I think it doesn’t do anyone any good to speculate so let’s all park it for now (feel free to still tee off on Zorko being a grub) and hopefully some clarification comes out.

Just came back from the game at the Gabba.

Things that stuck out watching at the ground:

• The Gabba was far from full capacity (granted there was the Broncos game on across the river playing at the same time, but this was effectively an early final).
• Brisbane have a serious lack of leadership once the opposition gets some momentum going - plenty of fake tough-guy stuff and chirp going on but absolutely nothing in terms of inspiration to rally the team.
• H.Andrews needs to go book in with an optometrist - has completely lost his ability to read the ball in the air, which is his whole game as he is slow in covering ground and is useless at ground level.
• The Lions defence seemed to be organised around creating offence rather than actually defending, with results as you would expect. The defensive group zoned off far too much, and too many times instead of attacking the ball they shirked engaging body contact entirely. Without M.Adams the Brisbane defence tonight did not look anything like that of a finals team, lest top 4 team.
• Fagan got Simpson's notes on how to structure a non-functional forward line; going in too tall and keeping the ground-level forwards deep near goals, which allowed Melbourne to rebound out of the defensive half without any pressure.
• L.Jackson is worth what the rumours are suggesting Fremantle are going to give up in order to get him.
• C.Oliver is easily the most under-rated player in the competition.

Brisbane tonight looked not too dissimilar to how West Coast played up here against the Suns at Carrara: trying to crowd the contest but getting beaten once the ball moves outside the 5 metre zone from the stoppage; trying to create offence from defence but getting punished on turnover.


The BIG difference however was running. Melbourne covers ground. Lots of it, both offensively and defensively, at high speed. And continues to do it throughout the entire match.

Lions just couldn't keep up with their opponents whenever the Demons streamed forwards, and conversely when Brisbane had possession Melbourne had already run back to set up defensively before the opportunity to exploit isolated match-ups could be taken.


It only further underscored to me just how poor the conditioning of West Coast really is.

We are in a period where football is basically flooding on steroids, and the clubs having the most success are generally those that are able to move players from one end to the other more effectively than their opponents.

In a competition where fitness is becoming increasingly important, it is little wonder that the Eagles are at the foot of the ladder with their level of conditioning.

There’s growing sentiment on our board that Zorko should retire, except the club announced midweek that he’s signed a one year extension.

Fans are tired of Fagan’s press conferences. Especially him quoting stats that we won. It’s at the point now where fans can write Fagan’s press conference, before he gets out there, and be 99% accurate.

When was the last time there was a potential fallout this big from a H&A game

Brisbane lose out on a Top 4 position, and a potential first week finals exit on current form
Brisbane will probably change their captain, and Zorko will probably cop some sort of suspension if what he is supposed to have said is true.

That's brilliant. I used to do the social media for my club back in my playing days and I don't think I ever missed getting the senior's score up after the match even if I was absolutely langered and we'd be done by 50+. I obviously wasn't getting paid either and from memory, we only had about 300 followers at the time.

Well off topic at this stage.. but Kevin Sheedy said, coupla days before Clarkson's announcement he'd be coaching North, that Essendon wouldn't be a good fit, North would be....to take them to Tassie in the future.
AFL ambassador incoming, perhaps.
Unsure, but not surprised at all if it eventuates.

I'm no supporter of Liverpool but they have been champions of Europe 5 times and Everton are doing their best to get relegated. Not really sure it's an apt comparison.
