Relocation within Melbourne?

Given how many clubs there are, there wouldn't be that many with an outright majority in council areas. Essendon in the northwest probably, Collingwood in the northeast, Carlton in Darebin, Hawthorn in Whitehorse, maybe Bulldogs in Maribyrnong, few others. St Kilda would probably have a plurality in Bayside and Kingston even if they don't have a majority.

Which is a big reason why there has never been a council or state government push for a suburban stadium. It would invariably be for a club that most residents couldn't give a shit about. Many of which would be quite hostile to the idea.
If you're going to spend $200 million there are a hundred things most councils would prefer to do.

Very bad news for north Melbourne just reported in the herald sun the Tasmanian government have stated if no games get played in Tassie which is looking likely they won’t receive any of the 4million sponsorship arrangement hawthorn will still receive some of there due to the jumper sponsorship a huge blow for north!

Should never have sold off Waverley, it was a purpose built stadium which is now ideally located for the South-Eastern corridor.

Could see it happening once the Suburban loop is done. Most of the Hawthorn fans live out east, Saints fans South East, Bulldogs fans in the west etc.
I think this would be the go. A smaller stadium similar to Geelong's for usually low drawing games v interstate sides. Couple of problems though. The main club you'd want involved is Hawthorn as just a few games from the Saints and Demons is not enough. And they do have a large amount of support in or near the area (and a lot who to this day are still shitty they lost Waverly). But they are tied to Tasmania now which is financially very good and sound for them.

If Melbourne Racing Club sell off Sandown racecourse, that could be an opportunity to build a new ground in the east close to a train station. A stadium would probably only need a quarter of the land and the rest could go towards housing. Would Hawthorn and St Kilda consider playing games there?

Fair few assumptions there. If the Docklands deal remains terrible I'm sure some clubs will look at other options.
I would have thought it is pretty well placed for a future ground shared by those two clubs.
Ideally there will be moves to build a 20K rectangular stadium there for a soccer team and then late game it ends up being an 35K oval
If a Melbourne based club was looking at Geelong and what it offered with a fan base / stadium deal and wanted similar they would be better off angling for a number of games in Ballarat where they could carve out their own niche without committing to the cost of a new build stadium.

North playing four games a year there could be a good move if the Tas govt closed their wallet. North’s only there for the cash, and the general Hobart public have been practicing being socially distant with North way before Covid came along.
Bulldogs playing in Ballarat makes sense too, but they’ve got their market in the western suburbs carved out nicely so don’t need it as bad.

North got screwed by Ballarat once already, why would they go back? And why would Ballarat kick out the Bulldogs for North?
It's been discussed here before, North should try for Albury-Wodonga. They used to recruit from that area and might have some fans there still from that era.
Damn - you beat me to it! The Ovens & Murray League was indeed North's country zone where they got many good players. Having once lived there for a couple of years quite some years back, I can attest it's probably the one and only area anywhere outside the small suburb of North Melbourne itself where the Roos have a reasonable support.
In addition, games in Albury/Wodonga candy also attract fans from places like Wagga, Wangaratta, Shepparton, Benalla etc.

Be interesting to see the legal argument given it was the Tasmanian government that blocked the AFL for playing a hub in Tassie.

Of course you wouldn’t.
But we’d be talking about a club that has few genuine growth options in Melbourne, which is over-populated with AFL clubs.
They may look to explore a generational move to an area which is more like Geelong than it is Melbourne. And which has a football-mad population in the millions. And which doesn’t have a club playing anywhere near it.
Their target for fans would be no closer to Melbourne to Dandenong, at a stretch. But it’d spread east to Pakenham, and south down the Peninsula.
Is there somewhere to play 2-3 games and get 10k - 15k people? If that works, expand it.

Bulldogs are very proud of the fact, and have called it at their AGMs, that they have the most supporters in each of the 5 local council areas in the western region of Melbourne - Maribrynong, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and Melton Shire. This was supported by official polling.
