Not if they deserve it. The problem is, the best candidates are only club presidents and board members at best. If a woman gets picked from the list of candidates available then it was 100% an decision based on optics
You may find this surprising but plenty of women are board members and there's a couple of female presidents. I can guarantee you that even if they are the best candidate for the role, they'll still be pegged as getting the role simply due to 'optics'.

Plenty of male board-members/presidents/senior footy people aren't fit for the role either.

What on earth...

External genitalia and statistically larger bodies means men have more blood than women. More blood means more oxygen can be carried to the brain during the decision-making process. It might actually even be dangerous for a woman to be in charge if her lower level of blood (plus all that blood lost to menstruation) causes her to make the wrong decision. People's lives are at stake.

Something wrong with having a woman in charge?

People piss and moan about Jackson/Demetriou/McLachlan being rubbish, so it seems apparent that the blokes in charge for the past 30-odd years don't have many fans.

Stop being sexist.
Nothing wrong with the best person being female...
providing it is genuinely the best person, not 'quota'ed' or 'positive discrimination' or 'it's time'.

The biggest problem at the moment is that there is a very strong numbers imbalance between suitably qualified male and females for a job like this. That makes it far more likely that the best candidate will be male, which just continues the numbers imbalance.

There are not a lot of senior/large scale sports bodies run by women. Perhaps if the AFL wants to look outside of sports to banking, business or politics the options expand.

Sure, we all want the best person.

If that person just happens to be female though, I can guarantee you that people won't believe she got the job on her own merit.

Yeah look.

I see another sexist comment you can have a day off or worse.

Best person for the job is the best person for the job.

Pull ya heads in.

If its a man it's the boys club at it again and if it's a woman, she just got the role because the league is all about political correctness, so clearly the only choice is to appoint someone non binary.

Damn straight Biggie, once your girls have finished carving up AFLW I fully expect one of them to take up the CEO position at the AFL.(If they wanna)And we'd all be better for it.

Are any board only members fit for the role? I'd want someone with executive experience with AFL (eg CEO or executive position at AFL house). CEO is a hands on role, not just governance/strategy like board level.

I read somewhere their periods attract bears. Bears can smell the menstruation.
Well, that's just great. You hear that, Trucko ?Bears. Now you're putting the whole league in jeopardy.

I reckon Brendon Gale would be an excellent appointment.

He brings an aspect that has been lacking from much of the AFL’s previous CEO in that Gale brings a perspective from the Clubs.

There is enough experience on the Board to cover all the Corporate Governance.

Brian Cook would have been an ideal appointment a few years back, so in the here and now I would be pleased with Gale if he was to wins the gig.

I agree Monocle, Gale would be a very good appointment. He worked as a lawyer after finishing his playing days before becoming the Richmond CEO in 2009, turning them from a long-time struggling side with debts of around $6 million into one of the competition's strongest clubs that has a very good balance sheet.

I feel he is the best fit for the position and I would hope the AFL avoid putting one of their own in charge. Remains to be seen what happens though.

There are plenty of blokes in the football world who'd rather moan about a man doing a shit job as the AFL CEO than see a women do a decent job.

Might be hazy memories but didn't Gil get off to a pretty good start with a few fan based initiatives in 2014 ?

It all fell to shit pretty quickly, especially once it came to light the role he played in trying to hush hush Essendon 2012.
Those initiatives never extended beyond Victoria, which set the tone for his tenure. And the fact that he could get the MCG to do those initiatives shows how unhealthily close their relationship with the AFL is.
