With all the talk of our talented youf, I’d like your take on who will end up having the most decorated career barring injuries. The criteria I have used is the 21years and under from the season just passed. From the following list rank them in order with who you think will end up being the best, with the most decorated at the top. I haven’t included Ryan, McCabe or Scaife because I thought it might be too early to tell with these guys.

The list; D’Ambrosio, Ginnivan, Connor MacDonald, Ward, Serong, Butler, MacKenzie, Weddle, Bailey MacDonald, Hustwaite, Watson, and Dear.

Haha nice post! What a list!

I'll have a go.

Weddle
Watson
Massimo
MacDonald
Dear
Ginnivan
Mackenzie

Ward
Serong
Hustwaite
Butler
MacDonald

High hopes for McCabe too.

Amazing to think that Newc, Day, Moore, Scrimshaw, Worpel, Meek, Battle, Nash and CJ are all 26 or under too.

For mine it is likely clusters.

Could be anything - ceiling is whatever they want it to be

CMac/Wizard and Weddle. All 3 of them have X factor, all 3 of them can already turn a game on its head and will only improve. All 3 of them have confidence and charisma and that cocksure attitude that only generational players have.

Likely top tier players - solid 200 game A-/B+ type players

Ginni, Massimo, Dear and Mackenzie. Ginni and Mass are already very good at what they do and now have the media plaudits to go along with it. Mass stiff not to make the AA squad. I think Mackenzie isn't quite there yet but I think he can make it to this tier of player. Dear had an amazing year as an young and undersized forward. Give him time and he can easily be one of the best tall forwards in the game and could sneak into the category above.

Solid citizens - dependable B+/B- type players that every premiership list needs

Ward, Serong and Hustwaite. Ward and Hust could easily be Brad Sewell type players - and you'd give anything to have a Brad Sewell on your list. Not everyone can be a superstar but I will gladly take players who just get their job done and do it well. Serong might sound odd on here but I rate him and I think he will learn a lot from having Battle and Barrass at the club.

Jury is out

Butler and BMac. Both need more exposure to senior footy to be able to make a better determination.

Good thread. I am on the record here with my leftfield assessment Weddle is the best player on our list and i stick by it (But in cold sober light of day it is Day, Sicily and Lewis.) However Watson and Dear are clearly the ones who have that X factor so in terms of under 21s they are the way

I’d actually have Frenchy Number 1. His class, skill and composure will see him become a bonafide star of the comp in my eyes.

Watson, Weddle and Dear could be raffled for the second spot.

Massimo, Croc and Ward the tier below.

I think all of them have the ability to be PCM winners.

Weddle,
Wiz,
Croc,
Dear,
Frenchie
Ward (I haven't given up on him)

Thats the order I see. Croc is about to explode. The wiz I mean the bloke was made for finals Dear and Weddle with a few more preseasons

MacDonald gonna be so good that he laps the rest and gets on the list twice.

Watson - delivering already and would have made the AA squad had he kicked straight.
Dear - forward who will be top 5 goalkicker for a period of his career.
D’Ambrosio - If he backs it up will make AA a few times.
Weddle - he will take a bit of time, but when he settles into a role he will dominate the game from there.
MacKenzie - midfield is too competitive, but also the best place to win accolades. He's got it all.
Connor MacDonald - the smokie to beat them all. He could become our Dustin Martin.
Ginnivan - His game is maturing nicely. An extra 10% output and consistency will get rewarded.
Ward - Will delivery high output when he gets his time in the sun.

I like them, but unlikely to win accolades or be part of winning premierships.
Serong, Butler, Bailey MacDonald, Hustwaite,

I second this. He has it all , just needs time .

Weddle - The ultimate utility. Could play anywhere, with the possible exception of inside mid. Highest ceiling of anyone on our list - perhaps even the whole of the AFL. Who needs Harley when we have Josh?!

CMac - I remember thinking "we've found one!" while watching that sublime looped handball on the edge of the square that bypassed two opponents and put a fellow-Hawk (Moore?) into space. It might've been in his very first game and I think Sam even referenced the handball in his post-match presser. Has improved steadily since. Could break out into the elite category in 2025.

Wiz - Could he be as good as Cyril? Better? The fact that question could even be contemplated after just one year is perhaps the best answer in itself!

Frenchy - Has looked a class act in spurts. Consistency should be coming soon, after another pre-season. Wouldn't suprise me if he ends up becoming the best of our midfield unit, with his kicking skills cutting through opposing defences.

Hustwaite - Alright, this is more of a wish than a prediction. I realise the knock on his speed and endurance but really hope he makes it because he offers a skillset that differentiates him from our other mids - truly elite hands in traffic. Sam, not a wholly dissimilar player himself in his heyday, may be the best coach/guide/mentor HH could have.

The above five are the ones I have the highest hopes for but any of the others are more than capable of becoming elite - especially Mass and Dear.

A-graders/potential A-graders

Watson, MacKenzie, Dear, Massimo, Weddle, Macdonald

B-graders

Ginnivan, Ward (though he has 'it', and could easily become a genuine A-grader)

Watson is already playing like an A-grader based on late season form and finals.

D'Ambrosio was not far behind him. His last act in the losing semi was otherworldly. Pursued by 3/5 players and running away from the stoppage directly towards the boundary, he stepped around and inside, then somehow got a kick forward with two of them hanging off him.

Dear an A-grader designation is an outlier in this thread so far, but I don't think he will be in two years time. Aside from looking more scrappy dark horse than pure thoroughbred during his first season, he's been blessed with every damn tool in the shed – including a fanatic will to improve and a power athlete's frame that is yet to fill out.

MacKenzie looked like midfield cream towards the end of the year, and his improved tank made him damaging late in some games. With extra size, power and running ability he's going to be our best midfielder.

Weddle's biggest struggle will be to find his strongest 1 or 2 positions on the ground. It won't be a struggle in the grand scheme of things, even if he stays where he played in 2024.

Macdonald is interesting. He's yet to get a run on ball for sustained bursts, because his defensive game wasn't up to it. Sometimes looks like a faster Simon Black, surviving on smarts in the half forward graveyard. You need good half forwards, and our midfield is strong. But will a flank hold his development back?

Ward is still a mystery wrapped in a puzzle. Showed scintillating ability to run and deliver on occasion in both finals. I had to pinch myself watching him at times, because this was not the dinky, left footer who ran out for his first year or two we were watching. Has the most incredible ability to burst from stoppage, and see then execute kicks that are laser like. Just ask Jai Newcombe. If it comes together for Ward, and we see his best then he is a lock for A-grade. Right now, even progressing at the rate he is moving at he'll become a solid B-grader. But will that be enough for him to break into our side? Was not done any favors when his nose was smashed celebrating a goal during finals week 1.
