Seems as though the recruiters are really backing themselves this draft, will either make or break their careers as if they get this draft wrong it will further set our club back another 3+ years. Hears hoping their strange choices were based on an enormous amount of scouting instead of choosing the players out of a hat as it appears.
quick question outside of Conca where were the other new recruits predicted to be selected ? at first glance only batchelor was expected to be drafted in the first 50 -60 picks

just cos we haven't heard of some of these draftees doesn't mean they were selected out of a hat. Mock drafts don't mean anything. Plenty of players on mocks didn't end up getting drafted.

you have to understand recruiters spend all year watching hours upon hours of these kids playing all over the country, not to mention huge amounts of time analysing the stats on programmes that cost thousands of $.

Compare this to journos that piece together info from here and there and watch the odd game and then put together a mock draft that the general footy public gobble up. I'll back FJ and our recruiters over these other "experts" any day.

...if they get this draft wrong it will further set our club back another 3+ years.

How?

It's not like we have a wave of veterans on the verge of retirement.

All we need is to keep adding an average of at least three top-30 players a year. It doesn't matter if four come from one year, five from the next and none from the following year, what matters is the three year average.

At our stage of development, if we draft badly in one year it sets us back one year at most.

As for your other comments, we said when Hardwick was appointed that we were going to target players with size, skill and run, that's what we've done right?

They may not be the particular player people were after, but they do have the attributes we said we were going to prioritise in our drafting.

looks to be a bold and adventurous draft to me, with a theme of plucking kids from obscurity apart from RC who had a decorated junior career, the others only recently stepped out of country footy into the big time, and i mean just, Morewell, riverlands, margaret river...Our recruiters have really put the avaiable talent under the microscope and looked at where the upside is:thumbsu:

We hardly plucked these guys from obscurity! Batchelor/McDonald = TAC Cup, Conca/Derickx = WAFL, Helbig = SANFL they're the main competition in the respective states! We just went for guys that were less known then the main names that played in the National Championships!

Time will tell with these guys but all have potential and could prove to be draft master strokes, if you think about it, these guys besides Conca weren't talked up in the media and on the Internet about being certain Draft picks so now that we have given them the opportunity they might respond and make the most of it!

i am not questioning the quality of the kids, only wether we perhaps pulled the trigger a little early :)
It's not like the NFL draft, where a high first round pick gets millions of dollars and the real 'value' is in the second round... because you can't trade picks on the day, you can't maximise value in the same way. The recruiters have a list of who they think will be available, then try to match the best value. The pick of Derickx is classic - they rated the rucks, the chance to get Lycett vanished, figured he'd last to 63, so for picks 30, 47 and 51 go for the strong bodied, high kicking skilled mids they want. If Lycett had fallen to 30, they probably take him, and Derickx doesn't get drafted... then who knows, Batchelor may get taken before 47 and they go with a 2nd, 3rd or 4th best option instead of the one they really wanted. Is Lycett better than Derickx? Who knows?? An U18 ruck compared to a similar sized ruck who has played against and beaten men for 2 years - I almost think the odds are higher that Derickx ends with the better career.

After the first 5-6 picks, it's a lottery every year. If the science was good, Dean Cox, Nick Maxwell, Nathan Foley etc would all have been 1st round picks. 50% will be good players, 50% will never fulfil their 'potential'.

Sounds good, but all played in major competitions. The U18 Champs gets well overvalued here, I suspect because many posters actually play with many of the kids in line for selection and talk them up. I personally think the safer picks are those who not only play well at U18 level but have success at senior (WAFL, SANFL, VFL) level against men - which is why I think Polec will be a player, so would have loved to see him last to us, but was not unhappy to pass on Heppell in preference for Conca. I am a hopeless judge of rucks, but I'd rather see one selected who had performed well against fully grown men than just against 18 year old beanpoles. I actually see a consistent trend to selecting bigger bodied footballers with good foot skills, rather than athletic whippets, regardless of where they came from/played. That's just as big a reason to be encouraged, since the whippet recruitment of previous regimes (Fiora, JON Meyer etc etc) left us at the heel end of the ladder staring up at all the a... holes above us.

Absolutely spot on.... I can't believe the crap that gets sprouted on this site. As if a bunch of nobodies would have a better idea than people who are paid full time to do the job of recruiting... Just because some player didn't get a mention in a phantom draft or a stupid newspaper.... How about we judge in 3 - 5 years time? Oh yes, right, a sensible approach.... my mistake

No... really?? I have no trouble believing it.

But it's all opinion, and amongst the turds you do occasionally find a stone worth the polish. Half the challenge is wading through the virtual cesspool, at least you don't need a shower afterwards!

And 3-5 years before passing judgement is also spot on, but in this age of immediate gratification, who can wait???

I have a young guy who is good mates with Dean McDonald, spoke to him today, claims Dean had 6 clubs talking to him. I wouldn't get too hung up on the numbers thing. Our recruiters have selected on an as needs basis. Just because some "experts" in the media or whatever were taken by surprise doesn't add up to much. I reckon we will go a couple of KP's as rookies. Very happy with the style of players we recruited.

The so called experts in the media get their info from speaking to recruiters, junior coaches etc. All recruiters nowadays want to keep their hard earned information on these kids as secret as possible so they more than likely feed the journos a heap of crap information hoping that no other club cottons on to who they really want and at what pick. The coaches will talk up any kid that is mentioned in the hope of helping them get drafted.

Also was just on the Phantom Drafts board and I must say that it seems some of the people who put together there Phantom Draft have no idea, it's almost laughable at how wrong some people got there phantom drafts and then the same people who had done it criticise a club for not taking player X with pick Y.

This is Knightmares Mock Draft.

...me...i've been doing it since 1980 and i can tell you right now i have been very patient about it as well......

This draft could easily be one of our best ever. But at the same time they might not and probably wont all click on. Richmond are finally getting everything in place. Its going to be bloody good when we are top 4.
