Damn it... There must have been a leak of information...

I will have to announce it now then.

I would like to announce that after exhaustive attempts and deep contract negotiations, the Sunbury Kangaroos have employed a new Under 18's assistant coach, a man that has an extensive knowledge of local football and will become my new eyes and ears come this Saturday morning at Gilbert Gordon.

I am extremely pleased to announce OMNI as the SKFC Under 18's assistant coach for the remainder of 2007. :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Yes I can confirm that I have been approached to assist the mighty Kanga 18s in their finals quest for 2007. Let me say that it is an absolute honor to get the opportunity to lend a hand to the great man at such a close proximity & relish the chance to bask in his impending glory !

Both Sims and Ruane were injured in the first half of the year, hence why the came 4th and 5th. With your thought on rooza, last year when he won the Bowen, no one new who he was except for his hair. This year he he highly rated and he was good enough to continue his good form, after the injury of course. This yeah he has played all positions of the field, which is an awesome thing to do, he played full back, CHB, centre, chf and full foward aswell sa on the ball and he has also won the goal kicking. I believe personally he has has an alround better year. Jeremy Jose although he is highly rated, people come to expect alot from him. He pretty much is an onballer who rucks also. Truly deserves first. Was also great to see Jeff get some credit coming 2nd, good return after a life threatning accident last year.

You nailed the problem right here burraz. Now I know a lot of people at Diggers Rest think I don't like them. But that's not the case. I'm a big fan of many of the Burra players, I just think they could be performing much better.

Last year they enjoyed pretty much a golden run with injuries, except of course with Heritage. The midfield still fired, Payney kicked goals and the backline was strong under pressure. Obviously not having Jose, Walshe and Hoare for the GF made life tough. But the main problem was in front of the big sticks. There was a reliance on Payne to do the bulk of the goalscoring, with Arnel Davis as a crumber and on-ballers floating forward. Now that's not such a bad thing if your full forward is a gun like Werner or James (Aaron or Lee). But Chris wasn't, not that it is his fault.

Over the summer, you guys barely recruited, while the rest of the competition topped up. Kangaroos picked up Bonnici and later Cuffe; Romsey got back Connellan, Edwards, Nettlebeck; Woodend-Hesket recruited Sipthorp, Salpietro, Donovan, Bowen; Riddell got Leigh Coles and a heap of Under 18s. Half-way through the year you got a handy forward flanker in Kris Marsh, who will be a good contributor in this year's finals series (for your sake I hope its a series and not a final), but I think you guys expected it to happen again. Not individually, but as a group.

Now I rate Ruane, both as a player and as a bloke. He could become a very handy forward for Diggers Rest. But he doesn't have a lot of support up forward and that's where I think the Burra fall away slightly. Look at some of the forward lines in this competition:

Woodend - Barker, Dowling, Sipthorp, Salpietro, Forrest.
Riddell - Mick Allen, Besanko, Wadden, Harrison, Petran.
Romsey - Morgan, Burlak, AJ, Dawson, Richmond, Baker.

These forward lines can turn a game in 10 minutes. There is no doubting that your midfield/ruck combination is as good as any, but if they don't have a lot to kick to it makes life easy for the opposition's defence. Just about all the premiership sides I can remember in modern RDFL history have had pretty potent forward lines. Of the top six sides, Diggers Rest scored 168 points less than the second worst Romsey, and a whopping 611 less than the best in Riddell. The fact that you had the third least amount of points kicked against you not only suggests you have a very solid backline, but it also says to me that your midfielders work back to create pressure on the ball carrier.

Once again, I'm not trying to make a personal vendetta against Diggers Rest. I get along well with a lot of guys down at the Burra. But as a football observer, I think you need to recruit a key forward over the summer to really capitalise on your strong midfield. They don't grow on trees and come at a price, but as Lee James proved, they can be worth their weight in gold.

Good luck on Saturday.

Very good point.. Ricky should definitely be in the side, as for Crimmins, I seen him ruck in the interleague game Im sure.. But Jay Boyle could easily go into the ruck and push Crimmins to CHF.

hahah you would have seen crimmins at CHF.. he definitely wasnt in the ruck..
i was in the middle and it was jay boyle as ruckman.

I can see where you are coming from but roo didnt play forward all year. If he did im sure he would have kicked a whole lot more goals. We did recruit, Marsh, Rust, Thompson all big fellas. Along with Bull and a few others. Yes it does seem we need are more permanent forward but why make it predictable?? Rotate them and keep players guessing?? It may not have payed off as yet but could be a work in process? Im not saying you have anything against diggers, arent we just discussing out thoughts and views which is what forums are all about arent they?

That was the excitement of waiting for you to step out in orange for the senior game...

