As raised by Kochie today and The Australian, if it is being considered under a new tv rights deal to remove all Freo, WC, Port and Ade games form FTA then that is an absolute disgrace and the league should be ashamed.

If this doesn’t demonstrate where the leagues priorities lie and that “interstate” clubs are purely secondary, nothing will.

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch says South Australian and West Australian fans will be furious if they are forced to pay to watch their team amid reports of a shock new TV rights deal.

Under the proposal, according to The Australian, matches involving the Power, Adelaide, West Coast and Fremantle might only be available on pay TV, instead of the current arrangement which sees games broadcast on Channel 7 in those states.”

It brings them in line with the Vic clubs.. which sucks. How often do North fans get to see their game on TV?

Its one thing to not show the team playing at home (push fans to go to the game) but the away game.... keep it as it is.

Its not proposed to remove them all at all. Its proposed that they are held to the same terms as the Victorian clubs - some will be on FTA, some will be Fox exclusive, but will Fox will settle for delayed casts, while Seven will feel it devalues their product.

This has been coming for years.

Remember that national comp thing that non victorians like to bring up all the time? This is part of it.

They won't all be removed from FTA. Probably something like 4-6 games per season will be exclusive to Foxtel/Kayo which is a lot better deal than Victorian clubs get.

Under this proposed agreement, it is being suggested that any home games in WA or SA will no longer be covered on FTA broadcast throughout the entire season.

The only televised games including those 4 teams will be the ones hosted by other teams (meaning only the Vic clubs home games or the NSW/Qld clubs) which include those 4 other clubs.

Disgraceful suggestion

That's Channel 7 hysteria. The AFL won't sign off on that deal. Most games including Showdowns, Derbies etc will still be live on FTA. The key difference is that SOME games will be exclusive to pay tv/streaming.

'The AFL is trying to entice Seven West Media and Foxtel to up their bids for television rights to as close to $600m annually as possible, in an effort to keep the incumbent broadcasters in place until at least 2029 and as ViacomCBS-owned Network Ten considers a potential knockout bid for all free-to-air and streaming rights to the code.

Seven and Foxtel have indicated they are keen to maintain their rights, and discussions have begun regarding what mechanisms could be used to entice either party to raise their bids.'

'One option for Foxtel, who would pay more for the rights, is its Kayo Freebies service that allows for the streaming of select events without a charge. But Seven is being steadfast in its discussions with the AFL that it must maintain the strong-rating Adelaide and Perth games.'

'Foxtel is also keen to cement Saturday as its showpiece day for showing AFL games on an exclusive basis, similar to its “Super Saturday” collection of NRL games each weekend.'

'The AFL has been keen to use Ten’s interest to push up the price Seven and Foxtel would possibly pay to maintain the rights. The league is keen to clinch a deal within weeks, with talks set to gather pace after Mr McLachlan returns from a short break.'

Gils ego is driving this attempt to put an agreement in place with more than 2 seasons to go before the end of the current agreement.

Yes they will, because it will absolutely get Fox paying them more money.
'Nine Entertainment has proposed a bid for a package of Thursday night games to the AFL, though the league is believed not to be keen to split its hosting options across more than two broadcasters unless it receives bids that are too lucrative to turn down.

With Foxtel and Seven looming as the most likely option though, it means Mr McLachlan has failed so far to generate significant interest from international media companies such as Amazon Prime, Netflix and YouTube, despite initial discussions and meetings.'

Having some games exclusive to pay tv or streaming services is fine.

The suggestion however that every game involving the 4 clubs from WA and SA to only be available via paid subscription services In those two states is just insane.

Fair enough away games may not always be on FTA in those states however imagine for example this weeks game, Port V Cats at Adelaide Oval (not that it would be entertaining viewing anyway) not being available on FTA in SA? Unbelievable suggestion even if it’s just spitballing

At the cost of Seven paying less. Im not sure this solves the money problem for the league.
We're not talking about games that are broadcast into the Melbourne and Sydney markets. These games are only on FTA in Perth and Adelaide.

And they're games that get shunted off the main channel mid quarter because they're run past 6pm and its time to put the news on. Its hardly going to impact what Seven pays at all.

You've got this backwards. It should be fair enough home games not being on FTA in SA, because the option of going to Adelaide/Optus Oval is there. Away games should be on FTA. Those are the matches that are utterly impractical to watch, unlike in Melbourne where you can still go and watch your side through most of their away games.

I don’t have a problem with home games being on delayed telecast to incentivise people to attend, however they still need to be available on FTA.

Majority of the fans depending on a whole range of reasons wont be in a position to attend games however that shouldn’t prevent them from being able to still watch them on FTA.

Any deal like the proposed would lose more fans than any added funds from streaming services will gain and result in a net loss.

I wish 7, 9 and 10 split the 9 games between the 3 of them. Every game on FTA on some channel. Fox can have them all with an option for their own commentary and no ads.

An average round looking like:
Friday Night - 7
Sat Arvo 1 - 9
Sat Arvo 2 - 10
Sat Twilight - 7
Sat Night 1 - 9
Sat Night 2 - 10
Sun Arvo 1 - 9
Sun Arvo 2 - 10
Sun Twilight - 7

Seven are spending a lot of time & money on better measuring how wide the audience of their telecast is, beyond the traditional ratings.

I'm not sure 7 want to meet Gils timeframe on the next contract unless it suits them financially.

Would this effect the integrity of the draw, if the clubs are missing from the fta deal surely they're less likely to get the prime spots?
It just means they're in the same FTA pool as the other clubs. It doesn't mean they're not going to be seen on FTA again, it just suggests there's a chance they will lose out on having every single game aired on FTA.

No Victorian club gets a deal that good.

That wouldn't be profitable for the networks. You're never going to see an AFL game on 7 competing against another AFL game on 9 at the same time as it cannibalises the audience.
