Yeah yeah nah nah guys, without derailing someone else's portfolio even further than they already are being at this point.

While ripping off someone else's concept is a bit ****en shit,

@cargo plane, you've literally invited this in a post from your own portfolio. And before you go 'oh, but they've even copied my layouts and shit' well yeah that's how it's always been, the newer/ less good designers have always copied the guys that make the best shit on this board, hell every template I whipped up was partially/ completely traced from someone else's before fixing it to be more my own. It's just more noticeable now that everyone is trying to some cool presentation shit for all their posts, you're the benchmark champ, of course everyone will be copying you.

So let's go back to your WAFL portfolio.

I put more time and effort into this than I have any of my assignments this semester, I hope it makes more sense than any of them did.

It is not the fact that people are creating another portfolio that is similar to FT's, it is that they are directly copying and pasting the introduction of the portfolio and just changing the teams and logo (and even then the logos are basically just other state versions of what FT did). There is no issue with other state leagues but the laziness in not even being able to come up with an original opening post or even a logo concept that is original is where the problem is.

It is not that hard to create a portfolio that takes inspiration from others, but is still original and unique. None of the ones that have followed FT's have been original or unique, or even inspired by, they have just been straight plagiarism.

I don't think "that's how its' always been" is really a good enough excuse to copy my entire portfolio from OP through to presentation. Regardless of if I'm a benchmark or not, that's supposed to be a benchmark of quality. Take bits and pieces as you need, that doesn't really bother me, but like, don't just decide to sequel my own portfolio without my permission. Do your own SANFL 19, VFL 19, NEAFL 19, NZAFL 19, whatever, but at least do something original with it rather than just copying everything I've done. I've invited people to make their own portfolio, not once did I say "make your own version of my portfolio using exactly what I've done to match your own league".

Even if I had no intentions of continuing on with it as a series, it's still "a bit of wank" to copy what I've done without even contacting me first about it. But yes, there will be at least a SANFL one because El_Scorcho and I plan on doing one as a bit of a collaboration. Which, inevitably will lead to a VFL one down the line but I didn't want to commit to anything after what happened with AFL '29 which was an absolute bitch to finish as I had no desire to do so.

As for the comps, it probably is a bit of wank. It started off small and I've just added them over time, but I trust your judgement and you're right it is a bit of wank so consider it deleted. If someone else had the same, I'd think it's a bit wanky. Fair pot.

I'm not sure how anyone can argue these copycat folios are ok tbh. I mean, they have literally been word for word copies. Perhaps in hindsight Freight Train may wish he worded that part of his WAFL portfolio a little bit differently, but I would have thought it would be fairly obvious "take the concept on for something similar" means put your own spin on it, not make a direct sequel. Barrybran summed it up best I think, and its something everybody should really take on board:

I'm a little late to the party however Silva Comet and Grandsun, have a look at the differences between FT's WAFL portfolio and Craegus' NRL portfolio. Similar premises however they're clearly presented differently. This is where FT is coming from with his posts here and other knock-off portfolios. FT doens't own the concept of a state league portfolio but every poster has copied his style which is a big no-no in the design world.

I did check out the sticky threads and I was surprised that there was no mention about plagiarism. Obviously no idea is completely original anymore but I would have thought that rule #1 was to not rip someone else's work off.

All in jest of the situation but seriously, I think we should just put this thing to rest. FT's portfolio has obviously struck a cord with a few people who have been inspired to create their own look-alikes and it's gotten to the point where it's overdone. I don't think they've done it with the intention to outright steal his idea but it doesn't excuse it either. Moral of the story is to just go with your own ideas.
