The rules have changed haven't they? IIRC academy players can be picked by any team with pick 1-15 or so?

Perhaps a tad harsh to say they have cheated - just got lucky in the academy lottery and played by the rules given to them at the time. Given a similar situation, we would have expected our own club to have done the same.

The situation that led to a top 3 prospect like Ugle-Hagan being paid for with a host of lower picks (29, 33, 41, 42, 52, 54) through the academy system won't be able to happen again under the change that bids in the first round cannot be matched from this years' draft onwards - but the damage is already done.


The other unmentionable area is of course father/son prospects, which remain untouched from the changes to academies.

This year we may see Nick Daicos and Sam Darcy as the first two selections, paid for with lesser picks that don't equate to their worth.

Father/son has been kind to the Bulldogs; Darcy will become the sixth current player on their list from that source, joining Wallis, Hunter, Liberatore, West and Cordy.

• From 2022 no bids can be matched on the top 40 selections.

nah its the whole 1st rd picks 1-18 that can`t be matched for Academy players ..
