Im not haivng a dig at Essendon or Collingwood, they put on a great show and obviously my idea will probably never happen but I believe the idea has merit.

I believe that instead of it being Essendon vs Collingwood every year, it should be the top two victorian teams from the previous year. Start the game at 2:10pm EST, and straight after start the next ANZAC game, between the top two ranked non victorian teams.

Just look at some of the match ups that would have eventuated over the past 10 years

2000 - North Melbourne vs Carlton (Brisbane vs West Coast)
2001 - Essendon vs Melbourne (Brisbane vs Sydney)
2002 - Essendon vs Richmond (Brisbane vs Port Adelaide)
2003 - Collingwood vs Essendon (Brisbane vs Port Adelaide)
2004 - Collingwood vs Essendon (Brisbane vs Sydney)
2005- St.Kilda vs Geelong (Port Adelaide vs Brisbane)
2006- St.Kilda vs Geelong (Sydney vs West Coast)
2007- Melbourne vs Bulldogs (West Coast vs Sydney)
2008- Geelong vs Kangaroos (Port Adelaide vs West Coast)
2009- Hawthorn vs Geelong (Sydney vs Adelaide)
2010- Geelong vs St.Kilda (Adelaide vs Brisbane)

some great double headers...2002, 2004, 2006, 2009

IF they are going to change it i would it make it a winner stays on match. Winner plays next year vs the top ranked Victorian team from previous year.

I can just imagine a tribute to the ANZACS by about twenty thousand spectators in a Melbourne vs Footscray (or whatever they are called these days) game on ANZAC day. Get real.

I went to great pains to book my seat for this year's game when bookings opened, by I can tell you I won't be turning up for a Melbourne vs Footscray game.

do you reckon that had something to do with the fact that you support Essendon?

The earth must have moved somewhere in Port Adelaide OP, I had the exact same thoughts on the weekend. Hence I think it is a great idea.

I'm not too fussed about Port Adelaide not being involved at the 'G on this day, but I am against Essendon and Collingwood "owning" it.

For those who think "But what if Melb v WB play - how boring"... if you were to equate playing in this game to playing in a final, the only final that these two have played each other in modern times (1994?) they drew 65K.. so I'd hope that a similar turnout between the two sets of supporters (as they would both be riding a wave of success given they are the top two performing Vic teams), plus the neutrals that are attracted to the event itself - it won't lose anything.

Any combination of vic teams would draw 75k+, as many neutral supporters attend the match for the event - not to see Collingwood v Essendon.

Wouldn't you think that the diggers cared more for the attendance at the dawn service before the attendance at the MCG on ANZAC day?

I think this idea has a lot of merit, as it gives all players an opportunity to earn the right to play this match.

OK, we can do that as long as everyone else relinquishes their queen's birthday game, 2x derbies, opening round game, 2x games locked in v Collingwood/Dons/Blues etc etc.
No?

yes.

Almost as good as Akers idea for a 'rotation system'. He came out during the week and said how great it would be for other clubs to get the 1m per club generated at the gate. Is he aware that it's been PROVEN people won't show up?

Essendon and Collingwood DID create this day. THEY made it.

Sheeds went to the RSL and asked permission then went to Malthouse and asked for support which was absolutely forthcoming. Then these men went about selling the opportunity to the members and supports who bought it.

Irrelevant to position both clubs supporters show up on the day.

As Hird said last night on the footy show "if I build the best house in the street, shouldn't I be allowed to live in it?"

This is a day which Essendon and Collingwood created. Take those clubs away and the day would fall apart. Argue it all you like but at the end of the day football WAS played on Anzac Day before Essendon and Collingwood turned it into what it is today. And when it was played.... crowds were about as well supported as the Queens birthday game and other matches. Just another game.

If the AFL deem it fit to take back the day and share it around they ought to write a cheque to Essendon and Collingwood for their input into the day thus far and their marketing to create what it is.

Just look at some of the match ups that would have eventuated over the past 10 years

2000 - North Melbourne vs Carlton ATT: 29k (Princes Park), Margin:30 pts
2001 - Essendon vs Melbourne ATT: 48k, Margin:6 pts
2002 - Essendon vs Richmond ATT: 58k, Margin:52 pts
2003 - Collingwood vs Essendon ATT: 63k, Margin:66 pts
2004 - Collingwood vs Essendon ATT: 57k, Margin:33 pts
2005- St.Kilda vs Geelong ATT: 45k (at Docklands), Margin:18 pts
2006- St.Kilda vs Geelong ATT: 48k (Docklands), Margin:18 pts
2007- Melbourne vs Bulldogs ATT: 25k, Margin:6 pts
2008- Geelong vs Kangaroos ATT: 38k, Margin:13 pts
2009- Hawthorn vs Geelong ATT: 70k, Margin:8 pts
2010- Geelong vs St.Kilda ???

Except for '03 and '04 you could expect to add at least another 10% to the attendances due to the 'blockbuster' nature. Saints v Cats would have drawn much bigger crowds at the 'G in '05 and '06. Only 2 blowouts amongst them, ironically the biggest includes the 'Pies and the 'Dons. Every Victorian team represented.

The idea might have some merit.

You mean like North and Friday Night Football?

You mean like North and Friday Night Football?

No he means ANZAC DAY ...

PS: Friday night Footy is controlled by the TV Station, They request whom they want to see on Friday... Take it up with the AFL and the TV station. North Do not rate (I have not having a go at North) and the TV station want value for their money.

Love ANZAC match Coll and Ess put on each year, been to them all. Also love Coll V Carl as much or more. ANZAC day benefits from having 2 big clubs involved, you risk returning the match to more like it was before Coll and Ess started this promotion

In my opinion of the 10 matches you have listed (2000-2009) four (2000, 2001,2007,2008) would only attrack an average crowd, while three 2005, 2006, 2009) would get a good crowd without necessarily being a sellout. the remaining 3 matches would sell out but 2 of them are Coll V Ess

Out of interest below is what the matches you listed drew when they played each other 1st time that year

2000 NM v Carl Princes Park 28944
2001 Ess v Melb MCG 47452
2002 Ess v Rich MCG 67453
2003 Ess V Coll MCG 62589 (reduced capacity at MCG)
2004 Ess v Coll MCG 57294 see above
2005 Geel v St K Etihad 44814
2006 Geel v St K Etihad 48313
2007 Melb v Bulldogs Etihad 24584
2008 Geel V NM Kardinia 24288
2009 Hawth v Geel MCG 69593

As Hird said last night on the footy show "if I build the best house in the street, shouldn't I be allowed to live in it?"

Not if you build it on parkland.

We could all have built a great house there with a great big fence, but we prefer it gets used by all.

That is wrong. ANZAC day crowds are made up of almost entirely Coll and Ess supporters. The crowd nos are little different from that that would turn up to Coll v Ess if it wasnt played on ANZAC day or on that that would turn up for Coll v Carl or Carl v Ess

There are a few thousand neutrals that bunk numbers up a little. Some of the matches listed would struggle to get 50000 turning up to the MCG on ANZAC day. Have a look at ANZAC day nos at the G before Coll v Ess started
