I've been talking about the batting ability of Bailey for a while now, but he isn't going to come in and play as an all rounder straight away. He needs to come in as a bowler and score runs, like Johnson for Australia. And then a move up the order would be on the cards.

With us playing three #11's (Tait, George, Haberfield), having Bailey any higher than 8 would be a pretty long tail for me.

No doubting Bailey has the ability to bat at 6 or 7, but that's not going to happen first up. Plus, there is no point putting any extra pressure on him by playing him up the order. When he does get a game, his focus should be solely on taking wickets.

Bailey batted number 3 when he made his tons in England for Grinstead. He has come in up the order for Sturt but there is a problem when he doesn't get a game. Great Article by Jesper in the Mail today. Rather unfortunate but Shane Warne was just expressing similar views to those I have been saying for years. I am afraid our SA selectors have stuffed up...

The squad for the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria on Friday has been named...

Manou, Graham (c)
Bailey, Cullen
Christian, Dan
Cooper, Tom
Cosgrove, Mark
George, Peter
Haberfield, Jake
Harris, Daniel
Klinger, Michael
O’Brien, Aaron
Smith, James
Wise, Allan

In: Wise
Out: Cleary, Duval

Some good news for those who have been calling for Cullen Bailey to get a game, with it looking fairly certain that he will play. The final spot should be out of Wise and Haberfield, and it would have to go to Haberfield. There doesn't look to be a heap of fast bowling depth, but it in the second innings against Tasmania it was just George, Christian and Cosgrove anyway.

Harris
Smith
Cooper (needs to be in the top 3)
Klinger
Cosgrove
Manou
O'Brien
Bailey (don't put extra pressure on him by batting him too high)
Christian
Haberfield
George

Here are some quotes from Sorell in regards to Bailey. As much as people like to see young spinners getting a game, the fact is that the Adelaide Oval doesn't usually spin early in the season. It's always easy selecting on hindsight, but it would have been a bigger gamble playing Bailey than not.

The Adelaide Oval pitch is not known for prestigious spin before Christmas but with the slow bowlers claiming nine of 31 wickets (including four to all-rounder Aaron O'Brien) in the opening Shield game at the ground, Bailey has come into calculations.

Redbacks coach Mark Sorell said the turn seen in that match against Tasmania could work in the leg-spinner's favour this time around.

"With it (the pitch) being under the covers for as long as it was, we didn't expect it to be like that but it gripped and turned quite nicely," Sorell said.

"He (Bailey) picked up some wickets in the Futures game not that long ago. He feels like they are coming out well, feels confident so that's important, so like I said we'll make sure we get the right balance come game day."

Graham Manou has been called up to the Australian squad for the injured Tim Paine, and will be leaving as soon as possible.

Excellent news for Manou, and he thoroughly deserves the call up. But it will result in a couple of big changes for the Redbacks tomorrow.

Judging by the Futures Cup, it would seem as though Tim Ludeman is the back up wicket keeper in the squad (22 year old keeper/batsman from Victoria). So one would hazard a guess that Ludeman will be his replacement.

The captaincy might be a bit harder, because I don't think there any obvious stand outs. Harris would be the front runner, with Klinger and Cooper the outsiders.

Its about time Bails is in team to be honest & agreed Harris would be the only one who could be captain IMHO

as much as its awkward for the redbacks, Im wrapt to see Greame back in Aussie colours - I pondered what would of happed if he was a consistant batsman when Gilly retiried instead of just in the last 2 years....

Congrats to Tim Ludeman:thumbsu::) Outstanding Lad, fantastic keeper and very good bat. Great move heading to SA and getting a crack at 1st Class Cricket straight up.

Good Luck

All out for 292 in the first innings. With Cosgrove and Ludeman scoring 53 and 62 respectively.

Good to see Cossie getting a 50, but he really needed to go on with it and get a big one. Also great to see Ludeman start off with a 60. Came in when we staring down the barrel of a sub-200 score, but kept the score ticking over at a nice rate.

Looks like we've found a player in Ludeman. :thumbsu:

Once again, insipid top 6 batting by SA with all 6 batsmen either missing out completely or not capitalising on good starts in a good batting deck. I've been on about it for years, these players are making 100s against average attacks in SACA Grade cricket. We need far less teams enabling batsmen to face more concentrated attacks so the step up to 1st class isn't so great.

50 is about as many as you can expect from Cosgrove. He's never going to work hard for runs, and his fitness won't allow him to spend long periods of time at the crease. Real talent, but close to a waste of space in the longer form of the game.

As for their treatment of Bailey, it's just pathetic the moment they see a pitch with the slightest tinge of green, they just leave him out of the team. How the hell is he supposed to develop knowing he is always teetering on the edge of selection?

He finally makes the side last year, takes 8 wickets in the final game, then takes 11 wickets in a 2nd XI match, and doesn't make the team for the first match in 2009-10. What a load of crap, and the selectors should hang their heads in shame. When he does play, it's a case of bowl the average medium quicks until the batsmen are settled, then bring Bailey on for a few. If he gets touched up, take him straight off so a medium quick can get touched up.

If he takes 5 wickets, and the next game is in Perth, then drop him again. He'll never have the chance to push for Australian selection unless the Redbacks selectors are prepared to make him a permanent fixture, and also use him as a attacking weapon.

Sorry, but we just have no idea what we're doing in SA when it comes to cricket.

In trying to follow Tim Ludeman move to SA I was very suprised to see the early scheduling of your Grade comp and the fact that you go straight into 2 Day matches. The Darlington Kindergarten 2nd XI have had more opportunities than some of your state players. I know State Teams train all the time, but there can be no better guide that actually doing the business in the middle. I think you are right in saying that the Grade comp needs to play a bigger role in helping to strengthen the Shield team. Having said that both Sydney and Melbourne have 18 sides in their grade comps and it doesn't seem to hinder their player development.

Not sure what the answer is but I think you are in for a long summer.

You underestimate Cullen Bailey's batting (as do the selectors!). His stint in England in the off season saw him making a few big hundreds, even though it was in a lower grade than County cricket. He has developed into a more than handy batsman and can now be classed as a genuine all rounder. Unfortunately the selectors see O'Brien as this "all rounder" even though his bowling lacks that genuine spinning ability to take wickets on the last day. Four years ago SA had the chance to play Bailey and Cullen together and develop over the years. We did not see that because the batting was fragile and the selectors were not prepared to take a chance with spinners. So we have had little development and will still take the wooden spoon...Am I frustrated??? YES!!!!!!!
I write this at TEA on the final day and Cullen Bailey is 89 not out....Are my comments that I have been writing for the past 3 years vindicated?? YES,,,, I wrote years ago that he would be a future captain. I still believe that but maybe the selectors need to show some faith. On a vet flat pitch in the first dig he at least got 3 wickets to be opur leading wicket taker but was still underbowled in my opinion..(and listening to Dizzy he thought so too....why give him the ball when batsmen are on a hundred or more...give him a go while they are fresh)
Sp well done Cullen Bailey...you showed a few doubters today.....

I don't think anyone has ever doubted his potential, both with the bat and ball. A lot of posters, you and me included, have been talking up his all-round potential. But Bailey had only really shown what he could do with the bat in grade cricket and over in England.

So it's nice to see him taking his chance coming in as the night watchmen today, because he hadn't really shown what he could do with the bat for the Redbacks. Now that he has, hopefully he will be given more of a chance and will be able to play in the top 7, even on pitches which aren't spin friendly.

He is still the best spin option Australia has in my opinion, and hopefully he will be in the frame for selection come the end of the 2009/2010 season.
