The thing I find interesting is that none of the highlights you see of this kid are him doing anything on the inside, yet he's supposed to be an inside mid? I get that he didn't play the position much, but surely there's got to be some highlights of him doing something in traffic.
Yeah only played a couple games in the middle last season. But surely they could have found footage lol

Im not sure its still there but last year there was app where you could search any player and there were edits from just about every single game they played in. One day i just watched them all so maybe see if you can find it. NAB draft app or something. The thing that strikes me regarding an inside game is his physicality in the contest. Often cracks in harder than anyone so the defensive side of his inside game is good. I also remember coming away thinking he looked one-paced but recent testing has blown that away i guess.

Ive got the app, and I know what you mean. But the highlights from last year are no longer there. I guess when they reset for a new season, they erase them.

Yes, it does seem likely that Reef won't play much, if at all, in 2021, mainly due to his current poor fitness. That is just basic common sense, you can argue that's "being negative" if you want, but it's an incredibly stupid argument.

I've been more positive than most in judging Reef's potential, but like always you don't like the facts getting in the way of a good story.

Endurance fitness should be something he can easily built over summer to at least have a decent base by round 1. And from there if he shows VFL form he should be in the mix for senior selection early or in the middle of the season. Nobody is expecting him to be a starting midfielder who has to run all day.

Maynard ( who is considered the benchmark for recruits who seemingly lacked a tank) played nine games in his debut season after breaking into the team in round 14 at age 18 years 10 months. He’s barely missed a game since and to my recollection has never been dropped.

Most people would argue getting an AFL standard fitness takes multiple preseason for most kids, excluding the fitness freaks.

He's also coming off a back stress fracture so I doubt they'll push him too hard this year. The last thing we want is him run into the ground and having a Hotspot in his back flare up

That’s why I used Maynard as an example.

Was unaware of the back injury however and that may be a valid point.

As a general rule Collingwood have been too conservative giving first year players games. Maybe that needs to change.

I agree to an extent, but nearly all of the kids who have impacts early are top 10 picks and we haven't had that many, and when we do get them they are injured in their 1st year (Moore/Freeman did a nasty hammy and Scharenberg foot). Then you have the other problem which is giving away 4 first round picks for Beams and Treloar.

We still got Quaynor in that four year period with pick 13 and he only managed four games in his first season....and none in the first 15 rounds.

Admittedly he got injured in round 19 so who knows if he would have played many more

Surely you must admit it was strange neither Rantall or Bianco got a game when we barely had enough fit blokes to form a 22 in the football frenzy periods.
No. I don't believe that throwing kids into the AFL early is necessarily the best for their development. If they are thrown in too early, I think it can be harmful. Basically, play them year one if you think they are good enough or competitive enough that you think it will benefit them. Otherwise give them time to develop at a lower level.

Who would have been a better player if they played more games early?

How do you know unless you play them but off the top of my head

Rantall Bianco T brown Murphy Sier

Ruscoe Keane and Atu got bugger all chances to prove themselves last season

Kelly unlucky with injury.

Quaynor Noble and Cal Brown the only younger players given lengthy opportunities to settle in

Hopefully with dead wood traded out and youth drafted in the attitudes to selection can change. We haven’t got the balance right.

first round, and where prospects are likely to go.

Looks like we have decided he is worth matching.

16. Reef MCINNES

Clubs:
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 193cm/86kg

Bio: The Collingwood Next Generation Academy prospect broke the record in the 20m sprint, recording a time of 2.78s. However, it won’t officially count due to the large wind behind Victorian players at the combine. The Charger can play anywhere on the ground but looms as a midfielder down the track. He does need to improve his endurance, but his tank is sure to grow after a few pre-seasons at the next level. He is one of the better stoppage midfielders and is willing to back himself to step around opponents and get the ball moving forward.

Where will he end up? Collingwood are set to match a bid on McInnes somewhere in the first round, but Derek Hine and Ned Guy might need to be creative to move some of their selections given they currently hold Pick 14 and 16. Adelaide (9) and GWS (10, 13 and 15) appear to be two clubs thinking about bidding.

That is Going by Reports

my take/summary from what I’ve been reading

1. The Bombers probably won’t bid Reef early and if they do we should be tempted to pass. Trying to trade up to get ahead of them would be too expensive.
2. Crows might bid on Reef. Do we offer them 14 and next years first rounder to get pick 9 and also knock gws out of bidding? Is that too expensive? What deal would work?
3. If we do a deal with gws to knock them out... that still leaves the Crows live? What deal would work? 14 and a future second round for their earliest bid?
4. What are the odds nobody bids of Reef. In which case we don’t need to trade and can pick up 14 and 16 with live trades? Does the club have the nerve? Is Reef worth the risk? How far does 16 drop if he’s bid early and we have to match?

Twomey has us not matching a bid which i find very hard to believe.
If he goes before our two picks in the teens - there's got to be a chance we let him go. If he gets a bid at 9 and there's 8 blokes left we rate ahead of him, we'd have to pass if we hadn't previously done a pick swap.