Ladies, Gentleman and Umpires.

Mike has returned after a long sojourn to do his end of season review and possibly, if he gets a chance a match review or two by the end of today. Due to the possibility of a 25 degree day though, Mike may be unable to complete the task in its entirety.

Riddell - Top of the ladder, one loss for the year, possible Bowen Medallist. Riddell have done it all this year. A superb season for the Darrin Rowsell led side, most impressively, it is the youngsters that have stepped up a notch to cover the faithfully departed of Riddell. Losing Lee James, Michael Gadsden, Cory Towers, Peter Robertson etc at the beginning of the year was always going to be a challenge for Scooter to see if he was able to step up to the plate and deliver. Deliver he did, recruiting Michael Allen (Not the brother of Jason thankyou Mr Diamond), Michael's real brother Nathan Allen and Leigh Coles delivered goal kicking and midfield options to the lads under the arched bridge. Add to that youngsters James Petran, Ryan Leitch, Murray McDougall, James Climas and Matthew Shaughnessey and the Bombers picked up 5 ready made senior footballers, a dream every side would love to come true. Not since the fab 4 at the Kangaroos came through the Under 18's to change the face of a club has a group of young individuals had such an impact on the senior side. Riddell has proven themselves a class above the opposition this year and positioned perfectly for "Threepeat". Leading the charge from the middle is Justin Bellville, the "Dreadlocked One" has had the ball on a string so far this year, dominating around the ground at stoppages and using his superb skills to deliver to the dangerous forward line. He has so far been unstoppable and has to be one of the favorites for the Bowen Medal. Jason Allen has again been the best captain in the competition. He is clearly the best CHB in our game at the moment (not dominating stoppages and roving packs thankyou Mr Diamond) and inspire's his side to greater heights every week. He is the key to Riddell's shot at a "Threepeat". Overall, Riddell has the best balanced side in the comp, the most talented side in the comp and at this point are clear favorite to take away number 3 in a row.

Key Players - Michael Allen, Dean Besanko, Heath Wadden, Jason Allen, Justin Bellville, Aaron Blade, James Climas.

Overall season rating - 9.5 (Can improve by not dropping a game)

Next up - Woodend/Hesket

Woodend/HesketThe "Challenger". The only team at this point capable of challenging Riddell in season 2007. Woodend are the most evenly balanced side in the competition with only one real genuine "Standout" player, but 21 stars behind him. Daniel Sipthorp is the clear standout (Obviously). His ball winning ability, long driving kicks and durability make him the player to stop at Woodend. Around him, Adam Johnstone, the skipper, the heart and soul of Woodend. Johnstone has a strong work ethic and works all day for his team. Almost the barometer of the Hawks, Johnstone will usually play on the best midfielder for the opposition. If he wins his contest, the Hawks win the game. Guy Donovan and Jarrad Arnold also play through the middle for the Hawks; both are capable of being the star for the day, with some Hawk observers rating Donovan a chance to win the Hawk best and fairest.
We then move forward, Luke Barker leads the Hawks out of the goal square. He is the best and only true Full Forward in the competition this year. Strong hands, beautiful kick, Barker is capable of big bags of goals that will hold Woodend in a strong position come finals time. A player to watch in the finals series. Rick Dowling is one of the premier small forwards in the competition, another capable of big bags, he is a smart, wily competitor that often takes an opposition backline to pieces. When he is on fire he creates opportunities for the other forwards such as Salpietro and Forrest, both who are dangerous enough on their own. Then there is "Pods". Paul Podbury is one of the premier smalls in the games. He is capable of getting plenty of the ball up forward and in the midfield, often slipping under the opposition guard while he is systematically taking them apart. But the key to the Hawks in Mike’s humble opinion is the backline. Warren Else, Adam Morton, the Hardwick brothers all the shutdown specialists needed. The Hawk backline keeps the opposition score down with strangling defence, allowing the forwards and midfield to do the damage required putting them away. The Hawk defence will be the key to their challenge of the mighty "Threepeat".

Key Players – Daniel Sipthorp, Adam Johnstone, Paul Podbury, Rick Dowling, James Forrest, Matt Stacey.

Overall Rating – 9.0 (Cattle is available, can they use it).

