I had nothing to do last night so I watched this game. Rd17, 1996 North Melbourne V Melbourne. Carey was unbelievable. Strongly recommend watching this game for anyone too young to see him play. He had everything, marking, power, kicking, smarts, handballing. Just a force. No one stamped themselves on a game like Carey

Corey McKernan did some incredible things as well.

Made Neitz look like a hack. Was just sublime in this one.

Neitz was a star.

What would the modern day comparison be? It’d be like Josh Kennedy going back to play on Max King only to be demoralised.
Na neitz could play back a bit and did so in the 90s

I know. I’m just trying to figure out a comparison to the modern day. I thought of Chris Tarrant but he wasn’t on Neitz’s level.
Gotya I think CT is a reasonable comp, he’d probably be something inbetween CT and Chris grant

Not even close imo, but who cares, duck would’ve made anyone look second rate that night.
I mean better than CT but not as good at CG

But Jakovich, Grant, Buckley, Fletcher, Caven, Leppitsch, and many others from the 90's had the wood on him. Beaten regularly.

Slightly off point but Carey mentioned in his book that he had what he considered poor games but he kicked 5 or so goals and the commentators and journalists would have him in the bests but said one of the best games he played was in the wet and iirc against Adelaide but didn’t register much on the stats sheet and the journos gave him nothin, but got a phone call\text (sorry it’s been years since I’ve read it) from Alastair Clarkson saying he played an incredible game. This was before Clarko went on to coach the Hawks dynasty.

He didn’t beat hm. At best he broke even.

Nah Carey didn't kick all that many on Silvagni. They had various great duals.

People say Jakovich was his best opponent, i'd say Silvagni was. In any case both were at the time.

Carey I consider the GOAT but he was beaten various times also, no shame in that either as backman had it much easier back then.

Fair enough. IMO in order to beat your opponent you need to out mark them, not just stop them from marking the ball and kicking goals.

Oh yeah if that's what you meant I agree completely, Silvagni just grabbed shoulders, arms etc to negate and offered nothing otherwise.

Carey did get beaten though and that's a fact - doesn't make him any less of a player to me. Still GOAT as like in cricket you don't get a century every time you bat.

Gary Snr went missing completely many times and was a very selfish player yet his fan club forget that as yes he could be freakish, but he was also not a team player nor consistent.

Interestingly, I was recently speaking with a player who was in the 90's side with Carey. Wayne reckons it was 50:50 against Jakovich across their battles. Fair to say that his teammate strongly argued that Jakovich had the better of him, but was the only one who consistently did.

I seem to recall that Jako did have the better of The King in most of their encounters, but can't recall another back man matching him.

Silvagni completely played outside the rules in his defending. Had skill but was just holding opponents.

I'd have been more impressed if he was a thug tbh.

Jakovich beat Carey as for some reason Carey tried to play the one on one strength battle against him and to Jakovich's credit, played exactly into his favour as he was incredibly strong.

When Carey got on his bike and started running is where he could expose Jakovich.

watched the video posted of Arch, Stevo, Crock and Fairley talking about the 96 premiership - geez i wish some of the blokes on our list had that same kind of passion for the club as it just feels lacking. i get footy is more of a business these days but man i miss 90s footy

Man this sucks

Wayne Carey and Anthony Stevens have come to blows in a sad sequel to the 2002 affair scandal that fractured their friendship.

Carey and Stevens had an ugly altercation on Saturday night at Yarraville’s Railway Hotel, where many former Kangaroos players had gathered to celebrate North Melbourne’s 1996 premiership reunion.

Witnesses said Carey went at Stevens, accusing him of talking behind his back and telling people he couldn’t be contacted and to not bother trying to catch up with him, but then being fine in-person.

Onlookers said at one stage that the pair had to be separated, with several former teammates left stunned by Carey’s outburst.

Stevens – a current board member and president of the Roos’ past players association – didn’t take part in the club’s Marvel Stadium motorcade on Sunday because he was shattered by the heated exchange.

Carey was caught cheating in 2002 with Kelli Stevens – the then-wife of Anthony – in a scandal that fractured North Melbourne and led to Carey’s departure from the club.

North Melbourne captain at the time, Carey sat out the 2002 season before leaving the club in disgrace to join the Adelaide Crows.
