Richo retires

along with carey the best contested mark i have seen. the game is poorer without players and characters like richo. legend

Right up there with the best players to watch when he was on. But, I'm wondering how future generations will remember him. Will he be looked at along the same lines as Robbie Flower, Trevor Barker and Bob Skilton? I'd say there's a chance we'll be telling our grandkids what a special player he was and they'll look at his career and say "one b&f and two finals series...he can't have been that good."

Richo's numbers are great...but the numbers don't even tell half the story.

he will be remembered fairly well i think as he would be one of the most liked players to play the game. while i think they have been 4 or 5 better forwards of his era the fact that he stood head and shoulders above his teamates will work well in his favor for being remembered in say 30-40 years time.

It wasn't meant to end like this!

Richo's legendary recuperative powers and amazing athleticism made him seem indestructible. Right now I'm wondering how I'll muster any enthusiasm for the 2010 season.

But down the track, I'll look back and feel privileged to have seen this man epitomise clubmanship for the past seventeen years. Not your cardboard cut-out hero who did everything by the book, but a real flesh and blood superstar who took supporters with him on the roller coaster ride and won over the majority of his detractors through sheer purity of spirit.

Jack Dyer will always be the greatest Tiger, but Richo is special.

Not only was Richo the full entertainment package on the field, having met him I can safely say he is undoubtedly one of life's genuinely good blokes.

Best of luck with the next chapter big fella. :thumbsu::eek::thumbsu:

This

was talking to a club captain a few years back and Richo came up. I asked him what he thought at the dummy spits at his own players. He said, in all seriousness that if he'd played with some of those sides with the ball going sideways and backwards while he was leading multiple times, a spray would have been the least the problems. smashing them senseless would have have been a more likely outcome.

Ahhhh this is the moment I was speaking about before, his big grab against Port in 2005, also some great commentary by the late Clynton Grybas.

Why are the commentators so excited and why is the crowd so loud? It was only the 2nd quater? did you guys come back from 0-44 to get in front or what? I can't remember the game.

Gutted also. A player I admired, a bloke I respected.

My favourite Richo memory would be going down the local milkbar in Richmond early one Saturday morning, after the Tiges had been flogged by the Pies the night before, Richo had been fairly errant in front of goal.

Anyway, walk in, there's some bloke in a Richmond gameday jacket talking to the shopkeeper, going off his rocker about how bad the Tiges were the night before. I start reading the paper, waiting for this bloke to finish, occasionally looking up, picking up bits of the convo. Look up from the sport section, and notice that the bloke behind the counter's eyes are now as wide as saucers, and doing everything in his power to try and subtlely hint to this bloke to stop his ranting about how shit Richo is, and how anyone could have kicked the goals he missed last night and that he should give the game away.

Look behind me, and it's the great man himself, armed with a litre of milk, listening intently in on what this bloke has to say. Eventually the Tigers supporter turns around and comes face to face with Richo grinning at him, and absolutely shits himself. Richo just plonks some shrapnel on the counter, starts to walk out, whilst this guy is as apologetic as he can possibly be, Richo only replies "....not as easy as it looks on TV, mate."

Always looked at him in a different light after that. And I reckon that wasn't the only time he's had to deal with something like that.

Wasn't 0-44, but you guys were at least 5-6 goals up at some stage in that first half. Also the fact that it was Richo's 200th, the big grab, and the goal to put us in front just before the break was probably the reason behind the excitement.

I'd hardly say that.

Richo's latter years have been pretty good.

Only played 6 games this year of which 2 he was injured.

Still polled the most Brownlow votes of any Richmond player this year.

Twice polled 3 votes in losing teams this year - one of those in a losing team against the eventual Premiers in one of his last games.

He may have had some good games, but topping the Richmond best and fairest was hardly difficult last year. As you say though, he only played 6 games last year. That is kind of the point, he was getting on, has been getting injured more often it seems. I didn't say he was past it, he is just getting on. I mean, you are here saying he played only 4 games uninjured all year. A further 2 injured. That is a great contribution for the cash you would be spending on him. Did he even kick 10 goals last year? IIRC (correct me if I am wrong) his injuries were soft tissue too, which often happens as older players head down that slippery slope to oblivion.

All I am saying is it is nice to see a player go out on his own terms and before he has made an embarrassment of himself, as quite a few have done recently.

Wish you well in your new life in the media...or whatever you choose to do

Guttered!... would of love to have seen a farewell game at the "G", perhaps you might get a farewell lap before the game against Carlton in rd1?.

On the bright of all this, is that we (Richmond supporters) were lucky that Richo played at Richmond and not any other club
smile.gif
....so we had the enjoyment of seeing the "BEST CONTESTED MARK" ever to play the game!! in a wonderful 282 game 800 goal career.

Oh yeah i almost forgot... RICHO is.... and always will be RICHMOND!.

As weird as it may sound coming from a passionate Carlton* supporter, I'm sitting here at my PC absolutely shattered by the news.

Best of luck with the next chapter big fella. :thumbsu::eek::thumbsu:

This....

I have an odd feeling of loss for one of the greats of the game. He really grew on me with every season I watched him play as I grew up.

Great career Richo :thumbsu:

R.I.P. Richomond Football Club..
Richo was the only thing the club has had for over a decade, if it wasn't for this man I wouldn't even barrack for Richmond, a massive part of the club died today, I am shattered

was the reason i barracked for the club, and represents more as one man than the entire team has over the past 20+ years.
absolutely devastating news.
i go into 2010 with no hope, dreading watching the side play...with no richo as a saving grace.
the game has lost a champion.

The Richo love affair has really grown over the last few years. It hasnt always been like this.

I did always laugh at those who questioned his football ability. There were plenty.

Anyway another character leaves the game. Will be forgotten quickly but hard to replace.

I dont label him a superstar or champion like many

For some reason, there doesn't seem to be a general appreciation of what a freak Richo was when he first burst into the scene (and before he did his knee) .
197cm tall with true sprinting ability and a huge leap. At times he was near enough unstoppable.

.

Very sad that Richo will no longer be playing.

Always enjoyed watching him play, for the highs and the lows.

In 1996 (age 9 and 10) even though I followed the Crows, Richo was one of my favourite players (on par with Modra) and given the lack of success with Crows thanks to Robert Shaw I almost switched allegiances to Richmond. I'm glad I didn't but Richo has always remained a favourite.

Disappointing that he didn't have more success in football, but he seems to have set himself up for a reasonable career in the media so at least we won't have heard the last from him.

Richo has always been a champion and to a large extent has transcended the generations to the point where i really can't imagine the club without him. I hope he continues to contribute to the club - he can't be replaced as a figurehead of the club.
We will miss you Richo.

if he was ranting on about anyone else and they were behind him i think they may have acted differently
