The rule is there so teams don't hold up the game while they pour back into defence, but no further play will happen with a kick after the siren so its not smothering options forward of play for the side with the ball.

Don't drop it on the ground then, every single AFL player knows or should know that.

It is sad... He has had the tendency to give away kicks or fly when he shouldn't through his career. The difference now is he isn't doing all the other stuff that cut through teams. A rest for him would be good.
