Richo going around one more time

Obviously Richo isn't the future, the man himself has been a great player for Richmond over a long period of time. He has nothing else to prove. Unless personal milestones are the objective.

Hardwick already has made hard calls on younger players, this one is a little puzzling tbh. But anyway, good luck to Richmond and Richo.:thumbsu:

Richo may not be the future but there are only so many players a club can cut in a year and we've lost 4 of our 6 30+ year olds for next year. You cannot get rid of all your experience and expect young kids to get smashed each week. Richo will no doubt play a reduced role next year and pinch hit off the bench. He cannot play full games any more. Then again, he's a freak of an athlete and only know one way to apply himself.

Geez I wish some supporters would think logically for a change on these boards instead of digging the boots in all the time.

WTF are you talking about ?? He has made the hard calls on our entire list not just the young players. Not even Hawthorn decided to completely move on their older players, Hardwick isnt stupid he still realises you need a couple of mature age players to help the kids develop.

Richo has alot to offer the team, not only can he play but can act as an onfield coach during gameday. You have to realise that Hardwick is a new coach, will have relatively inexperienced coaches around him, I think its smart to also have Richo run around for another season.

Great call Zeke, you really nailed this one!

Oh wait you forgot how young players need leaders and experience to look up to as well as the numerous cuts to the list we have already made.

There is no magic age where suddenly your body breaks down and you can no longer meaningfully contribute to the side.

Didn't Craig Bradley win the B/F in his last year, and really wanted to keep playing, but was forced to retire due to age? He could've gone on longer. Same with Robert Harvey. They'd have given more than a lot of (although younger) lesser players.

IMO too many players who are no good, or who have bodies that are not right, continue far too long because of their perceived 'youth'. In the same way, many older players who still do all the right things and can match it with the youngsters retire because they are seen to be 'too old' and 'vulnerable'. Player A might be finished at 28, Player B might be finished mid to late 30s.

Richo falls into the Player B category IMO, and why shouldn't he play on?

Trust me when I say this. In 27 years of complete and utter misery, one man has singlehandedly kept the turnstiles clicking for the RFC. I've even been guilty of it myself. Gone along to a game knowing we'd get shellacked, but knowing the great man would at least entertain us in one way or another, whether it be good or bad.
He is truly a once in a generation player. And in today's sanitised world where one must keep to the path, Richo provides an outlet for long suffering Tiger supporters like me and even non-RFC fans.
It;s not like it's a charity case anyway. The guy is still one of the better players in the comp.
Next year looks like being another same old for us. But at least the Cho will be entertaining us for another season.
I am glad he is going around again. And I will openly weep when he calls it a day.

Zeke couldn't be more right on this occasion. Richmond will always be mediocre because they are scared of making hard decisions. Richo is taking a spot on the list which might have been filled by a rookie with potential to play 6 - 10 years. He is NOT the future and should have bowed out with his reputation intact. Other clubs get criticised for 'pushing' stars out, but sometimes that is what is needed.

the key is richo's versatility. he can show young forwards how to lead and command the ball, how to wait back, read the play and get to the contest at the right time to and how to crumb from an outside position. he can show young midfielders how to push past aerobic capacity, attack the ball and be accountable for your opponent. he's not the future and perhaps this does betray the weakness of richmond in bowing to sentiment and the fear of feral fans but he will give a hell of a lot to the club and perhaps win a game or two.

good luck to him, we're going to miss him when he goes.

Richmond desperately need to move forward, and i am not sure if keeping Richo for one more year is the best for that.

Tiges should have asked him to do the best thing for the team and retire.

Hope this doesn't blow up in their faces.

How could it blow up in their face? We will be bottom 4 in 2010 and he will be on the veterans list. Our forward line won't lose any development because he will most likely be used as a wingman or follower. He is also still a top 3 player at the club, you can't cut all the quality just because of age.

No idea mate.

Please tell me all the HARD decisions Hawthorn have made over the past 10 years.
