I was due to go into the ballot for Vietnam Conscription , but Whitlam won and that was the end of conscription and our participation in Vietnam .
My old man was exempted due to being policeman. Apparently essential services didn’t face conscription.

If I remember correctly not every one went into the ballot. It depended on which dates were picket out .
He would also have been in his 30’s by the time you were up.

Did anyone's parents/grandparents on here ever serve in the armed forces during WW1, WW2 or Vietnam?
One of my grandfathers is a cheese-eating surrender monkey who served in the navy in WW2. My maternal grandmother served with the Red Cross, I don't know where she was from originally, but she never saw the end of the war. She received some kind of medal for her work but I'm not sure what it was, it was lost before I came along. My family don't have any artefacts from that generation actually, only one photo of my grandfather, none of my grandmother. I have no idea what she looks like.

I had to look up what that meant.

Fascinating stories guys.

I never met any of my grandparents. I am about to become a grandfather for the first time ... beyond excited!!

Here's the thing ...

I pretty much don't buy imported fruit and vegies. USA oranges ... no. Mexican asparagus ... no thanks.

I did/do make one exception though. Kiwifruit imported from New Zealand. It somehow seems ok.

Fun fact. Kiwifruit used to be called Chinese gooseberries.
I buy all fruit and veg from the market so none of it is imported other than the occasional odd stuff like you need to get a pomegranate out of season. Kiwi fruit are grown in Australia so you can even cut NZ out of your dealings, Northcote

I swear I’m going to have to stop watching ABC News Breakfast while eating peanut butter. Nothing wrong with the news broadcast but I can’t handle each break where I have to listen to whichever version of that “we are one …. but we are meh-neeeeee!” song. It is actually driving me mad

My grandfather did 2 or 3 years in Papa New Guinea on the Kokoda trail.

I've got his 5 war medals, was the only grandson with the same surname (and oldest) so he wanted me to have them. He very rarily (almost never) spoke about the war to my dad or me. Can't remember exactly but I think the 4 brothers went, 2 died, he lived and his other brother lost a leg in a POW camp or something like that.

I've got a couple of pics from him taken in Papa New Guinea but that's it

He was deeply religious, I always figured it was to do with what happened during the war and he obviously believed religion bought him comfort. Or he believed religion helped him survive.

Pretty sure he got a heap of land up past Ballarat for his army service. Either that or he bought two massive farms on the back of his pay, I think the first one.

He refused to every walk in an Anzac day parade. He didn't seem overly proud of being in war service. Probably saw a lot of ****ed up shit, hell probably did a lot himself. Finally marched in a parade just a couple of years before he died as a once off because of the family pressuring him.

My Nana was a nurse in WW2 as well but I can't remember where she was based.

Come to think of it I'm almost certain my pa was 16 or 17 and faked his age to go to war too. Kinda ****ed now you think about it

I think it's a country thing where there seems to be war memorials will all of the dead soldiers on them.

My mums big on history and bloodlines ext, I'm not

As a kid she would point out that that was your dads uncle, pas brother and cousins ext. So quite a few served in those wars

Hey everybody. Sorry if I don't respond for the next five minutes or so - I'll be eating porridge.

Thanks.
Berries in there? Gotta get blueberries and some of the red guys in there. ‘nananas are good too.

Personally I’ve cut breakfast out of my diet. I think it’s a scam. Not saying it’s bad for you but this “most important meal of the day” stuff… propoganda, it has to be.

Dinner is the big one i think.

Visited the Australian War Memorial in Borneo a few years back. Bloody hell the Japs were rough on POWs

I only know of a couple of family members who served. One died during WWI in Gallipoli and the other had his plane shot down in France during WWII.

I've been reading a great book about WWI called Hell's Bells and Madamoiselles. It's the memoirs of an AIF soldier Joe Maxwell from Gallipoli to the Western Front. It's very honest and describes his experience warts and all and gives you an insight into the mindsets and culture at the time. But his prose is like hearing stories from your mate at the pub.

Yeah the stories of the Japs putting soldiers in bamboo cages and throwing them to the tigers sharks are horrifict

Tbf the insinuation is that when the Australians had Japanese prisioners they never made it back alive either, so I'm sure it wasn't much better the other way around

2 of my great-grandfather a served on different sides of WWI. On my dad's sideone served in an artillery corps. Had a look at his war records a few years ago, had a bunch of illnesses so was away from the front quite a bit in 1916-17.
On my mum's side I've got a German great grandfather who (we think) served for them in WWI. The records are harder to find and we don't know enough German to know for sure. He was interned for WWII in Tatura. Have read some of the records about him and why he was interned, campaigners thought he was a spy but he was some random who didn't get back on his ship in Adelaide in the 20's.

Yeah pretty much every front had horrible war crimes take place.

Yeah, just the victors crimes get brushed over a bit more I guess

The bombing of Dresden by the Allies in WW2 is one of the best examples. Fire bombing the city and killing 25-30k people in the city center because of the cities untouched rail network and transport links despite the fact that none of those targets were close to the city center and were all left untouched

"War Crimes" seems like a bit of an oxymoron to me. Sure there's no reason to bomb civilians but at the same time, you want to exterminate the majority of the planet, there's gonna be a little pushback hey.

Yeah I see what you mean especially when you look at WWII. The Nazi's didn't just want to get rid of the Jewish population. They saw Slavs the same way so when the tide turned on the eastern front it's unsurprising the Soviets were keen to start curb stomping the Germans. But you still can't use that as an excuse for the murder, torture and rape that they committed on civillians on their march to Berlin.

Ive got a mate who says Hitler was only getting revenge for Jesus.
He uses Josh Frydenberg as his case in point that he was on the right path. :tearsofjoy:

Religion causes some incredible opinions.

Dinner has the best range of eating options so I like to store some energy credits and use them when it counts. Breakfast food is uncool. Though I have been known to eat left-over Thai green curry for breakfast which was strangely enlightening
