It usually takes 5 years to assess a draft but I don't think anyone will argue that 2008 and 2009 were disasters for the Saints. Also Brad Howard was a costly misfire in 2006 which was an excellent draft in terms of depth.

Other than that, St. Kilda's record is solid without being spectacular in relation to the competition.

It's a bit simplistic to argue that the results are an indictment on the club.

You have to consider the following...

How our churn rate is compared to the rest of the comp.

How close we came to winning a flag twice.

Think about it...

Ray, Jones, Dempster, Schneider. Dawson, Peake, King, Gardiner, Eddy. Mcqualter etc all came within a whisker of being premiership players.

So in that respect, we have done well.

Sure you can argue that the youth policy hasn't been ideal, but then again, we were never ina rebuild... nor did we have the luxury of top draft picks due to our sustained success.

Replacing Fraser Gehrig has become a curse.

2005. Fergus Watts, 197 cm , 26 YO now. Wasnt that good, ( similar stats to what we've seen from Stanley, Archer, or Johnson ), then broke his foot.

2006 Jarryd Allen, 193 cm, 24 now, his four games were underwhelming then he had a career ending injury.

2007 Khan Haratuku - 198cm, 23 now, NSW Scholarship rookie, didnt make it.

2008 Tom Lynch - 193cm, 21 now. Failed to develop as a forward and ran away.
Steven Gaertner - 199cm, 21, Everyone thought he was a full back. Walked out.

2009 Adam Pattison - 198cm , 25, Fancied himself as a forward, but no-one else did.
Daniel Archer - 193cm , 19YO. Has he been de-listed?
Tom Walsh - 195cm , 23YO. Ran off to Sydney because the Saints wanted him to learn the game before he played.

2010 - obviusly too scared to even try to pick a tall forward.

Howard is in effect one of those players that come in in the wrong era of footy, he had a few decent years down back in the VFL years after we delisted him that if he was bottom age these days there'd be clubs taking a took at that time as well. It's not exactly a misfire as it is simply unfortunate (similar to Miles) in that these were blokes who in todays game of burst rotations could run, could kick but for other reasons never found their way to be retained.

As opposed to someone like Shattners nemesis who never really donned the jumper.

Also remember 2006 was the year where 11 players from Queensland were taken.

Everyone wanted to take a Queenslander. Armitage and Howard were two of them.

Which sort of lines up with my other regret regarding the curse of Gehrig.
Some of the other teams seem to pick them up no worries.

Jack RIEWOLDT was taken after Armitage. Is there something about that name... nah plenty of Jacks around. Then there was Kurt Tippett taken a few after Howard.
We could have even got Jesse White with the pick we used to redraft Ferguson.

Freo picked up recycled Kepler Bradley well after the pick we used to redraft Gehrig.

Why isn't Mitch Brown, ( taken with Geelong's first pick a couple after Tom Lynch ) , disgruntled by the lack of opportunity? A question for any Tom's that may have got disgruntled and asked to be traded.

How annoying is it for the Cats to just grab Podsiadly out of the VFL.

Jack Darling last year.

So you need to be in REBUILD so that you dont completely neglect the drafting and development.
Either Lyon was in way over his depth with regards to these things, or he didnt give a rats tossbag, and always planned to get in , get the business done and get out before the team bottomed out.

I liked Watters comment that rebuilding is an ongoing process.

Whilst most of us are smarter with hindsight, it seems clear it's the latter.

Pretty clever by Lyon, but leaves our list looking like swiss cheese.

I always did wonder why we pursued the 27yo Lovett so vigorously and why Lyon couldn't bear to improve a competitor with Ball (rather than take a Jack Gunston or Mitch Duncan or Sam Reid or Max Gawn or Nathan Vardy).

His absence from Zeb games (until this year when he decided he needed to play some kids), the "retirement" debacle, Walsh not getting an opportunity, Lynch as a forward, Armitage as a forward, and some bizarre late season selection decisions just rounded out the rodgering nicely.

You'll get no argument from me on the latter. I think it was pretty obvious and I supported it 100% given where our list was at.

And I'm not about to change my views because he's gone.

Lyon was recruited to take us to the next level and win a flag. He built a team to do that and almost pulled it off twice. Had he won at least one flag, he would go down in history as a genius.

He didn't rodger us or anything like that. He was hired to win flags and did everything in his powers to do so... including Lovett.

Perhaps he did see the writing on the wall and moved on. Perhaps the club did also and hesitated in giving him 4 more years?

If his brief was to rebuild, then fair enough. But it wasn't. It wasn't your typical appointment coming after years of relative success.

I don't have a problem with that aproach. Voss on the other hand...

was he really not there until this year.

i am sure i remember there were people impressed with the fact that after GT left Lyon made sure he saw Zeb games? and we were all impressed?

was this not true?

In which case its probably a pity the club left it a bit too late to hire Pelchen. Maybe the management mistakenly assumed that player development was one of the duties of the Coach.
Lyon seemed to think it was like picking apples at the supermarket, and if you found a Gala among the Granny Smith's , well it can goddam be a Granny Smith or get out.

I remember seeing him at the game at Easter in 2009 (v Scorps at TBBO).

Can someone insert that applause thingy? (sarcasm alert :p)

Absence is in the context of him being there each and every week (unless there is a clash). I shouldn't have implied he was never there (just rarely).

He was certainly at games alot more in 2011 (which is a good thing, albeit off a low base!)

Pretty sure Lyon didn't have his contract written up as "flag at all costs"!

Yeah, would have thought that the board assumed we'd be looking after the longer term too. Pelchen's appointment and now Burke's comments indicate they started to realise some issues were developing.

Following the fiascoes that were Blight and Thomas, Lyon was under the pump like no ther.

There was massive fall out and division when GT got the flick... followed by calls to bring him back after 2007.

This guy was supposed to take us to the next level, they all cried. But when we got there in 09 and 10, no one was ranting.

Some were saying play the kids... but had he played the kids, who's to say we would have wona flag let alone made succesive GF's?

Lyon was not hired to rebuild the club / list. He was hired to make the most of what we had and go the next level.

Hindsight is an easy way to say if he was right or wrong. Regardless, he made the decisions he thought were needed at the time... rightly or wrongly.

I'd just like to know what his draft strategy was in 2008. Ignore ready made players and go for long term developments. Followed by a complete reversal in 2009, because we can obviously walk on water.

Or was it a shock when the team made a grab for the flag in 2009?
( I kind of think the Leigh Tudor forward pressure thing may have taken him by surprise ).

Some of us were expressing concern during 2010 (and post 2009 with Lovett and even further back with Brad Howard, Matthew Clarke and Fraser Gehrig).
