So it's swooping season again but I think I am safe. I made good friends with a number of Magpies over a year ago, still yet to be swooped by the dozens and dozens that are around.

I guess word of beak has spread and they know I'm cool.
They genuinely communicate. Crows have been observed in experiments to communicate descriptions of people to other crows before.

Australian Crows seem a little more wary about coming up to you or letting you get close.

Magpies are a lot more playful and quirky.

I'm hoping they don't build a nest too close though, there's about 5 cats in the immediate area and no decent bushes for the chicks to hide in when they leave the nest.

For sure. They'll talk to you if you talk to them.

Yep, mimic their whistles and clucks and they talk back. I’ve done it with the group we have around our street and front yard for years. Never swooped.

Works great until you’re on the Gold Coast for a North game with your then much younger kids and a ride is stopped and delayed for half an hour due to a Magpie chick being on the tracks.

As the staff all gathered around waiting for animal control my daughter screams out “IT’S OK……….MY DAD SPEAKS MAGPIE!”

Australia's biggest radiology company has given private medical scans of potentially hundreds of thousands of patients to a start-up company to train AI systems. There's no public information showing patients consented

Got racially abused by a bunch of blokes and nearly jumped at the train station today. Averted by the timely arrival of a group of train station staff. Very 90s, lol.
You ok?

Surprisingly yes, thankfully staff came before it got too nasty. More just disappointed, there's been an increasing frequency of violent crime in my area and it's in full view of CCTV etc. the perps just don't care anymore. This stuff means quality of life goes down a bit, if it can happen to a fit 30 year old bloke then my wife absolutely does not feel safe going to the station by herself. For someone who doesn't drive that's very isolating and limiting. Won't be long before we sell up and move out of Melbourne me thinks.
