Why is it that every round seems to be 'season defining'. I hate to break it to you but whilst some matches may have more passion, sentiment or emotional driving the result, each game is just 4 points. I'd hardly call Richmond vs Fremantle as season defining. Tigers will pull their pants down, they often beat them when they were rubbish so why wouldn't they now they're in awesome form?
Yes every game is worth 4 points however some games are worth 8 points, and I'm not talking in the methaphorical sense, I'm talking mathematically.
Gaining 4 points also denies the other team 4 points so if the two teams are close to each other the difference is huge. For instance back in 2006 we finished ninth but we were 8 points behind Bulldogs who were 8th. (For arguements sake lets say we had better % which we didn't of course but hypthetically)
We had 11 wins they had 13. If we had beaten them we would have made it (with the above % assumption)
However, if we had beaten say a Essendon who were pretty low, or even a team high like say a west coast, we still wouldn't have made it cos the dogs would have still had 13.
So beating Freo is probably more valuable than beating Melbourne, or even a high team like WC, because Freo are close to us on the ladder. Which is why the win against Saints was in a way worth 8 points.