Next up – Sunbury Kangaroos

Sunbury Kangaroos – "Are they a legitimate contender" It is the question that has been asked of the Kangaroos all year. Going into finals, the question is still being asked. Several very good players in the side but can they put it all together and play some consistent football?
Damien Niki, one of the biggest impact players in our competition, leads the Roos. When Damien is on, the Roos are on. His attack on the football and intensity is rarely matched by anyone. The much vaunted midfield of the Roos, Leigh and Mark McInerney and Daniel Bonnici are fed by arguably the best ruck combination in the game, Steve James and Jamie Cuffe. Giving the midfield an opportunity to get first hands on the ball, even then the Roos can throw Leigh Sporle into the ruck for that something extra. Cuffe has been superb since his return and can only get better. If the Roos learn to use him more when up forward, he could almost become the unstoppable force come finals time.
The Roos forward line consists of several players that, if they show up in the right frame of mind could turn the game, unfortunately, that hasn’t happened enough this year. Danny Miskin, Dean Helmers, Niki and Garth Ploog need to step up their impact on games during the finals series, the key to the forward line though could be Joeb Ploog. When he is on, he is very hard to stop. The Roos backline is the opposite of the forwards, under valued. Robbie Ellis is one of the best backman in the competition, while Bobby Johnson and Nathan Hole have been superb all year. Ashley Powell is one of the better stoppers in the league. The Roos need to put everything together, if they do, they are a big chance at the big one.

Key Players – Mark McInerney, Leigh McInerney, Daniel Bonnici, Jamie Cuffe, Joeb Ploog, Dean Helmers, Damien Niki.

Overall Rating – 8.0 (Are they the real deal?)

Next up – Romsey

The invites have gone out. If you are a chance of winning something, they invite you. You can contact your club and they should be able to get you a ticket. That's the only way Harry gets a guernsey!! I think the price is around $60.00. Well worth it though, it's a great night, with plenty of beverages to be consumed. There will be plenty of Big Footy Celebs ther also. I'm just going to walk around saying alias's all night and see who reacts, then I can finally start putting some names to faces. :thumbsu:

Romsey – Can Romsey really compete with the big guns? That is the question everyone is asking of the Redbacks. They certainly have the players that can lift to the occasion, Brydon Morgan is one of the true guns of the league, his ball winning ability and game-turning ability is unmatched in the league. Matty McClellan is one of the most clean skilled players going around, he hits targets almost every time and finds the ball in space, with Chris Wilson on the other wing, the wide open spaces are evenly balanced between these 2 players. Steve Burlak is in red-hot form up forward. Opposition sides must shut him down if they are to beat the Redbacks, he is a great mark and a superb kick of the ball and if he gets his hands on it just 5 times within 50, its likely that 5 goals will be sitting next to his name. The backline of Romsey is a key. Mick McCarthy and Warren Kairns are both long time solid backman of the league and the 2 key forwards of the opposition are always going to have a task to have a big impact on the game. Romsey also use their young guns very well. Ben Richmond, Danny Harrison, Ben Sullivan and John Baker have all played senior football and had an impact on the games they have played, but will they be able to step up and handle senior finals?[/SIZE]
Key Players – Steve Burlak, Matt McClellan, Brydon Morgan, Cameron Dawson, Warren Kairns

Overall Rating – 7.5 (Can they compete?)

Next up – Diggers Rest

Diggers Rest – Are Diggers capable of reaching the lofty heights of last year? Who knows, but they certainly have the players if they are good enough. Shaun Sims is arguably one of the best leaders in the competition and a quality player, if Sims fires, then Diggers fires. He needs help though from the other midfielders. Steve Ruane needs to recapture his Bowen Medal form if Diggers are to be a force. Jeff Heritage has been solid all year and is a genuine top player. Jeremy Jose is one of the leading ruckman in the league and needs to give these guys and Campbell Walshe first use of the ball. Leigh Rust and Craig Thompson have been good recruits for Diggers and given them something a little extra up forward and with Thompson, in the ruck.
The key for Diggers is if they can see the return of Cole Laurie and also if Bevan Green can return to his best form at CHB. If these 2 lads can come back and fire, Diggers are a big chance to cause some upsets and return to the top. Steve Hoare is another the Burra need to fire. He is a mobile big man who can cause some serious headaches to opposition teams.
Can the Burra go all the way? Mike doesn’t believe so. But hey, stranger things have happened.

Key PlayersJeremy Jose, Shaun Sims, Steve Ruane, Jeff Heritage, Bevan Green, Cole Laurie.

Overall Rating6.0 (Can they lift?)

sorry to dissapoint there champ, they had me in the blockbuster of the day:thumbsu:
And what a job you did... :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Pity about that one shocker decision though :D:p

Big, Big night.... You will see the SHOW on the D A N C E floor :D

Can't wait to see that again IMS. After my official duties on the night you will see the RDFL's no. 1 journo on the dancefloor. After breaking the alcohol drought last Saturday night at Kilmore's end of season ball, I'm planning on getting on the juice once again. Should be a ripping night, got a motel room booked and all. No sleeping on the Free Press floor again :D
