Autopsy Rd19 vs West Coast

I was out for the first half yesterday so catching it this morning. Apart from missing a couple of set shots it's not as bad as I had imagined - forward entries were mostly under pressure, and the ones that weren't, saw good passing to forwards in scoring positions.

The first quarter has also seen, to these old eyes anyway, some of LMac's best work this season. I know when you know it works out ok that the poor stuff doesn't bother you as much as it does live, but there has been some autopsy harping about individuals that I don't understand based on that team performance.

It's never as bad as what's written on here.

Luke had a shocking stinker of a 2nd quarter but after that he was fine. Didn't butcher a ball or miss any targets and his opponent had no influence in the 2nd half. In saying that though, he wasn't really involved in much play in the last.

anyone disappointed with Atley the past month?

He hasn't had the same impact. That said, our midfield has also been well down in that time and Atley may have been tasked with trying to implement higher pressure up the ground and moving away from what he's been doing so well. (Or he might just be struggling a bit). Lot's of players look bad when you get pantsed in the middle.

Tom Cole picked up this week's Rising Star nomination

He was slightly bemused to gain recognition after a 40-point loss to North Melbourne, but his 18 disposals, 11 intercept possessions and five rebound 50s made him a worthy recipient.

Engineered award or what.

Wtf...

I thought he was taking the piss.

Anyhow - great four quarter game by the boys. Great pressure from the start and not a bad player.
Just need to hit targets instead of the hit and hope.
Cunners/Ahern massive games
Daw can’t be the same player that was on our list for the previous 8 seasons - most improved.
Clarke/ Dumont best games they’ve played
Keep the heat on and we can make finals

Yeah, all piss easy to say after a win but how many times have we see Scott's holding his ground where we are flat out never in it?

Only to see the last quarter token move of taz or maj up forward for 10 mins to show the magnets were thrown around lol

There has been one game where we were flat out never in this year and that was last week.

What is the point of making changes for the sake of it? Especially with a side so structured that its dependent on players being able to do particular jobs. (I'm talking game day changes here not selection.)

Its easy to look back at someone like Sheedy who revolutionised the game by making changes mid game that did actually change the flow of the game but its a long time ago and footy is very different. Unless you have someone like Daw with amazing athleticism - whose marking is an asset anywhere, or a carey who can almost do anything, or a player like Dangerfield/Ziebell (5 goals in a half v pies last year) who can move forward and unbalance the defense its a lot harder to gain a match up advantage by moving players around these days. Its incredibly rare to be able to move a player to exploit a weakness unless that player has a point of difference that can't be matched by any opposition player.

Also ... we beat the Swans in Sydney because Scott was able to recognise the other team had set their entire game plan around beating Brown on the forward line and attacking off him. He then made appropriate changes that won us the game.

So I think he's actually demonstrated the ability to make match winning changes and adapt during games. And he did it early and fully committed to it which is part of the reason it was successful.

We weren't in the port game either.

The side is so structured because Scott's wants it that way obviously. Hardly any players play off instinct, and it's one of the reasons our small forwards cant kick a goal for shit. I'm very sure they are capable, but Scott's wants them to lock the ball onto f50, which they rarely do anyway lol That would be one change I'd like to see!

Same with when teams get a run on. Havnt seen Scott's change up to much when teams kick 5 in a row on us. Structure, structure, structure. It only works when the team as a whole play within it...

Dont even start me on stoppage set ups against cola, FFS. It was like Heeney was a ghost. Was it players sticking to structures when 7 points up or simply the players faults for not being able to stop easy clearances? We should of had an extra in at the coalface once we were up - positioned defensively. Mind you, plenty more went wrong than the above- cluster**** of the highest magnitude...

Stop acting like people are calling for a complete shuffle of the magnets when all it takes is the most minute tinkering to save a game or a small sacrifice to save a moment and get the ball on your terms.

No one wants taz up forward, but if he does go forward, I'd like to try it in the 3rd, not when the game is done and dusted with 8 mins to go...

Scott's is a good coach when we are ahead, but probably only average when we are behind... We lose more games that are close than we win and we hardly ever close a deficit at 3q time
