Not sure why he couldn't have feigned some hamstring tightness or some such and avoided the combine testing.

Because if someone better suddenly becomes available, Pies would jump on it .. Players have to perform at the combine. Nothing is guaranteed

Nah, I think he'd be pretty confident of finding his way to the Pies with or without the recent combine testing.

A lot of clubs took a lot more notice from his combine performance.

Prior to a week or two ago... he was projected at 15-25 and not many people talking about him, now we have everyone lol

I'm assuming thats got to do with his speed.

It doesn’t really work that way. A clubs big board won’t have changed much over the past month. What’s changing is the availability of information as they say loose lips sink ships. Think of it like the US election where Trump had these “big leads” only for Biden to “catch up” once the mail in votes were counted. The reality was that Biden was already in front and it was the counting that caught up.

What would be changing is a clubs draft night strategy. In our case we might have Coleman at 4 on our draft board and the idea of trading up to one of Essendon’s picks is about getting access to him rather than ahead of a Reef bid. You’d probably be like “why would we move up just to bid on Coleman when he’s rated post 20?” and the answer is that we’ve always rated him at 4 and the media never caught on to it.

Reef down at Brighton Beach today along with JUH and 2 other draftees. Looks like he has signed with Connor Sports.

Nathan who?

PICK 16: COLLINGWOOD – REEF MCINNES (BID MATCHED)

Clubs:
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

Position: Midfielder

Size: 193cm/86kg

Bio: The Collingwood Next Generation Academy prospect broke the record in the 20m sprint, recording a time of 2.78s. However, it won’t officially count due to the large wind behind Victorian players at the combine. The Charger can play anywhere on the ground but looms as a midfielder down the track. He does need to improve his endurance, but his tank is sure to grow after a few pre-seasons at the next level. He is one of the better stoppage midfielders and is willing to back himself to step around opponents and get the ball moving forward.

In the mix: Collingwood might have to match an earlier bid for McInnes given Adelaide and Essendon’s links to the midfielder. The Pies could get lucky though, with talk in the last 24 hours suggesting a bid may come near the 20s.

my take/summary from what I’ve been reading

1. The Bombers probably won’t bid Reef early and if they do we should be tempted to pass. Trying to trade up to get ahead of them would be too expensive.
2. Crows might bid on Reef. Do we offer them 14 and next years first rounder to get pick 9 and also knock gws out of bidding? Is that too expensive? What deal would work?
3. If we do a deal with gws to knock them out... that still leaves the Crows live? What deal would work? 14 and a future second round for their earliest bid?
4. What are the odds nobody bids of Reef. In which case we don’t need to trade and can pick up 14 and 16 with live trades? Does the club have the nerve? Is Reef worth the risk? How far does 16 drop if he’s bid early and we have to match?

Why would you pass on him if a bid came early?

Our picks will likely be 18 and 20, so its not whether we rate him best at pick 8 but at pick 18.

Which from all reports is a comfortable draft range for him.

What is the point of having picks 14 and 16 if they become picks 18 and 20?!

There is an obvious senario where we don't match. Early bid and Hine has Reef a fair bit further down his list. In that setting it would be mad to give up 14-17 and maybe push back 16-19 to get a kid who Hine rates as inferior to a range of kids we could pick up with our 14-17 bid. All depends on where Derek has Reef pegged.

Ideally Hine sees him as worth 9 but no one bids til after 16-19, happy days. The opposite and we pass.

Pick 18. Reef sits comfortably in that draft range.

We dont het the pick 8 or 10 to actually use. People talk as if we get that pick to use not that Reef just get selected there and we use points...

I wasn’t expressing an opinion.... just attempting to summarise general consensus.

Brighton beach is very rocky in parts. You need to be careful where you step in the shallows... or risk cutting your foot on the reef.

I’ll go now......

We'd probably have to rate him a fair bit inside 18 to match the bid with our first pick, as it's very unlikely that the first 18 kids taken will match with our first 18 wish list. If Essendon bid on him, you'd probably only need 4 blokes left on your list who you rate higher to be pretty confident that one of them gets to our pick. It really just comes down to how we rate him.

Yeah i dont think it does need to be that far off 18, from our clubs pespective they would have a much better knowledge of Reef then other draftees and investment into him.

If we rate a kid at 16 or 17 but reefs there with them at 18 they will go the more known propsect that they developed and built a relationship with.

Maybe if at pick 18 they had someone they rate top 5 and Reef only sits 15 on their board but doubt that scenario is a likely one.

Not just the speed he ran but physically looking at him he looks bloody good standing next to JUH there really is very little difference in both height and size
I have never seen him play so wouldnt be a good judge as you guys but presuming he can otherwise wouldnt be rated to 20.

What im seeing in 2 years is a 195cm 97/98kgs player that has elite speed and agility that can play footy and is of good character
#12-#15 range looks his value specially in a draft like 2020 with no exposed form but would have thought if there was he would have been higher in the rankings.

Poor bloke could well have tanked the time trial and now it's a genuine concern from some posters whether he'll ever be fit enough to play midfield.

Even though he probably didn't (tank it) I think we've just seen the reason why NGA/FS prospects should never tank these things.

He'll have this rep for his entire career...

Unless he comes out next week and beats Rantall 😂😂😂
