Now I'm confused.

You're not looking forward to the game because you're certain of our defeat ... but there's no reason as to why you'd have a bad time at the game because you can sit with folks who dislike the same player you dislike.

Is that a good time?

Completely unrelated.

Watching 21 of the Lions players is always a good time, particularly when one is celebrating their 100th game. It would be nice though actually going to a game thinking you're half a chance of winning. I'm not sure you could say we are with a straight face.

It isn't uncommon in the US for anyone to refer to their coach as 'coach' <insert their name>, which I inadvertently picked up having attended a US college.

Apologies if doing so has upset some of you precious souls.

Not upset (nor precious) just was genuinely confused as to whether you were suggesting he wasn't actually the coach or was a puppet or something. Thanks for explaining :)

I'm not because there is nothing worse than when the club concedes the game before a ball has even been bounced, pretty much like the first half of the season.

Merrett may be a favourite up in Brisbane, one can only wonder why, but I honestly don't recall a more unpopular than Merrett ever before amongst a lot of the Melbourne faithful. Sure Aka pissed a lot of people off, but the man was a magician which more than made up for what a dickhead he could be.

A lot of fans in Brisbane (and Melbourne) have not forgotten what a stalwart Merrett has been at full back for a goodly number of years...even to the point of being considered up with the best full backs in the business at times.

And many have noticed he always re-signs early with no outrageous demands for money.

Many also know that he bleeds maroon, blue and gold and will be a one club player and would never leave the club in the lurch.

I for one think that he is capable for the next two years at least of giving valuable service at full back and selflessly performing any other role that is handed to him to the best of his ability.

While we're (sort of) on the topic, this game is Merrett's best opportunity in a while to have some impact I reckon. He's an awkward match-up for all of the Pies defenders. If he has another shocker it might be worth looking at another option for the last couple of games...but honestly if the players come out like they do last weekend Merrett's form is the least of our worries.

The suggestion that he be delisted is ridiculous on so many levels. He is seriously out of form but goldfish memories for some people, I swear.

We need our goats to scape. :)

Just summed up my thoughts exactly about Goose Maguire, who I must add is only 6 months older than everyone's sweetheart.

Who is 5 days younger than the greatest player ever to play.

Who I reckon could easily get a guernsey for geelong right now, especially with their game plan.

Plus there's that guy who's playing his 100th game tomorrow. I reckon he could be a great fit for a team like hawthorn, especially with his physicality.

Luckily they're both loyal Lions and we can build a team around them. We're pretty lucky really, for most of the year we've at least kept our three best players (Patfull, Rockliff and Hanley).

Who doesn't love Goose?

I'm still at a loss why we would have signed him on such a long term deal to start with.

Simple... his form warranted it...and it will be proven to have been a good idea who he is relieved of the task of pinch hitting in the forwards.

But to the point...would you still delist Merrett now that you have belatedly become aware the he is contracted until the end of 2016?.

You have to admit, he's not in a good place at the moment.
Not sure he has to be trashed by certain people all the time though.
Some people seem to love having someone as a scapegoat.
Not sure what benefit it is to anyone going on and on and on about someone perceived faults.
As far as trading him or dropping him to the reserves ..well that is just codswollop!!!!
Pretty sure that is still a word.
If its not I apologise.
Go Lions.do your best tomorrow.

I was always aware that Merrett was contracted until the end of 2016, which even at the time of his re-signing I considered excessive.

I wouldn't trade or delist him, but I would give him some time off. It's kinda upsetting really to see someone who is obviously struggling continue to be thrown to the dogs.

The coaching staff must want him to play. So he will I guess.

Insinuating that Goose was not included in favour of Sauce at the beginning of the season due to favouritism is pretty out of order in my opinion. Leppa could only go on form and performances in training and there is no doubting that Dan is a lot more athletic and probably a better trainer due to the well-known issues that Maguire has had with his body.

Leppa's experiments with Maguire in the forward line in the twos early in the season attests to the idea that he wanted to put a physical presence into the forward line which no one else really offers at the moment. Goose back and Sauce forward have corresponded with our best form too, but it doesn't necessarily mean it would have improved outcomes if that is the way we played from the opening round considering the issues with experience and form we have had right through the team.

I have no doubt that if we wanted to sacrifice some goals out of the mozzies and have a forward that could kick goals and mark the football instead that didn't offer a physical presence we would give someone else a go, but the idea is to have at least one brute force player in the forward line. Merrett is one of our marquee players and deserves a chance to play himself back into form in the ones when no better option presents itself.
