Red cards in AFL?

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

You are suggesting tonight's snipe wasn't red card worthy? The ball was long gone & well beyond 5m. For mine that act could we'll set the standard for a red card moving forward.

how far was it? 5m 7ms?

it was less than one second after the release of the handball. definitely reportable but borderline suspension though. He'll probably go given the severity of the impact but a fair bump a bit late probably doesn't warrant 4 weeks which marries the severity. It's definitely borderline and thus definitely not a card.

I would also expect a player looking at where they were running. The concept of "not expecting contact, should still require a player to use common sense and at least look where they were going"

I reckon from the replay the head wasn’t hit ....it was the whiplash from the bump

I’ve alwwys said modern players are like 90kg plus and move at speed .....mass moving at speed hits stationary object = destruction...you get my drift

Gaff, Hall and Bugg in recent times. Jonas marginal.

I'm not familiar with the Bugg one

If Jonas was a leap and then contact with the shoulder I would agree. The second movement in the air and raising the elbow was what disturbed me. I would suggest Jonas would be the benchmark case where anything greater warrants a card.

Agree see my above post

Gaff yes
hall on staker
Solomon
Cameron
Bugg

The umpires didn't see some of them because they happened off the ball and the umps were (naturally) following the play.

I don't like the idea of giving any send-off power to the umps on the ground. They don't (and can't) see everything. But on the other hand I don't like some official sitting up in the stands looking at slow motion replays to make the decision either.

Ok here how it works

Replays are shown inside umpires box .....

Player who is clearly injured is assessed by a doctor ...they can assess the injury pretty quickly .....that doctor talks to umpires in the box

The umpires talk to the umps on the ground ...player is sent off

Even if that takes five minutes ...gaff is sent off

The doctors are employed by the AFL ...NEUTRAL

Just start fining or suspending players for those soft niggling punches, it will soon eliminate them from the game once players realise everything they do on the ground is caught on a camera somewhere. Get them out of that habit and soon enough it will carry through.

Took 3 steps after disposing so the ball was well gone & it wasn't a fair bump, took him high, sorry but you guys are way off on this one.

probably no need for zones if the niggles, holding, punches, scragging and holding the man was actually penalised

FTR

I'm thinking reportable but not a red card

No

King hits are different mentality

My question is this

Is football a team game ......yes it is

When an individual does the wrong why is there no team penalty ....if we penalised teams ..hey they wear the jumper then we will see culture change .....imagine if west coast had to play with one less for the game and maybe

If a player gets 8 weeks ...the team plays with one less the following two weeks ...

Let’s start penalising teams for an individual

That individual PLAYS FOR A TEAM ...it’s a team game last time I looked

Not convinced.

The excuse in this recent case was that it was an attempt to make a punch to the chest, as if a punch to the chest was acceptable. Let's make chest punches unacceptable. After that there will be no accidental hits to the head, or at least no excuse for it.

Wow you must be a great decision maker out in the real world.

You need good umpiring before bringing in new rules for umps to further adjudicate.

Gil is correct on this, but for wrong reasons, so he is still wrong.

that's very military

I can just see it now. The AFL bring in red cards, and then we have to listen to commentators who think they are judge and jury of football debating whether every collision is a red card or not.
It's already happening and we don't even have red cards yet. Even the prospect of red cards has them talking more **** than normal, and they normally talk a lot of it.

After Gaff's hit last week I was swept away in the hysteria and leaning slightly towards it.

After seeing people's overreactions calling for it tonight after a late bump to the shoulder I now am slightly against it again.

Probably just leave it alone I don't trust them to implement it all too well.

Spot on. Last week it seemed a good idea, but you know some idiot umpire will use it for something like this, and then it'll just get used for everything.
