Crikey, the legend of Fishy Mullett grows by the day. FFS, it reads like he's the second coming of Keithy Greig.

Luke's gone from the chosen one to "he must have photos"

I'm a big Fishy fan, but yeah let's see him smash up the VFL for a few weeks and demand a spot.

Mullett says hi.

Could you explain how you think Mullett and McDonald play similar roles?

If your argument was we structure up differently then I could take that as a reasonable response but claiming they play similar roles shows a lack of knowledge.

Mullet not playing disappoints me. His disposal and run are attributes this team cries out for at times.

Saying Lmac worries me is an understatement.
He is not quick at all and his disposal is woeful. You need one or the other imo

I would also have loved to see Mullett play but just can't see who he replaces at the moment.
Playing Mullett over McDonald changes our structure.

In what aspect?

His ball use, I know he made some blues with the kicking but in general I had the impression that it had improved on last year. Perhaps I was just drunk, who knows.

Anyway, it's round 1, we don't really have much in the way of a form guide to base our decisions on.

Very happy with selection. It seems to be a strong balanced side. I'd take Firrito over Hansen every day of the week. I know he's underdone, but Hansen brings very little to the side besides intercept marking. The rest of his game would be below average for a key defender with his experience.

Only disappointment would be no Mullett in the 25.

Explain to me the role Mullett plays in the side compared to McDonald

Did you just repeat the same question back to me?
It appears I did.

Defense first/Rebounding left footers/push up the ground.

That's what I see when I watch those two play.
The fact that they don't play much footy together too tells me their roles are more similar than you think.

One hits more targets than the other......its that simple for me. Out of those two you pick the guy who you think will butcher the footy the least.

Glad they made the tough call with Hansen, but on recent exposed form Mullet should be playing instead of LMac.

Depends if they think we need a defender or a attacking HB'er. That team is reasonably attacking IMHO so I'm pretty comfortable with the call if that's the case, although I too think his disposal needs to lift. If they think we need an extra lockdown smaller player or want to push him through elsewhere I'm okay with that. Mullet for better or worse is attacking and not a good 1 on 1 defender.

Good to see Hansen & Jacobs out at this stage - both seemed to be a little short and this was obviously the case based on selection.

Wells - F yeah.

Let's say your explanation is correct even though I disagree.

You say their roles are to defend first, does this not put a cross against Mullett immediately?

To a degree.....I've said before that if Mullet's defensive game was better.....it would be an easy decison to pick him.

But for me the pro's out weigh con's. Run & carry, target hitting and goal kicking is better than McDonald's.

How else is he getting a game this week?

I have nothing against him, I love all the players......but I won't tolerate players who turn over the footy. We simply can't afford to carry guys like that if we wanna finish at the pointy end of the ladder.

We have to have higher standards now.

Mullett says hi.

Good for you mate. But guess what, you are not a selector. Get over it.

Save your vitriol for after the game.

I'd like to see both McDonald and Gibson getting the ball forward of centre and Wells receiving the ball in the back half. My reasoning is that Wells never turns it over coming out of the backline. However, both McDonald and Gibson are really dodgy with their disposal when their coming out of defence but much better when there attacking. I'm not sure whether this suits our structure. However, I know that when I'm at the game, I'm going to feel much more confident if it does pan out like I want.

Mullett has been playing more advanced this preseason whilst McDonald has been better defensively. Good team

McDonald or Mullett?? Let's see, both had crap years in 2015. McDonald was 3rd in Rising Star 2014, Mullett scored a few nice running goals in 2014. In NAB Challenge 2016 both have been sorta meh with a couple of flashes of good stuff. McDonald should good flashes against St Kilda. All in all, hardly enough data to cause a meltdown over Round 1 selection. Either one could be in or out.

Who does McDonald play on if he is defending, I have no confidence in him beating the bigger forward like Lynch or McGovern. And I think guys like Milers or Betts have too much speed for him.

If he plays up the ground guys like Smith and Douglas would run him ragged

Ahh Horace.....there's always that one person that constantly likes to go against the grain.

You're tumbling through a rabbit hole if you honestly believe that.

What an awesome response.....let's hope it gets lots of 'likes' :thumbsu:

Mcdonald while not great is much better at coming off his man and has no fear at putting his body on the line to stand in the hole with a big fwd bearing down. In short he will be able to help our talls more so than mullet would. Again im not saying i wouldnt rather mullet, but both have their pos/neg.
