Pssst.

  1. Istanbul was Constantinople
    Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Oh Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
    Every gal in Constantinople
    Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
    She'll be waiting in Istanbul

Did you roll Jaffa’s down the aisle roan

every man and his dog knew Newnes to Carlton was going to happen.

The thing I don’t get about this is..

Is everyman one man that has one Dog? Or is it telling us a lie suggesting that every man has a dog? Either way it’s not to be trusted. It could be that Every Man is the name of one guy but then why’s it a saying? He could be a really annoying guy with a really annoying dog and between the two of them they know lots and wherever they are you don’t want to be? Maybe it’s that literally Every man shares one dog? But then the saying would probably be “Everyman and their Dog”.. but I digress.

If everyone shared the same dog, wouldn't it be every man and our dog.

Good point, but that negates the point of saying every man... you might as well say, “our dog will be there”. Which suggests Everyman will be also. Where is a man that lets his dog go to the park without him?

The ‘our’ suggests a collectivity which implies Everyman is happy about sharing the dog. But I’m not sure if this is possible. But I digress
