Nice work WHL. If you could include the Thornton death date error in your email as well, that would be great.
Col H and Steve R were grateful the corrections and notification of the four they were missing from last year (they already knew about 5 of the 9 in the list)

Also let them know about Ernie O'Rourke's passing

Yep and still going strong the last I heard (a few months ago), mind-boggling to think his VFL debut was before the start of WW2.

He turned:

4 years old when Lou Richards was born.
9 years old when Bob Davis and Ron Richards were born.
14 years old when EJ and Yabby were born.
17 years old when Barass was born.
37 years old when Trevor Barker was born.
48 yo when Dean Bailey was born.

Lastly, the year he turned 78yo, Harley Balic was born.

This list in the season guide is missing:
  1. John Barrett (Footscray/Fitzroy) - died 11/08/2023
  2. Steve Beaumont (Essendon) - died 20/11/2023
  3. Daryl Cowie (St K/Richmond) - died 19/12/2023
  4. Bryan Horskins (Hawthorn) - died 09/03/2023
  5. Allan Hotchkin (SM) - died 25/02/2023
  6. Adam Inglis (Carlton) - died 21/07/2023
  7. Jim Kemp (Fitzroy) - died 23/11/2023
  8. John McCashney (Hawthorn) - died 08/07/2023
  9. John Towner (Essendon) - died 19/01/2023
Plus a couple of discrepancies in death dates
  1. David Browning DOD listed as 09/09/2923 when death notice shows 08/09/2023
  2. Maurie Young DOD listed as 10/12/2023 when death notice & australianfootball.com have 13/12/2023
Also a few errors at australianfootball.com
  1. Death date for Kevin Neale (death notices show 16/09 is correct)
  2. Death date for Rod Horrocks (8/08 rather than 8/07) - cannot find an online source to verify
  3. Death date for Austin Robertson (22/08 rather than 23/08) - cemetery record confirms 22/08 date
Will email Col H with additional info as per request in the guide
I started doing this exact same process a few days ago and was going to complete it and post it this weekend!

Thanks for doing it for me. I'll check my notes and see if I had anything else

Okay, here's a list of everyone who didn't have their deaths listed on Wikipedia as of about an hour ago today. I've only updated Rowe, as he was the first I saw. I have included full names where I can, and sources to articles or obituaries. By association, this means they need to be updated on AF.com. I'm pretty sure AFL Tables is even further back in terms of death updates.
I've updated Blain to Railton. Thanks for the list and links.

That's a pretty amazing oversight about Lew Evans, you'd think somebody would've picked it up over the decades at the AFL.
Yes, it's certainly a strange one! They only found him late last year (for once it wasn't us guys on here doing the finding!!): Resource - List thread - Inaccuracy in official records

I don't know when the 2024 Season Guide was printed, but they may well have had enough time to notify them, and get Lew's name removed from that list.

A sub question to this is who fact checks the Season Guide.
I assume the editor obviously, but who else do they send it to look over it - and do they actually send it chapters to researchers/historians to review. I suspect not

Fair question, for sure! I've sent them lots of corrections over the years, and established a decent connection with the editor (who has recently retired). I'd be quite happy for them to send me something to look over (prior to publishing), and there's a few people on here who'd be well suited to such a job!

Death notice for Michael Caiafa from Jan 2024. It says he played for Fitzroy (looks like it was U19s and Reserves) and then he worked with players and coaches at Richmond, Carlton, West Coast.
I dont know what his connection with Richmond is atm, can't see him as a senior or reserves player.

Thank you.

Bluseum has just told me he was Stasticians Video Assistant at Carlton circa 2003-2004

A former Richmond stastician remmbers he came to Richmond after Carlton to help with coding and timing of videos.

So I think we can close that then. He wasnt a senior player, but Fitx u19s/Res then statistican assistant after that.

Edit: I tracked down his son. (I guess based on all the Caiafa photos on linkedin - one looked like a spitting image of him, and success!). He tells me he was at Fitzroy when it folded in 1996. Then went to Richmond (our annual report shows that as statistican), then at Carlton. Thanks all for your help

Col H has sent me his current spreadsheet of 2023 deaths and there are three additional 2023 deaths (unknown at time of publishing guide)
  1. Les Russell (Fitzroy) died on 1 Jan 2023
  2. Robert Porter (Haw) died on 25 Dec 2023
  3. Ron Stockman (Foots) died on 29 Dec 2023
The first of these was already in wikipedia (unsourced) and I've added the last two deaths to wikipedia with sources.
Oliver G - these three all need to be added to australianfootball.com

Thanks.
In regards to Colliver, does anyone know someone in the EFC Past Players Association? Quite strange that there is no record. Maybe he moved overseas, or changed his name. Or maybe just in a small rural paper or newsletter, not the majors.
I got a reply from Dan Eddy advising that Colliver died on 19 May 2023.

What's the brand on the football

Burley. The below is a similar font, although not identical. It would have evolved over time.

South Freo and East Freo legend and former Dockers #1 ticket holder Steve Marsh passed away at the age of 99.

I remember when he was inducted to the Australian Football HoF in 2006 and I looked at his record, I thought he was stiff not be an inaugural inductee in 1996. I had heard the name before that, but didn't realise how good his record was.

Dave Granger nicknamed Grave Danger is the best one I have heard in footy.

Was an exceptionally talented football who when he lost it, was a dangerous thing to be his opponent. He was asked to be the enforcer and look aafter his teammates by his coach, and somwtimes went way too far.
