Faith in a long-term process that won't necessarily be pretty in the immediate moment is a necessary part of following a side that's working to build from such a low base. But no level of hope for the future should blind anyone to how ugly the present is and whether any of it actually augurs well for a few years' time - and nothing we saw tonight is indicative of a side currently heading in the right direction. The strategy on-field might be completely different, but the half-hearted efforts from some and the overt frustration at teammates evident from others is the same kind of categorical, undeniable rapid falling-apart that we saw last season which resulted in Noble's tenure quickly becoming obviously terminal.

So, why is that happening again? Any new game plan has teething problems, and any rebuilding side carries a host of mediocre players, but you can usually see, even in the bleaker losses, at least a glimmer of what's taking shape. Three weeks in a row we've disintegrated, soullessly, with no semblance of either an executable plan of our own or a means to stop or even slow the opposition onslaught. Melbourne players were literally quickly glancing for options, then taking a little longer because we were so timid with our 'pressure' tonight. A club that once proudly boasted competitiveness against the odds, reduced to yet another instance of meekly crouching to occupy the 'irrelevant' lower reaches everyone else is comfortable with us lingering in: any wonder half the supporters are shrugging and wondering what the point is anymore?

Get rid of the BS notion that "it will turn" - two years on from Ben Buckley's limp post-loss letter and all I can think is maybe this club could stop gawking in reverence at the circle of life and someone could actually get up and go turn it. What does that look like in practice? Evidently, something has gone very wrong the last few weeks that wasn't going wrong like that before, so whether that's about personnel or some sort of strategic shift, we should expect to see active steps taken to fix that. It's not as simple as "play the kids" - that's just as much a hollow leap of faith as any other mantra - but some kind of accountability for repeated poor performances is necessary and, with a relatively shallow injury list (even after the unpleasant circumstances tonight), there are plenty, of all ages, who could be given a chance to clear the relatively low bar their 'senior' teammates have set.

None of us have the answers. Platitudes and fickle fantasies of future glories don't make getting belted by 90 points and losing 5 in every 6 games this decade suck any less. But having even the lowest of expectations go unmet so often is what really crushes...

I feel like I'd rather get spanked if we had a few more kids running around, rather than some has beens (not going to bother naming them)
Five players under 23 tonight and one of those was Bailey Scott who’s played more than 60 games. Continuing with this make up has reached its use by date.

Some of these guys in the twos who we suspect might still have something to offer need to be given a chance to show that at the very least they can show some more desire than the current lot.

Add that to Wardlaw, Drury and Bergman. It can’t be any worse.

When you can't run with your opponents, i would suggest it means one of two things. Either you're not fit enough or you're not applying yourself enough.

When this is consistently happening one minute into the game, it's not hard to work out which one of the two it is.

Tonight should have been one of those Shinboner Spirit games with our backs against the wall after two really poor performances. I get the feeling Clarko wants to tap into this but it's pretty clear that too many of our players either feel no connection to it or just don't give a sh1t.

I was expecting a belting tonight and that's what we got so it didn't bother me all that much. Loved Sheezel's game... just wish we had another half a dozen players like him.

We have more potatoes than a potato salad. It is depressing seeing Sheezel look so good, it just reminds us how horrible almost everyone else is playing.
There is a simple reason why Sheezel is better than 95% of the list after 7 games and that is because he is a proactive footballer, while most of the other clowns are reactive. People call it footy IQ, but in simple terms he doesn’t wait to see what is going to happen, he makes a decision and goes.

At the speed of the AFL if you are waiting to see what happens then you are already cooked.

it's the "great man theory" of football.

If things continue like this how many delistings will we make at a minimum 6 or 7?
That was going to be the minimum, anyway.

If we draft our first rounders plus 2 other players thats 4. Then we have Brayden George joining the main list. Then a MSD player. And hopefully 1-2 additions in trade week.

Thats 7-8 players out. I would be thinking closer to 10.

Best part of tonight was meeting some big footy royalty after the game at Maccas. Head says we are years away, heart says give clarko a year to sort it out.
