Merrett may be a favourite up in Brisbane, one can only wonder why, but I honestly don't recall a more unpopular than Merrett ever before amongst a lot of the Melbourne faithful.
I've never really thought about it this way, bit I think you are right. Brisbane's form in Melbourne since 2005, despite the occasional good win, has the whole been pretty poor. During that time we have been subjected to some terrible thrashing and a number of games that were pretty much over after the first 10 minutes. Some of us in Melbourne, those who don't go to every game, have gone for seasons without seeing a win. Clearly Merrett isn't to blame for these results, but when a side is getting thrashed and someone consistently stands out as being among the poorer performers, then questions about their value to the team are sure to arise. The switch to the forward line, which has never really worked, has only compound the problems that many supporters have with Merrett and despite the argument that we have nobody else, his terrible form this year has been the straw that broke the camels back for many. I'm sorry, but we shouldn't make too much of a virtue out of the fact that opposition sides have to put a defender on him and the fact that he brings the ball to ground. These are hardly premium skills and should not make a player a walk up start as a key position forward.

Wow.... just wow.

I certainly only like players who perform well in Brisbane.

The others I accuse of not having their heart in their profession.

As a supporter living in Melbourne I have to say..

What?

This is a whole new level of scapegoating.

Well that's just you.

Read the post.

I did. It would have made a lot of sense if you'd cut out the first few sentences. I agree with some of the second half of it. As it is it looks like you're drawing an extremely long bow, even if that wasn't your intention.

I seriously don't.

Considering his inability to mark the ball, I doubt it, but granted if he did, I'm sure he did still be spraying them all over the place.
I seriously do Dylan I seriously do. He would blitz them. To make you feel better NEAFL is even less skilled than the AFL.

Dude can't kick, that's pretty obvious. The truth of the matter is that Lisle is not aggressive enough and Michael is not smart enough (seriously) to play football, even at NEAFL level. Merry, while down on form (having babies will do that) is a number of steps above both. He is experienced, aggressive, displays onfield leadership, and takes marks. See two weeks ago after he rearranged the Melbourne player face.

There is no better alternative. I'm not sure you understand the gap between NEAFL and AFL.

I was always aware that Merrett was contracted until the end of 2016, which even at the time of his re-signing I considered excessive.

Well we have Merrett for two more years...at this stage of our travail this season as a result the lack of a forward of Mitch Clark's ability and the end of Brown's career it might be a good idea to see what eventuates next year before pushing this discussion much further.
