We pick an elite-kicking left-footed half-back flanker who can play tall and small... looks like the rumors of Pittard returning home to Victoria in 2017 are #yepconfirmed :(

... our biggest issue of 2015 - the clearances
Move from 12th in clearance differential to top 6 next year and we will make the top 4.
And how many games did our clearance machine Ollie Wines miss in 2015? ... Oh thats right. The we had Ah-Chee & S Gray set up.

Frankly Mathieson would have had zero effect in 2016, and would IMO not even have got close to being selected for an AFL game. In the end he would have been a mid-draft punt, and by all reports, a questionable one at that!

Club has said all along they will go for best available ... that they did.

Inb4 REH nicknames him "Tony" Bonner.

Haha, I was thinking Neville the last week or so, as the big colour photo of him in Inside Football, he has a nice deep tan!

Edit - Maybe I will call him Senator Bonner if he proves to be a good player.

Doesn't seem to be any risk in picking up Bonner at all looking at his highlight package. Possibly the outside player we needed this year when Pole Cat went down.

He may have slipped if recruiters thought he was a "one trick" pony - great kick and height, but not super quick, not a massive intercept mark taker, not a contested ball gatherer?
Anyway - welcome Riley.
guess we have a plethora of HBF's to choose from now. Can't have enough HBF's :D

Videos look like he's been given the greenlight to take any kick he wants since he's so good at it.

Disagree with the notion that he doesn't fill a need. We've lived and died by our ball use in the Ken era. I do expect the Magpies to struggle though.

welcome to the club Riley, nothing better to watch than a raking left foot kick.

given his physical attributes, playing cv and predictable hype once drafted, I would be interested to know what concerns the recruiters had for him to slide to #37?

Nickname must be "Junior" assuming the rest of the team are au fait with mid-level Peckinpah.

Nah, I'm with finbarr. As soon as I saw we'd drafted a Bonner he was "Tony" to me.

There can't have been too many players who have gone from under 18's footy to a senior premiership in the same season, so as others have already said Bonner looks a good chance to make it at AFL level, that raking left foot could be a real weapon coming off half back.

There's a bit of a feature on him in Inside Football.

  • On potentially moving away from home: "I'd like to think I'm loyal so if a club takes me they'll be getting someone who wants to be a long term option and understands it won't be all smooth sailing but you've got to ride it all out"
  • According to the author, Ben Casanelia bears an uncanny resemblance to Chad Wingard (in appearance). Sorry Ben, don't quite see that!
  • As a Christmas present in 2014, his father Derek (ex Sturt and South Adelaide) bought a Port membership just to watch Jasper Pittard. "I'm not watching Chad Wingard taking hangers, I'm watching what Pittard is doing off the ball and how he sets up and where he's running when the ball is not in the area"
  • "I'd like to be a Grant Birchall player - attack from the half back but do some aerial work as well". Birchall is the often made comparison, but it is a very good one IMO as there are many similarities between them.
  • Played a few years of soccer growing up as a teenager (supposedly part of an EPL club feeder program) before seeing the light. Supported Essendon as a kid.

Happy to select him as he has plenty of the qualities required to succeed in the AFL. For that reason can accept making another investment in an area/player type we have a strength in.

I think he was injured towards the end of the season so didnt play in West's premiership side.

I think Haysman did, he may be a good chance for rookie selection.

his left foot seems beautiful. hitting pressured targets lace out and well weighted kicks etc.

Is he the type to struggle at SANFL level tho? Not as much outside run and wont get the ball given to him like he canin the AFL to run and use the kick on the outside?
