Just watching Seven News over here tonight (Perth) and signs don't seem great for Ray staying.

While over here for the mid season break, he made it clear on how much better it is in Perth (I agree :p ) and that if he were to stay at the club it would take a few years to get used to Melbourne.

Bugger.

You guys are pessimists.

Remember last year when it was reported Chris Judd was homesick and wanted to go home? Almost every Victorian club was waving their cheque books at him trying to lure him. And what did he do?

Every club has to deal with players that are homesick, and there are just as many homesick players who stay with their club away from home as there are who leave to go home.

Also, how about we get upset about the possibility of him leaving once he gets some actual game time and we see what potential he has.

I didn't see the news - but did he say what he didn't like about Melbourne?

Is it that he just misses his family & friends back in Perth? Someone needs to take him under their wing.... maybe Smithy is the man for that task.

It can't be the lifestyle. Northbridge in Perth is a very very very poor mans take on Lygon Street. Architecture? Perth demolished most of its nice old buildings unlike Melbourne.... etc etc

Football in Perth is a parochial, insular gold-fish bowl. Being in Melbourne, he stands a better chance of developing as opposed to being in Perth which has a demented focus on 2 teams & 2 teams only!! I sometimes think people in WA would be happier with a 2 team comp!!! Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide except for the WAFL.

Anyway - thats my 2 c worth - Pete

What he said to about the same effect... (Can't remember exact words)

'I miss Perth. Of course my family and mates and girlfriend are here. Of course Perth is what I like better and I'm not really ajusting to Meblourne. I'm guessing if I stay it'll be a couple of years before I do.'

The worrying sign there is 'if I stay'

It's not panic stations yet. There's still a year and a half to go and I know he has plenty of mates at the club. I still think we have a good chance of holding onto him, especially given our track record of holding onto interstate players.

However, I hope the club has started work on contingency plans in case the worst case scenario occurs.

First of all, we need to make sure we demand a top 5 pick or equal value for him. West Coast and Freo should both be in or near the 8 next year, so pre-season draft is not likely to be an option. If his only motivation for leaving is going home, then there's not much point leaving just to end up at another Melbourne club or in Adelaide.

Freo and West Coast's highests picks will probably be around 10, maybe slightly lower (i.e. 11, 12). If that's all they can offer, then make sure a player comes with it, or another top 20 pick (if we're being bent over a barrel). Preferably a young and talented tagger or small forward who's keen to come to Melbourne.

Another option would be to arrange a three way trade. The most likely target in this would be Salopek, with the WA club giving a high pick or talented South Australian to Port. I can't see much coming from Adelaide, but perhaps a deal could be struck involving Fergus Watts and a pick or something of similar value to us.

All that's left after that is to hope that one of the WA clubs gets a high pick or that one of their gun victorians is ready to come home. Still, not time to worry yet. We have a year and a half and I suspect that once he starts getting senior games he'll warm to the idea of staying a lot more.

Another well researched recruiting coup. Mr Clayton I dips me lid.

So it's ok for you to bash Scott Clayton (who has proven results) but not for anyone to bash Peter Rhode (who proven failures)?

Rhode is a first time coach, coaching in the main a pack of duds. Clayton is supposed to be the best in the business. A big difference in their respective CV's.

So you may wish to list a few of his outsatnding successes for us. When you do I will list two missed opportunities for the so called successes. He his grossly over rated.

It all depends on POV, many people here believe that our young players (that he picked) haven't kicked on because of the coach, In which case the blame would'nt be put onto Clayton at all.

Regardless please tell me these missed opportunities.

How about "nearly all the of the people who have had problems with Rhode's coaching have mentioned the lack of development of the young players as one of their major concerns" does that do it for you?

MAAAAAAAAAATE !

you can't read? I said "many people HERE" here implying 'on these boards' btw anonymous layperson next draft you choose the (let's say 5) players you think will be the best next year, we'll see how well you go ok?:)

Recruiting footballers is not my chosen profession. If I missed the oppotunities that Clayton had in my work I would be on the dole.

Nevertheless I would not pick home sick interstate kids in front of a Vic kid with ostensibly less talent. I would also have not traded our No 6 pick for short term fixes. Melbourne are doing a better job of identifying talent with higher selections with a no name recruiter. Clayton is over rated, and many of the posters believe the publicity with out looking hard at the results.

Eg Claytons comment on over looking Aron Davey. Para phrased "We saw no value in recruiting light bodied players". Well hello Jordan Mc Mahon, Sam Power, Ryan Hargrave, Guido, Cross, Skippper,Gilby,Faukner,Issac, Wight etc etc
