There's something here about instinct as well. The see ball, get ball mindset is not just a learned response, it's natural, like a reflex. That's really hard to change that habit.
You can break instincts but it usually take psychedelic drugs and alot of work.

Rising from the sick bed for the Sydney post: Round 10, 2023 v Sydney: 76th Interchange

Trying to get to everything that happened on Saturday, including, in no particular order: Wardlaw, Scott, Greenwood, stoppage dominance, apparently unlocking something against Sydney but not knowing what, blocking exits (consistent storytellng there), and other bits and bobs.

Thanks Rick.

Hope your health improves as quickly as we did, after that first ten mins.

Just avoid interchanging anything & you'll be right.

In these years of despair you always cheer me up on a Monday Rick

An entire section devoted to the brilliance of Bailey Scott, the Nostril will pleased. Not. :)

Cheers Rick

Get well soon.

Personally I don't think Sydney's midfield is the same since Kennedy was at his peak. That might have something to do with us beating them. our mids have always been good. Its just the next three plays that have cost us.

Post up for the Collingwood game: Round 11, 2023 v Collingwood: Phases of play

So I thought there was a lot of good to come out of the game. But the difference between the two sides was that North could string most of a good play together in open play, where Collingwood can string all of a good play together.

It's all about explaining and highlighting that, with a bunch of clips to illustrate.

Sensible as always, and encouraging.

Good writeup.

One thing with Larkey's kick inside 50... well two actually.

Was he in a position to use someone (Sheeze) running past or was that kick the only option?

Also full credit to Maynard there. He read that really well and went flat out to shut down Larkey from before Scott targeted him.

Sheezel might have been the better option there but that's easy to say with hindsight cos Larkey was well clear too. Collingwood set up well all day and their pressure when it mattered was excellent.

Yeah Maynard was A+, no doubt. For me it was more about the bigger picture of knowing who you want to give it to to kick inside 50. Down the track everyone will be well drilled enough for Larkey to know, 'I've got Sheezel with hands over the top, get it to him, he's the guy to kick it'.

It's not quite an apples to apples comparison, but Collingwood try to avoid Mihocek and Cox kicking it inside 50 in similar situations because they almost always get it to support runners. That's where we'll get to soon enough.

Clearly, Larkey should have given that one off to Sheezel but it's also the case that we have overused the ball by hand at times and Collingwood was managing to intercept those handballs and break up our running play. If this had been pointed out to players at the break by the coaches, then it's in Larkey's mind to kick rather than handball in that situation. And alternately, if his attempt to handball to Sheezel got smothered, we'd all be ruing his choice not to just kick the bloody thing inside 50. I guess the answer is, whatever you choose to do, just make sure you hit your target, by hand or by foot.

Sheeze was probably a better option than Larkey at that point from Scott's POV. A better handball would have helped too but there's only a few players that good, (a couple on our list.) Very few players have the sort of run Scott and Sheeze have in our side, the Pies have a bunch of those guys, so that kind of helps with their situation and we can build into that.

At the same time the way we got the ball there is a massive improvement on the last 18 months, as you say. The forward line is the last piece of this puzzle gameplan wise. The rest of it looks good when it works, which is something that's happening more and more. You can definitely feel it turning and having players out of the side who will make a difference when they come back, it could all come together alot quicker than we expect.

Okely doke, so two points for today's post in here.

First up, the actual post for the Essendon game: Round 12, 2023 v Essendon: Closer again - The Shinboner

There's heaps in there, in order: midfield bad, then midfield good, Liam Shiels, Tarryn Thomas, the forward group, Phoenix Spicer, Ben McKay.

Secondly, I'm planning on doing a Shinboner mailbag to post on Wednesday. So if there are any questions you'd like to send through, feel free. Disclaimer though: I'm not touching the Hawthorn/Clarko investigation with a 100-foot pole.

For the mailbag, I was wondering what your thoughts are with the list profile and our current draft hand being where they are, whether we should be looking to trade for pick 1 and Harley Reid, or bank the small forward in Nick Watson with our first pick and use our later first rounder on another list need.

Sorry for butting in, but my 2 cents.

As much as Harley Reid is going to be a great young talent, I don’t think with all our list gaps we are in a position to sell the farm for him and I think other clubs will be throwing a kings ransom at whoever holds Pick#1 to get him.

If you go after Reid you would probably need to look at tipping out someone like Powell as we will be too midfield heavy.

I would rather us chase some elite talent through trade or draft in the back half, because at the moment that seems to be a glaring weakness for us. A good rebound defender and interceptor would be welcomed. Free Agency might also help with some of these roles as well.
