.

To think it's a meaningless stat is laughable.

Not an MCC member, but I imagine there's a fair few people already in line now.

In 2018 I got there around 3ish. Line was already fairly long at that point but still managed to get a seat on level 1 about the edge of the centre square.

Couldn't find it again, but saw a photo of people already lined up at the MCC entrance on socials. Would definitely advise getting there ASAP.

Bring on the crazy Goody decision of Grundy as sub. Looking forward to him coming on and taking 3 huge contested marks up forward and winning us the game*.

*This will not actually happen, Pies by 15

Dermott Brereton tipping against us of course. Has always disliked us. Reckons Pies side stronger than KBday and our forward line not good enough.

Still livid that this is on a Thursday, purely because it meant that I wasn't able to fly down (which is clearly the most important scheduling issue).

Enjoy, friends 🤗
