Truly don’t feel that far off. Need the good kickers back, Harry and the real Charlie

Just need to find some form. Could be 2023 2.0 where we start poor end strong
Does he still exist? Looks like a shadow of the players he once was.

Selection integrity and long-term monster contracts are a blight on this team.
Agreed. I thought Ollie was terrific last night. He is a genuine footballer. As is Campo. Haynes played a very good game also. Motlop much better than last week but 1.3 hurt us. We took away the way the Hawks wanted to play but we could not execute or made mistakes that cost us goals. Sadly some of our leaders failed us last night. Walsh went at 50% disposals efficiency yet again. Charlie was invisible. SOS was gallant but dropped a sitter then kicked a point instead of having a set shot directly in front. Doc dropped a sitter just before 3 quarter time that would have been a set shot for goal. Weitering and TDK tried to mark instead of spoiling inside D50 which cost us a goal. Cripps tried a difficult snap instead of giving the handball in board to a player in a better spot. You can’t blame a lot of that on the coach.
You can coach skills, composure, taking the game on, concentration and decision making.

And you can coach a team first mentality, and show them how taking the selfless option is often the best option.

Of course the players have to execute, and we don't know why those instances you highlighted occurred.

But those kinds of things have persisted for years. For me, I am looking at list management and the coaching.

Austin hasn't built a balanced list. And he has never been ruthless, never looking at trading big names for great value.

Vossy not coaching skills. Game plan pretty embarrassing. No selection integrity. Runs them into the ground making them more injury and error prone.

It's not often I call for a coach sacking, but this can't continue.

Happy to eat my words if it turns around.

Geeze even North are winning....

What's that make us look like...

The problem is I have lost interest in all games now and just look at the results at the end of the weekend....

Another year wasted ...

Don't be like that TQLDB. Just gotta frame sh*t in the right manner. You are looking at it all wrong.

After this round we are now only one game and percentage off 6th..... See feels much better doesn't it.

I find golf, coaching kids sport and drinking moonshine when Carlton play all help.

Just saw that 'Round so Far' footage.

Far out that is damning.

There is no thought process with these players. They're being taught that the basic instinct is to simply hack kick forward no matter what.

The fact that Hewett could have handballed to Cowan and open the ground up. Docherty could have passed to Walsh to gain extra meterage and perhaps have him reach Kemp on the far outer side for possibly an easy set shot for goal.

But nope. No handballs. No opening the ground. No gaining extra metres. Just play hot potato and bomb it in and let other players bear the weight.

The boys are not playing like a team right now because they are not looking to make things easier for their teammates.

And because of this, I have no confidence in them winning against the dogs or any team for that matter anytime soon.

Carlton in a nutshell.

We're so hyper-focused on gaining any meterage we don't care if it's to our advantage or not, we just bomb long for territory.

And we ignore the simple handballs to teammates. It's a sorry, sorry sight to see.

Start looking at holidays for September, that always makes me feel good. Fiji is cheap and great weather!!

First crack - “carlton are one handball short of getting back on winners list”

Something to that effect …

Showed visions of our ball carriers having hand ball options nearby to continue running ball forward but instead we kicked it long to a contested situation
And there it is!

Most of the running teams I’ve watched look fluid from D50 - using the ball by hand to players in a better position.

Pleased to hear we have players in a better position - that’s a step ahead of where I thought we were.

Looked to me like we were so consumed with defence, that we’d forsaken running to support.

In - creative handball.
Out - dump kicking.

Yeap - makes sense to use more handballs and run and carry rather than dump kicks forward that typically end up 50/50.

those examples showed players under pressure and when you kick under pressure it’s often not targeted at a team mate it ends up a 50/50 contest.

handballing rather than kicking when under pressure should increase chance of maintaining possession..

As long as you know and you can 'kind of' get the handball without looking because your team's structure demands a player be where the outlet should be. Instead of handballing the same direction you're running in a straight line so you just accelerate the pressure into whoever you just gave the ball to.

Maybe. I'm similar to you - been struggling to understand why we play the way we do for 3 years. It's the best explanation I can come up with.

Assuming that the coaches are competent and not complete morons, and assuming the gameplan is built to maximise the strengths of our list and minimise it's weaknesses, it makes some sense.

* Isolate Williams at FF. He's very good one v one in the air and on the ground. Needs a dangerous opponent to mind him, one less to fly third up against Harry/Curnow.

* Kemp up forward. He's terrible one v one, but can launch at the footy. Give him a free run and jump at the footy and he'll mark it more often than not.

* Two of the best KPFs in the game who can (generally) bring the ball or ground or mark it contested. With a fit Williams and decent 3rd talls in Kemp (or SOS), we can isolate them better than we could last season.

Combine that with poor flankers and small forwards, who outside of Motlop aren't good for much more than pressure, and one of the best contested midfields in the competition, and you can start to see the reasoning.

If the stars align, we might end up a better version of 2023. TDK has improved substantially, Cripps is in better form, Cerra looks to be building to his best. Walsh is a currently a shell of the player he was, Newman is a massive loss but we might get him back in the run home. We'll need a fit and firing Eli, and Boyd at his best to inject some skill and class. Smith a big loss.

Hugely vulnerable to injuries to key players and will again probably be our undoing, but can also see why the coaches believe this might be our best bet at impacting if all goes well.

Doesn't explain nor excuse the fumbling, rudimentary mistakes, poor communication. If we can't get the basics right, season is over before it started.

Again, not saying I agree with the approach, but it's the best explanation I've got to why we play the way we do.
The Doggies say hi. As does Ugle-Hagan.

Their injury list:

We probably had the worst 5 players on the ground and still managed to hit the scoreboard the same amount of times the Hawks did. That is crazy considering one side is apparently coached by a dud and the other a super coach. (Which I somewhat agree with)
Yes we have a hell of a lot of issues but there’s a total exaggeration of how bad that performance was.
We also have the 3 best in the field and probably close to 5 of the best 7 or so.... That top end can mask many a deficiency.

Watch Hawthorn do this - their structure around the contest is so consistent - they often handball blindly into space knowing someone will be there.

Speed in transition isn’t always foot speed, more often it’s being well set up with outlets around the ball & a willingness to run & provide the next option.

I honestly can't argue with any of this. I agree with the discussion that the game had gone extremely outside.

I'm struggling to see how we fix it as we just haven't got the kickers in the side (they need to bring them in) to make a real difference...
Handball to space first. Find time & watch our kicking get better.
